DVD Pirates of the Caribbean - Dead Man's Chest (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)

Take the first Pirates of the Caribbean film, add a dash of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and a lot more rum. Shake well and you'll have something resembling Dead Man's Chest, a bombastic sequel that's enjoyable as long as you don't think too hard about it. The film opens with the interrupted wedding of Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), both of whom are arrested for aiding in the escape of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) in the first film. Their freedom can only be obtained by getting Captain Jack's compass, which is linked to a key that's linked to a chest belonging to Davy Jones, an undead pirate with a tentacle face and in possession of a lot of people's souls. If you're already confused, don't worry--plot is definitely not the... Learn More

Peter Bogdanovich

The Sopranos - Season 6, Part 1

I have spent thousands of dollars for the priviledge of watching "The Sopranos" on HBO and on DVD. It is without question my favorite television show. I have bought every Sopranos boxed set, and went online to buy the sixth season on DVD for my holiday viewing pleasure. I'm not going to get into a critique of this season as compared to the previous five... but I am pissed off that they are forcing me to take another "bite of the apple" by splitting this season into two parts a la every other series that's been milked to death by soulless networks. I thought the Sopranos franchise was above all that BS. Not to mention, I loved that all the boxes were the same exact format -- until now. Well, guess what? Not only am I not buying the season six DVD sets... now that Deadwood's been cancelled,... More Info About This DVD

Mask (Director's Cut)

Peter Bogdanovich directed this sensitive and moving story about a teenage boy, Rocky (Eric Stoltz), who lives with severe facial deformities and poor prognosis for survival beyond childhood. The film concentrates on that threshold-of-adulthood period familiar to past and present 16-year-olds, folding together common experiences of youth (love, hassles with mom, a desire to travel) with the special burdens endured by the hero. Stoltz, absolutely unrecognizable under lots and lots of prosthetic makeup, is quite good, as are Cher (as Rocky's mother) and Sam Elliott (Rocky's father figure). More than a tearjerker, the film is a genuine celebration of all that is most precious in life, even more to those who have nothing to take for granted. --Tom Keogh More Info About This DVD

A Saintly Switch

This delectable family flick (produced by Disney TV), which dishes up ample guffaws all around, is based on the premise that empathy comes only when we've walked a mile in another man's--or woman's--shoes. For Sara Anderson (Vivica Fox of TV's "City of Angels"), those shoes are football cleats belonging to her husband, quarterback Dan Anderson (played by David Alan Grier of TV's "In Living Color"). At the film's opening, Dan and Sara are experiencing marital fallout. According to their preteen children, Clark and Annette, Mom thinks Dad is a dork who would rather travel around the country just to push some ball across the field than spend time with his family. And Dad thinks Mom's job--staying at home and teaching art history on the side--would be a cinch. When a new position with the... More Info About This DVD

Noises Off...

Curtain's up, light goes down, everyone goes quiet, and... The director leaves the building. This is pretty much the happinings at any drama production. Rehearsals, dress rehearsals, tech rehearsals everytime it goes terribly down hill. Actors get on each other's nerves, and the little vains in the forehead of the director begin to show. This is such a comical screenplay greet on film or on the stage I captures everything. And any performer knows that a terrible upcoming of a play 99.9% of the time results with a perfect opening big opening production. This shows the down fall of every show and it gets worst each time.
A must see for everyone. A plus is that Christopher Revees and John Ritter are in this one too.

Saint Jack

This is a really great film if you want to watch something that's tremendously atmospheric and realistic. It was shot in Singapore in the late 1970s, and was intended to portray the country in the early 1970s, when the US war was still raging in Vietnam and US soldiers roamed throughout East Asia looking for some "R & R" (which usually meant prostitutes and booze).

Peter Bogdanovich shot the film almost entirely in the back-lots and alleys of Singapore, and the realism is astounding, since he used 99% genuine locations, and 95% local non-actors playing supporting roles. This was the "old" Singapore, teeming with life and seething masses of people who moved through the markets and shops and alleyways, making transactions and interacting. The realism is so palpable that I could almost... More Info About This DVD

Cat's Meow - Signature Series

A Hollywood scandal springs to life in Peter Bogdanovich's lively Cat's Meow. In 1924 the immensely powerful publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst held a yacht party that ended with a gunshot. Between Hearst's influence and that of his glitterati guests (including Louella Parsons and Charlie Chaplin), no satisfying account of what happened ever made it to the public. The Cat's Meow reconstructs one of the more whispered-about possible scenarios and has quite a bit of fun doing so. Cast and crew alike skewer 1920s Hollywood decadence and, by extension, today's. Eddie Izzard is a boldly odd casting choice as Chaplin, but he succeeds, refusing to fall back on Little Tramp mannerisms. There are several other good performances, but best of all is the cool-as-sherbet Joanna... More Info About This DVD
