Take the first Pirates of the Caribbean film, add a dash of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and a lot more rum. Shake well and you'll have something resembling Dead Man's Chest, a bombastic sequel that's enjoyable as long as you don't think too hard about it. The film opens with the interrupted wedding of Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), both of whom are arrested for aiding in the escape of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) in the first film. Their freedom can only be obtained by getting Captain Jack's compass, which is linked to a key that's linked to a chest belonging to Davy Jones, an undead pirate with a tentacle face and in possession of a lot of people's souls. If you're already confused, don't worry--plot is definitely not the... Learn More

No matter the quality of the writing, directing and acting in each individual episode, Hawaii Five-O always had the advantage of the single greatest opening credits sequence in television history. Like The Streets of San Francisco and Miami Vice, Hawaii Five-O made the most of its beautiful locations, especially when it came to its opening credits. From the scenes of Diamondhead and Honolulu to the views of beautiful island girls to the dramatic zoom to a closeup of Jack Lord standing atop the Ilikai Hotel, the credits sequence always got the show off to a rousing start a la the gunbarrel openings in the James Bond films. The acting may be stiff and somewhat "Dragnet-like", but the opening and the locations more than make up for it. Thankfully, Hawaii Five-O will finally be released on... This enjoyable comedy is one of the last Disney live-action films that feels akin to their earlier, innocent films. Jan-Michael Vincent plays the title character Nanu, a parentless child brought up in Africa with unbelievable physical skills (check out his introduction, running faster than a cheetah, played in front of pure-'70s rear-screen projection). John Amos and Tim Conway play a hapless college coaching duo whose fortunes change once they spot Nanu. After a run-in with a smart witch doctor (Roscoe Lee Browne), the two bring Nanu--and his pet tiger--to America, where Nanu finds Jane (Dayle Haddon) and starts to rewrite the record book. The film doesn't age that well, but the little ones will laugh at the shenanigans, especially when Conway is miniaturized by the doctor. Several... Deep Space 9 is by far my favorite Star Trek series. I didn't buy the 7 seasons all at once, but over a period of several months and I'm delighted to have these episodes at my fingertips. The show is just AWESOME! What a wonderful, believable collection of characters it has, and the story arcs they've written are gripping to say the least! This is grittier stuff than we're accustomed to seeing in Star Trek, and it comes off very well.
The huge disappointment with this set comes with the quality of the video. I tried watching these on my high definition television and it looked TERRIBLE! I don't have the vocabulary to describe how it looked, but I found it to be nearly unwatchable. They look great on my 25 inch tabletop in my office though, so at least I can watch them. ... Now the king of Branson, Missouri, Andy Williams ruled the TV airwaves in the early 1960s, and this compendium of musical numbers culled from the show's archives features some surprisingly astute musical moments. Among others, Williams performs with Bobby Darin, Pearl Bailey, Ella Fitzgerald, Bing Crosby, Jerry Lewis, Sammy Davis Jr., Judy Garland, and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Of course the catch is that to see all of these stars at the peak of their powers, you have to watch them performing with Williams. This will allow you to marvel at how it was that an inveterate WASP, who looked like a clean-cut insurance salesman and sounded like a white-bread Perry Como (if that was possible), became a huge star in the 1960s. It will also give you a glimpse at examples of the now long-gone...
