The Dark is one of those sci-fi/action/thriller movies that is big on talent(William Devane, Richard Jaeckel) and not much else. There is a murderer on the loose in L.A., is it an alien? We don't know! Is it a supernatural monster? We don't know!

Tobe Hooper's "Toolbox Murders" is one of those horror films where it becomes a running battle to see if the good parts are going to outweigh the bad by the time we get to the final credits. Since at the end of this 2004 film I was remembering the good parts rather more than the bad parts, I end up rounding up on this film. Ironically the last time I saw a horror film that managed to creep me out as much it was the recent remake of Hooper's "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre." The good parts in this more are visual rather than narrative (to be specific, the nail gun victim is the one that keeps sticking out in my mind), which is why I think the director gets the credit for making this B-movie worth watching late at night in the dark. First, this was directed by Tobe Hooper who has had an interesting if uneven career. He's made some great films like Poltergeist, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Life Force and then some real duds like The Mangler and Spontaneous Combustion. Funhouse falls somewhere in between with enough good stuff to make it worth a view.
The plot is standard fare...A pair of teen couples Amy & Buxx and Richie and Liz go to the local carnival. Since apparently only lunatics are writing reviews of this DVD (not you Johhnykay), I thought I'd better chime in to offer a reasonable voice.
First thing: Stephen King has no approval regarding movies like this. He sold off the rights long, long ago, and thus cannot control when and if they get made, much less the quality of the movies.
Second thing: this is not a good movie. Don't make the mistake of thinking that it is. The plot is ludicrous -- it sort of works on the page, but filmed, it is just silly. That said, the movie is not entirely worthless. Robert Englund is fun to watch as the factory owner, and there are a few decent sequences. "Eaten Alive" was Tobe Hooper's follow-up film following "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre," but it is no where near to being in the same class as they legendary cult film. Neville Brand stars as Judd, a good old boy who runs the Starlight Hotel, a dilapidated place out on the bayou. It turns out Judd is a bit of a psychotic who like to take any of the hotel's guests who get on his bad side and serve them up to his pet crocodile from Africa. My understanding is that Hooper actually had a bigger budget for this film than on "Massacre," but the film simply misses the feeling of terror that permeated his previous film.
