Take the first Pirates of the Caribbean film, add a dash of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and a lot more rum. Shake well and you'll have something resembling Dead Man's Chest, a bombastic sequel that's enjoyable as long as you don't think too hard about it. The film opens with the interrupted wedding of Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), both of whom are arrested for aiding in the escape of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) in the first film. Their freedom can only be obtained by getting Captain Jack's compass, which is linked to a key that's linked to a chest belonging to Davy Jones, an undead pirate with a tentacle face and in possession of a lot of people's souls. If you're already confused, don't worry--plot is definitely not the... Learn More

Although I will certainly buy this collection of Christmas episodes from The Beverly Hillbillies and Petticoat Junction, it would probably have been easier and less confusing if MPI Home Video had just included them in their other, regular collections of the shows to begin with!! At least that way they would have been releasing the shows in their proper order and people wouldn't be thinking the collections are incomplete!! All of the criticisms pointed out in previous postings are true: no, this set does not contain the complete first season; yes, they should have included the Christmas episode; yes, the sound and picture quality could be better; yes, they should have indexed the times of each episode individually instead of running them all together; yes, it would seem that a DVD set that has the apparent support of someone as important (not to mention as fabulously beautiful) as our beloved Linda Kaye Henning probably should not contain these flaws.
Nevertheless, this set is worth every penny for two reasons: 1. all the episodes are (at least as near as I can tell) COMPLETE and unedited, to include the "third" verse of the opening credits where they plug the "sponsor of the week", and, 2.... Hollywood's 1940s craze for composer biographies did not yield many masterpieces, and Till the Clouds Roll By is one of the weaker efforts in the bunch. Robert Walker tries gamely to suggest the decency of Jerome Kern but is defeated by a sluggish story line pairing him with a crotchety mentor (Van Heflin). As a collection of freestanding production numbers devoted to Kern's songs, however, the movie has appeal. It begins with almost 20 minutes of Showboat (including Lena Horne's plaintive reading of "Can't Help Lovin' That Man") and the hits just keep on coming. Judy Garland, who appears in a few scenes as stage star Marilyn Miller, contributes "Look for the Silver Lining" and a Gatsby-esque production number on "Who?" Her songs were staged by then-hubby Vincente Minnelli.... Petticoat Junction aired on TV about 2 years before I was born and I grew up watching the reruns in the 70's and I thought it was such a cute sitcom and I think it's really good that there is a DVD out with some of the episodes but why haven't complete season DVD boxsets been released yet? Green Acres which I think is a spin-off of Petticoat Junction just had it's first season released in a DVD boxset so isn't it about time they also released complete seasons of Petticoat Junction on DVD?
