DVD Pirates of the Caribbean - Dead Man's Chest (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)

Take the first Pirates of the Caribbean film, add a dash of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and a lot more rum. Shake well and you'll have something resembling Dead Man's Chest, a bombastic sequel that's enjoyable as long as you don't think too hard about it. The film opens with the interrupted wedding of Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), both of whom are arrested for aiding in the escape of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) in the first film. Their freedom can only be obtained by getting Captain Jack's compass, which is linked to a key that's linked to a chest belonging to Davy Jones, an undead pirate with a tentacle face and in possession of a lot of people's souls. If you're already confused, don't worry--plot is definitely not the... Learn More

A Boyfriend for Christmas

This was such a cute story. When I saw it on TV, I had to have it. As a young girl, Holly Grant asks Santa for a boyfriend. Now, 20 years later and with a failed romance in her past, Holly is wondering why Santa never gave her that perfect guy he promised. When Holly meets the same Santa again, she asks him. Santa sends "Doug Firwood" over to be her "boyfriend for Christmas" and the movie takes off.

Charles Durning is fantastic as Santa. Holly Grant and Doug Firwood make such a cute couple. It's a great "feel good" light-hearted romance and Christmas story and worth watching over and over again. If I tell you any more, I would have to tell the story.

Yes. This IS a chick-flick, sooooo, if you are an insensitive, belching, beer-breath, and otherwise gassy... More Info About This DVD

House Where Evil Dwells

Aside for being classic in the aspect of its cheesy lines and terrible acting, this film should never be watched unless you are looking for a good cure for your insomnia. I can't imagine anyone actually thinking this was a "good movie." More Info About This DVD

Frankenstein

The ice-locked crew of a ship searching for the Northwest Passage finds, to its collective astonishment, a near-dead man quite literally in the middle of nowhere. This individual is one Victor Frankenstein (Alec Newman), and he recounts to the captain (Donald Sutherland) his horrific tale of creating a monster (Luke Goss), and subsequently losing his family to the monster's vengeance.

Of all the versions of Mary Shelley's novel, this is probably the most faithful. The monster even comes close to resembling her description, at least on a rather basic level. The script, however, is very flat and prosaic, and Kevin (The Land That Time Forgot, Motel Hell) Connor's direction no more than workmanlike. The big mistake involves the monster. His makeup is insufficiently monstrous,... More Info About This DVD

North and South - The Complete Collection

As a history major, I pruned and picked away at North and South looking for historical inaccuracies, and found little if any. This was a great series, with enough humor, drama, and juicy affairs to keep everyone interested. When it first aired, I was only interested in the Orrie - Madaline drama, as it was the stuff trashy books are based on. Of course, put any trashy drama in the middle of a bigger conflict (in this case, The Civil War) and you have a recipe for a great story that wrote itself.

The crux of the story is the relationship between Orrie and George, two who meet as young men at West Pointe to become lifelong friends and enemies as they will serve on the Northern and Southern sides of the Civil War. The mini series does a fantastic job combing the historical... More Info About This DVD

Mary, Mother of Jesus

This TV movie doesn't venture far from biblical accounts to dramatize the life of the Virgin Mary. It gets off to a promising start by showing Mary to be a resourceful and brave teenager, as she stands up to Roman soldiers who come thundering on horseback into her village. The production then proceeds chronologically, and the major events of Mary's life, and the life of Jesus, are played out in dramatic fashion. Mary is portrayed as having to face a series of struggles and tests of faith, from the time when she is terrified to meet the messenger of God who foretells the birth of the Messiah to her witnessing the brutal scene of her son's crucifixion. As the movie deals with material that will, of course, be familiar to most viewers, an unavoidable problem is that there are few... More Info About This DVD
