DVD Pirates of the Caribbean - Dead Man's Chest (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)

Take the first Pirates of the Caribbean film, add a dash of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and a lot more rum. Shake well and you'll have something resembling Dead Man's Chest, a bombastic sequel that's enjoyable as long as you don't think too hard about it. The film opens with the interrupted wedding of Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), both of whom are arrested for aiding in the escape of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) in the first film. Their freedom can only be obtained by getting Captain Jack's compass, which is linked to a key that's linked to a chest belonging to Davy Jones, an undead pirate with a tentacle face and in possession of a lot of people's souls. If you're already confused, don't worry--plot is definitely not the... Learn More

Track Down

I saw this after watching "Freedom Downtime," and I have to say that if they'd seen the final script they needn't have bothered to protest. The film is quite sympathetic to Kevin Mitnick--he comes out as more of a sympathetic character than Tsutomu Shimomura does (and "wins" in the end despite jail). There's no trial scene, there's no garbage can lid scene (contrary to one of the reviewers, who seems to be reviewing the initial script rather than the final product)--Mitnick is not portrayed as violent in this film. Sure, they took some liberties with the facts to try to make it more entertaining, but that was probably necessary.

Watch for the real Tsutomu Shimomura in the scene where the actor portraying him is speaking at a conference--he's sitting next to Donal Logue... More Info About This DVD

Phantoms

Either Dean Koontz shouldn't adapt his own bestsellers, or his 1983 novel Phantoms was a pack of horror clichés to begin with, or this movie is 15 years past its due date. What might have seemed fresh at the time of Poltergeist now feels like it was made from a derivative script with pages missing. Plagued by reckless leaps of logic, the movie starts with adequately eerie atmosphere and a perversely twisted performance by Scream 2's Liev Schreiber, but decays into a familiar hash of gross-out effects, resulting from the annihilation of a small Colorado town by an evil force known as "The Ancient Enemy." In a dreary role that insults the twilight of his distinguished career, Peter O'Toole plays a paleobiologist whose crackpot ideas have become tabloid fodder,... More Info About This DVD

The Skulls 2

I was browsing through my rental place when I saw this dvd and decided to pick this up. The first Skulls had a good premise and a great cast (the ultra hot Leslie Bibb a extra plus to it) but this review isn't about that movie its about the sequel. The Skulls 2 has the same basic premise as the first one. Guy joins Skulls, guy sees wrong-doings by Skull members, guy gets set up by the Skulls, guy uses smarts to outwit Skull members all the while getting the girl. I hope I didn't spoil the movie for anyone by revealing the good guy winning. Like it would happen any other way anyways. This straight to video movie has an above average production and a nice cast. Robin Dunne is a good actor although I see him more as a tv actor than a movie actor. The pacing of the movie was great all the way... More Info About This DVD

Dracula - The Dark Prince

Mediocre in every aspect: gross historical inaccuracies, poor acting and a script for dummmies, however with good production values. If you're still thinking of watching this movie and want to get some factual knowledge out of it here's some reminders: there was no unified Romania as we know it today, Vlad Tepes ruled over Wallachia (principality of Romania); the love and fatherhood subplot is bogus; and the cruelty and mental instability of Vlad is downplayed Hollywood-style in order to make this a hero movie. I recommend the book "Dracula Prince of Many Faces" for the true story of Vlad Tepes. More Info About This DVD

Halloween - The Curse of Michael Myers

The series premise continues to stretch so thin it could dissipate. This time, Michael Myers chases his unfortunate niece around, then goes after a family who happen to be living in his former home. This is slasher-ism at its most cynical, and a thoroughly unpleasant, unimaginative, and unredeeming movie. Donald Pleasence, the one holdover from the original film, looks like he'd rather be anywhere than in this thing. --Tom Keogh More Info About This DVD

Hellraiser - Bloodline

Hellraiser IV: Bloodline

As my subject line of my review states. Being a huge fan of I and II - I've looked upon later movies in the franchise with a leery eye. Too much of good thing spoils the flesh.

Pleasingly, this one isn't a hour and 20 some minutes wasted. The story at times is engaging and demands your attention. As in many of my reviews, I'll avoid the already reviewed ground of the plot and offer my insights.

The opening scenes of "Hellraiser in Space" at first, I almost turned the movie off. But then, something said give it a chance so off I went. I'm generally not a fan of flashback sequences. This one however was well done. The flashbacks provided pivotal backstory as to the events of 2127 and what lead to events on the space... More Info About This DVD
