Take the first Pirates of the Caribbean film, add a dash of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and a lot more rum. Shake well and you'll have something resembling Dead Man's Chest, a bombastic sequel that's enjoyable as long as you don't think too hard about it. The film opens with the interrupted wedding of Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), both of whom are arrested for aiding in the escape of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) in the first film. Their freedom can only be obtained by getting Captain Jack's compass, which is linked to a key that's linked to a chest belonging to Davy Jones, an undead pirate with a tentacle face and in possession of a lot of people's souls. If you're already confused, don't worry--plot is definitely not the... Learn More

This 1973 television movie about 110 years of American history as seen through the eyes of a black woman from Louisiana (Cicely Tyson) is a terrific achievement, a window onto racism from the Civil War to the Civil Rights Movement. Tyson gives a career performance as the title character, whose personal life is inextricably woven into the fabric of the African American struggle for equality. A mixture of the sentimental and the unflinching, this is the kind of educational experience that fully engages a viewer. --Tom KeoghMore Info About This DVD Director(s): John Korty DVD Release Date: Released the 11 January 2005 Usually ships in 24 hours

Jane Seymour is very much in her Victorian-lace Somewhere in Time mood here, although the action is set in the present day. She and her husband (Gerald McRaney as an ex-football stud, now impotent would-be sportscaster) move into a modern house overlooking a bay, but the new place is troubled by strange sounds and cold breezes. "Do you believe in ghosts?", she asks pal Millie Perkins, but Jane isn't complaining. Soon our overheated heroine is buying old frocks and taking long showers in the company of her ghostly lover, who provides her with considerably more physical attention than her husband can. Director John Korty, a TV-movie veteran, guides the low-key spookiness with a steady hand, although the final act slips into out-and-out romance-novel silliness. Mainly it's a vehicle... Although not as interesting as "Love Story," this sequel does allow us to see what Oliver's life was like in the years after Jenny's death.
The movie begins with Jenny's funeral and we watch Oliver go through the motions of living, but not really participating in anything except his work. One day, he meets a jogger played by Candice Bergen. They begin a relationship that is pretty much of a bore to all but the most devoted Ryan O'Neal fans (of which I am definitely one!). Ms. Bergen's portrayal is wooden and unappealing, and viewers are probably relieved when she announces she can no longer live with Jenny's ghost. The one good thing her character, Marcy Bonwit Nash, does is take Oliver on a tour of her company's Hong Kong factories. When Oliver sees the poor conditions there, he... Although I admit part of the fun in watching Christmas movies is that they are so corny, this realistic tale rounds out a Christmas collection nicely.
It is about a newly divorced single mom from the midwest trying to make a new start in San Francisco. The multi-ethnic city is the perfect setting for this made-for-tv movie with a very diverse set of characters in who share a love of music. These characters are people with real problems and weaknesses. They are played by a terrific cast of theatrical worthy actors such as John Houseman, James Chromwell, Micheal Learned and Valerie Curtin.
It is nice to be able watch a Christmas movie that is heartwarming and life affirming while being true to life. I had seen this movie on VHS (a copy from a library), and found it to be fairly good. I then recently purchased a copy of the DVD version. The cover of the version I purchased says, "A heart warming classic for the holiday season!", and has the pictures of John Houseman, James Cromwell, and Michael Learned highlighted in Christmas ornaments. I don't know if the other DVD versions are as horrible, but this one has black "floaters", terrible color quality, and a grainy appearance that reminds me of some old film that an amatuer did.
BEWARE! Don't waste your money on this junk! I purchased this copy to donate to my local library. I had had so much success with all my other purchases that I didn't even bother previewing it. After it was processed at the library, I checked it out,... More Info About This DVD Director(s): John Korty DVD Release Date: Released the 17 September 2002 Usually ships in 24 hours
