Take the first Pirates of the Caribbean film, add a dash of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and a lot more rum. The film opens with the interrupted wedding of Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), both of whom are arrested for aiding in the escape of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) in the first film. Their freedom can only be obtained by getting Captain Jack's compass, which is linked to a key that's linked to a chest belonging to Davy Jones, an undead pirate with a tentacle face and in possession of a lot of people's souls. Tom and Jerry, the animation franchise, lasted six decades and saw several geniuses of the form--Chuck Jones, Tex Avery, and Friz Freleng--have a hand in updating and refreshing the series in later years. But Tom and Jerry: The Spotlight Collection, Premiere Volume celebrates the original mastery of producer-directors William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, who took the familiar cat-chases-mouse concept and slowly turned it into witty, unpredictable, and sometimes ironic entertainment. The Spotlight Collection offers 40 restored, remastered shorts beginning with 1943's handsome, Oscar-nominated "Yankee Doodle Mouse" and ending with the fantastic, widescreen 1956 "Blue Cat Blues," very similar to the exaggerated look and feel of former cartoonist-gagman Frank Tashlin's... The box is confusing, the red triangle at the top right states "Two Classic Episodes from the Original TV Series", this would be the 1965 series that is already out on DVD. But the picture on the box depicts the third incarnation of the series from the mid 1990's. Also notice that this DVD is LESS than an HOUR long, only 47 MINUTES. The $5 price no longer seems so cheap, convert this price per two episodes to a complete season box and you would be paying $60 for the first season set already out. Timeless, captivating fun for children and fine nostalgic nonsense for adults, the Harlem Globetrotters episodes from the Scooby-Doo canon border on goofy anarchy. During the four-year run of The New Scooby-Doo Movies on 1970s television, the Mystery, Inc. gang of Fred, Velma, Daphne, Shaggy, and the preternaturally skillful canine hero Scooby-Doo hooked up with cartoon versions of many real-life celebrities (who provided their own voices).
The Harlem Globetrotters, a traveling comedy act showcasing basketball tricks and unsportsmanlike high jinks, had a core team of well-known performers, led by Meadowlark Lemon, who were naturally funny partners in Scooby's ghostbusting investigations. This disc contains two of the three HG programs, "The Mystery of Haunted Island" and...
