DVD Pirates of the Caribbean - Dead Man's Chest (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)

Take the first Pirates of the Caribbean film, add a dash of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and a lot more rum. Shake well and you'll have something resembling Dead Man's Chest, a bombastic sequel that's enjoyable as long as you don't think too hard about it. The film opens with the interrupted wedding of Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), both of whom are arrested for aiding in the escape of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) in the first film. Their freedom can only be obtained by getting Captain Jack's compass, which is linked to a key that's linked to a chest belonging to Davy Jones, an undead pirate with a tentacle face and in possession of a lot of people's souls. If you're already confused, don't worry--plot is definitely not the... Learn More

Greg the Bunny - The Complete Series

Cheers to Fox for even putting Greg the Bunny on the air, and jeers to Fox for yanking it after a mere season (an ignominious fate it shared with The Ben Stiller Show and Andy Richter Controls the Universe). Ripe for discovery, this cult-worthy 2002 series took its cue from Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and anticipated the subversive Tony Award-winning Muppet spoof Avenue Q by imagining a world in which puppets (or, to be more PC: "fabricated Americans") live amongst humans. Greg, a sweet-natured bunny, lives with his best friend Jimmy (Seth Green), a slacker whose father, Gil (the inestimable Eugene Levy), is the director of the "struggling," "low-rated" children's show Sweetknuckle Junction. Greg prevails upon Jimmy to get him a job on the show, but... More Info About This DVD

Run Ronnie Run!

Bob Odenkirk and David Cross, creators and stars of the HBO comedy sketch series Mr. Show, bravely stretch one of that program's premises and characters into a generally successful, feature-length film in Run Ronnie Run! Cross plays Ronnie Dobbs, a trailer-park nitwit whose pranks find him routinely chased by small-town police. When an L.A. television producer (Odenkirk) discovers Ronnie is a favorite and frequent felon on a reality TV show, he signs Dobbs to his own series (Ronnie Dobbs Gets Arrested!) and re-settles him in Beverly Hills. Unprepared for fame, money, and power, Ronnie tries reinventing his life with mixed results. Much of Run Ronnie Run! is funny, though Cross--always a strong performer--is typically better than the material. The film works... More Info About This DVD

Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd

A passable comedy for delinquent kids and unambitious teens with time to kill, Dumb and Dumberer does for prequels what Jerry Springer did for daytime television. With only faint connection to the 1994 hit starring Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels, this ill-conceived prequel follows the Carrey/Daniels characters, Lloyd and Harry, as they bungle their way through high school. The principal and his demented lunch lady (Eugene Levy and SNL alumnus Cheri Oteri) have hatched a scheme to embezzle funds intended for students with "special needs," and Harry & Lloyd unwittingly recruit a few "intellectually challenged" classmates to fuel the plot. Veteran TV director Troy Miller prefers to keep the humor low and lowerer: Scatological jokes, puerile double-entendres, and juvenile sight... More Info About This DVD

Bob Dylan - MTV Unplugged

Recorded in 1994, Bob Dylan: MTV Unplugged is a brilliant, quietly impassioned performance by one of pop music's most significant figures. Fronting his empathetic five-piece band (Bucky Baxter excels on dobro, mandolin, and pedal steel guitar; Bob himself plays frequent "rhythm leads" on his Martin), Dylan performs four of his best-known and potentially most overdone tunes in the 73-minute show; but "All Along the Watchtower," "The Times They Are A-Changin'," "Like a Rolling Stone," and "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" all sound great, with Dylan, as is his wont, re-casting both the arrangements and melodies. Even better is the obscure "John Brown" (written in the early '60s but apparently unreleased by Dylan until now), a driving, biting war protest song of the kind that made him... The Ben Stiller Show

For its brief and shining moment--12 aired episodes, to be exact--The Ben Stiller Show, which aired on Fox in 1992, recaptured the anarchic spirit and subversively funny voice of first-season Saturday Night Live and SCTV. More too-hip-for-the-room than ahead of its time, the show suffered dismal ratings and was unceremoniously cancelled. It then went on to win an Emmy for best writing and attract a fervent following, enhanced by the fact that the series has seldom been syndicated. This long-awaited DVD release fills not a void, but an abyss. To watch Stiller, Janeane Garofalo, Andy Dick, and a pre-Mr. Show Bob Odenkirk at the dawn of their mostly unconventional careers, romp in the show's opening is akin to watching the Beatles frolic on that football field in...
