DVD Paulie
The human beings are almost as interesting as the title character in this surprisingly subtle and engaging film about the cross-country adventures of a smart-mouthed parrot. As director John Roberts deploys the footage, the bird becomes a vivid personality; every quizzical twist of his head is oddly expressive. The people who interact with Paulie are a quirky and interesting bunch as well, and the casting is topnotch: Tony Shalhoub (The Siege) as a Russian immigrant janitor, Cheech Marin as an open-hearted mariachi musician, and Gena Rowlands as a widowed painter in a footloose Winnebago--all are vividly eccentric individuals, memorable in their own right. There are some tired swipes at the cold-blooded meanies of Big Science (beady-eyed researcher Bruce Davison has Paulie clapped in irons), but for the most part the film respects the complexity of everyone's motivations, and that's virtually unheard of in today's Hollywood, even in films supposedly designed for grownups. --David Chute
Lost in the shuffle with BABE, PAULIE is a marevelously entertaining, heart-tugging little film that I found thoroughly entertaining. Paulie (well voiced by Jay Mohr, who also plays Benny) is a talking parrot whose adventures are relayed to a Russian immigrant (the marvelous Tony Shalhoub). After being booted out of the house of his owner, the young Marie, Paulie is taken in by a widow (splendid Gena Rowlands) and has other misadventures including a brief stint as a singing parrot with Cheech Marin. Bruce Davison (Willard, Longtime Companion) is the scientist who goes back on his promise to help Paulie locate his Marie; Trini Alvarado has a brief but important role in the movie's climax. But it is the ingenious voice casting of Mohr and the strong presence of Rowlands, Marin and Shalhoub that makes PAULIE such a delightful film for the whole family!!!
Super.....unbelievably funny
If you love birds like I do then you will definetly love this movie. The only problem is that after viewing this movie...I wanted to get another bird. This movie is for the family on a rainy Sunday afternoon with some hot chocolate....brace yourself your gonna love this one.
This Is A Delightful Movie For Young And Old!!!
Paulie is a talking parrot who is locked in the basement of a Scientific Laboratory. There he meets a Russian janitor who Paulie refers to as a "mop monkey". However a friendship soon develops between the two of them and Paulie tells his life story and how he got separated from his original owner Marie. The janitor is so impressed with Paulie's adventures that he decides to help Paulie track down Marie. This is a wonderful gem of a movie. As one critic said" Paulie has the walk of Charlie Chaplin, the vocabularly of Mister Ed, the eyes of Bette Davis and the street smarts of any kid from Brooklyn". I just LOVE hhis movie which is a refreshing change from the usual car chases , explosions and actresses who take off their clothes which is so prevalent in movies these days.
They've tried Catzilla, a feline so ferocious it can't be euthanized. They've tried booby traps that Rube Goldberg would marvel at. They've even tried Caesar (hilariously played by Christopher Walken), a demented exterminator whose "Squeak Seeker 2000" mouse-cam will infiltrate even the cleverest rodent's secret lair. But the Smuntz brothers Ernie (Nathan Lane) and Lars (British comedian Lee Evans) just can't win against the tenacious mouse that wreaks havoc in the vintage home they've inherited from their father. That's the one-note premise of this chaotic, lavishly produced comedy that starts on a high note and never lets up, eventually leaving the viewer exhausted. The special mouse effects (live-action, animatronic, and computer-generated) are delightful, and the slapstick is... There are some filmmaking teams that invariably bring out the best in each other, and that's definitely the case with director Carroll Ballard and cinematographer Caleb Deschanel. They previously collaborated on The Black Stallion and Never Cry Wolf, and Fly Away Home is their third family film that deserves to be called a classic. Inspired by Bill Lishman's autobiography, the movie tells the story of a 13-year-old girl (Anna Paquin) who goes to live with her estranged, eccentric father (Jeff Daniels) following the death of her mother. At first she's withdrawn and reclusive, but finds renewed happiness when she adopts an orphaned flock of baby geese and, later, teaches them to migrate using an ultralight. Sensitively directed and stunningly photographed, the movie... This live-action feature follows the adventures of a golden retriever puppy who chafes under his given name of "Muffin" (much preferring his own choice of "Napoleon") and who travels through the Australian outback in search of his canine roots. Plopping, as puppies will do, into a basket suspended by balloons one day, Napoleon drifts from the home of his mother and human family, eventually landing on the rocky shore of Sydney Harbor. There he becomes acquainted with a chatty parrot named Birdo Lucci (say the name aloud, you film buffs) and encounters all manner of animals in the wild: a cagey koala, a maternal kangaroo, an irritated lizard, and the dingoes with whom he wants to bond. The film was produced with an eye toward pleasing young audiences practically anywhere on earth, and the...
