Take the first Pirates of the Caribbean film, add a dash of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and a lot more rum. Shake well and you'll have something resembling Dead Man's Chest, a bombastic sequel that's enjoyable as long as you don't think too hard about it. The film opens with the interrupted wedding of Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), both of whom are arrested for aiding in the escape of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) in the first film. Their freedom can only be obtained by getting Captain Jack's compass, which is linked to a key that's linked to a chest belonging to Davy Jones, an undead pirate with a tentacle face and in possession of a lot of people's souls. If you're already confused, don't worry--plot is definitely not the... Learn More

Edward James Olmos, his face as weathered as the glove he packs in his suitcase, hits it out of the park as Virgil Sweet, a California Angels scout--"the last of a dying breed"--who travels from coal mines to cornfields in search of a phenom. His newest discovery is pitching prospect Sammy Bodeen, an Idaho farm boy around whom the team's hateful pony-tailed billionaire new owner orchestrates a massive marketing campaign. It's up to Virgil to ensure that the kid lives up to the hype. This 1991 drama struck out in its bid for a wide theatrical release, but until its credulity-straining Big Game climax and disappointingly cynical conclusion, it qualifies as the kind of "hold on to your dreams" sleeper that always connects with baseball movie fans. --Donald LiebensonMore Info About This DVD Actor(s): Edward James Olmos - Lorraine Bracco Director(s): Robert M. Though time and HBO's Oz have eclipsed its ground-breaking impact, Short Eyes remains a milestone of American independent film, and a vital entry in the prison-film genre. Adapted by Miguel Piñero from his acclaimed play, this gritty drama was filmed in Manhattan's infamous Men's House of Detention (better known as "the Tombs"), giving a rough, authentic edge to Piñero's unflinching portrait of men trapped in legal-system limbo. Inmate tensions intensify when an alleged pedophile ("Short Eyes" in prison slang, played by Bruce Davison) is dropped into detention, and instantly ostracized by white, Latino, and black inmates alike. Under the documentary-like direction of Robert M. Young, this claustrophobic, emotionally raw study of hopelessness was a real eye-opener... The ever-underrated director Robert M. Young (Dominick and Eugene) made this tense variation on The Postman Always Rings Twice. Edward James Olmos and Maria Conchita Alonso star as a long-married couple who run a fish store. When a young drifter (Arie Verveen) enters their lives as an employee and inhabitant of their home, he and Alonso commence an affair made all the more dangerous when the couple's creepy son (Steven Schub) moves back in. The ensuing Oedipal competitiveness grows to an explosive finale, and while the mythic underpinnings of the story may be a bit obvious, the film moves as fluidly and is as involving as any of Young's fine work. Lots of suspense, a richly noiresque tone, and terrific acting on everyone's part, particularly Schub. --Tom KeoghMore Info About This DVD Actor(s): Edward James Olmos - Maria Conchita Alonso - Arie Verveen Director(s): Robert M. Ray Liotta stars as a talented medical intern whose life is stalled due to his devotion to a sweet-natured but retarded twin brother (Tom Hulce). This touching film by Robert M. Young (The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez) may sound like a dreary, made-for-television potboiler, but it is full of interesting moments as Hulce's character--a garbage collector--follows his curiosity about the world and his sibling's new girlfriend (Jamie Lee Curtis). Young really works the bond between the two men: at one point he takes an overhead shot of the brothers showering, and it resembles what they must have looked like together as babies sharing the same womb. Hulce and Liotta are great together; it is easy to believe in every emotion they share. --Tom KeoghMore Info About This DVD Actor(s): Ray Liotta - Tom Hulce Director(s): Robert M.
