DVD Pirates of the Caribbean - Dead Man's Chest (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)

Take the first Pirates of the Caribbean film, add a dash of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and a lot more rum. Shake well and you'll have something resembling Dead Man's Chest, a bombastic sequel that's enjoyable as long as you don't think too hard about it. The film opens with the interrupted wedding of Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), both of whom are arrested for aiding in the escape of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) in the first film. Their freedom can only be obtained by getting Captain Jack's compass, which is linked to a key that's linked to a chest belonging to Davy Jones, an undead pirate with a tentacle face and in possession of a lot of people's souls. If you're already confused, don't worry--plot is definitely not the... Learn More

Wagon Train:TV Classics

This is another one of many television series from the 1950s and 1960s that is awaiting an official studio release. Were it not for "public domain" releases like this three-episode, single-disc DVD from Alpha Video, we might not be able to see some of the television classics from TV's "golden age" on DVD. So, in this regard, I appreciate the fact that at least a few episodes are available. As to the episodes themselves, the three included here are all from the 1960s when John McIntire starred as Wagonmaster Chris Hale. They include "The Doctor Denker Story," "The Malachai Hobart Story," and "Alias Bill Hawks." These episodes, either alone or in various combinations, have been available on a few Western TV compilations, but this is one of the very few DVDs where you can get all three... Lady Gangster

for a grade-P or Q noir explotation flick, this one's just about perfect ... the "moll" speaking grammarically perfect English, slaps that don't quite connect, the tough guys, the fight scenes that seem stilted somehow; the can't quite figire it out love interest, major plot holes the assorted prison buds and creeps, the ultra-kind matron, car chases, and on top of it all, a VERY young Jackie Gleason playing one of the gang, with several good lines. You can't get better entertainment, inended or not, for this price.

Outpost in Morocco

It's no Gunga Din, but Outpost in Morocco (1949) is a fine example of B-movie resourcefulness, reviving a then-dying genre (the Foreign Legion adventure) with the time-honored appeal of a veteran star. In this case it's George Raft in his waning days of stardom, playing a playboy Legionnaire in North Africa who falls for the daughter of a local sultan (Marie Windsor, with arching eyebrows and sultry allure) when he's assigned to escort her to her native Moroccan enclave. Her father hates the French and is determined to win Moroccan independence, and the action-packed climax leads to a typically sobering comment on the hazards of colonialism. Routine stuff, overall, and this otherwise good-looking DVD suffers from inexcusable background hiss on its remastered soundtrack.... More Info About This DVD

The Cocoanuts

I've always thought it would be interesting to pair this film with Singing In the Rain, because all the technical glitches satirized in the later movie were very real during the production of this one. While Jolson's The Jazz Singer predates The Cocoanuts, this was the first musical to have a full-length, credit-to-credit soundtrack.

As such, it's often goofy, ludicrous, clumsily staged and badly timed. The songs are... well, what can you say about a movie that opens with a song called "The Monkey Doodle-Doo"? And all that disappears when Groucho launches into a routine, such as the famous "viaduct" ("I'm all right, how are you?") routine with his brother Chico.

An interesting piece of trivia about this movie (and others with the Marx brothers) -- having grown up in live theater, they... More Info About This DVD
