DVD Pirates of the Caribbean - Dead Man's Chest (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)

Take the first Pirates of the Caribbean film, add a dash of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and a lot more rum. Shake well and you'll have something resembling Dead Man's Chest, a bombastic sequel that's enjoyable as long as you don't think too hard about it. The film opens with the interrupted wedding of Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), both of whom are arrested for aiding in the escape of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) in the first film. Their freedom can only be obtained by getting Captain Jack's compass, which is linked to a key that's linked to a chest belonging to Davy Jones, an undead pirate with a tentacle face and in possession of a lot of people's souls. If you're already confused, don't worry--plot is definitely not the... Learn More

Billy the Kid vs. Dracula

What's that smell, you ask? It very easily could be this piece of cheese. John Carradine frequently referred to this as his worst movie, and although it is very poor in all ways, it is at least watchable unlike many of his other films such as 'The Astro-Zombies', or his very worst, the appalling 'Frankenstein Island' (in which he only plays a shrieking apparition.) Therefore, on balance, I have to respectfully disagree with John.

In this film, such as it is, John plays Count Dracula who makes an appearance in the old west at a ranch supervised by Billy the Kid. Dracula spends a good part of the film as a bat flying around on a string wearing a top hat. When he is in his vampire form as John Carradine, he goes by the name 'Mr. Underhill' and also wears a top hat and a very creepy beard... More Info About This DVD

Jesse James Meets Frankenstein's Daughter

Maria Frankenstein and her brother Rudolph have fled from Vienna, and have relocated to an abandoned mission in Arizona. Not only did they move there for privacy, the desert offers lots of electrical storms necessary for her experiments. Maria is trying to create the perfect zombie slave by replacing a man's brain with an artificial brain, but her experiments have all been failures. Maybe that's because her brother is opposed to the idea, and keeps injecting her patients with poison. I guess it's poison, since the beaker has a skull and crossbones on it, and underneath that it says POISON.

Jesse James and his partner Hank Tracy join another outlaw gang to rob a stagecoach. Hank, a dimwitted, muscular giant, gets shot in the process. Jesse and Hank manage to escape and, along their... More Info About This DVD

Little Annie Rooney

I really enjoy silent movies. Especially ones with Mary Pickford. This one, while not her best, or maybe not even one of them, remains to be an enjoyable little movie, from 1925. Having said that, I will not go widely into the story of this movie (I really dont know how to write about it, without spoiling a scene in some way), so instead, I am going to make this a review of the DVD.

This DVD is from Terra Entertainment. It is, as you would have gotten from the title of this review, a budget disc. Funnilly enough, it really is not that bad of a budget release either, but it does have a number of bad points. The music on this disc, that accompanies the film, is horrible. It sounds horrible, and was not for this film either, and it really does not fit with it. Ok, there are a few scenes,... More Info About This DVD

Bela Lugosi Meets a Brooklyn Gorilla

This little movie isn't as bad as the title and cast might suggest. Duke Mitchell is no Dean Martin, but Sammy Petrillo does a credible imitation of a young Jerry Lewis. Whether Petrillo's performance is satire or just a blatant rip-off is up to the viewer. The humor is simple-minded, but occasionally hilarious. Charlita (as if anyone recognizes the name) does a passable imitation of Dorothy Lamour in revealing (for 1952) South Sea togs. Bela Lugosi with a twinkle in his eye spoofs his own horror movie character as Dr. Zabor. This flick was made a year or so before Bela fell into the clutches of the infamous Ed Wood. Sadly, it emphasizes Bela's troubled downward spiral career path. Veteran low budget director William Beaudine competently puts the cast through the paces. Artistically (to... Naked City - Death of Princes

There are eight million stories in the Naked City, and this disc compiles four of them from the ABC police drama that should please vintage TV fans with its gritty stories, noirish photography, and New York locations. The quartet included here is culled from the series' second season (1960-61), which was distinctly different from its 1958-59 debut. Stars John McIntire and James Franciscus were replaced by Paul Burke and Horace McMahon as the lead detectives; the half-hour program had also been expanded to 60 minutes. Untouched, however, were the complex, character-driven scripts, powered by stellar actors and directors. Among those featured on this disc are actors Eli Wallach and Walter Matthau, writers W. R. Burnett (High Sierra) and Stirling Silliphant (also the series'... More Info About This DVD

Naked City - Button in the Haystack

After watching both available Naked City (TV) DVDs, I have only one question--where are the rest? Why aren't the other episodes available on DVD? Because, believe me, I and thousands of other Naked City devotees would snap them up.

This particular DVD has my personal favorite, an episode starring a young Robert Duvall as a homicidal maniac holed up in the Bronx. The other has Eli Wallach as a Shakespeare-quoting homicidal cop.

These wee magnificent shows, well-acted and, above all, beautifully written. These DVDs, while free of any frills or features (which would have been nice) are excellent quality. Bring on more! More Info About This DVD
