DVD Funny Farm
George Roy Hill (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) directed this 1988 comedy that gives star Chevy Chase one of his better-quality vehicles. Chase plays a New York sportswriter who turns to the country for a simpler, happier way of living. He discovers, of course, that things don't work out that way. Hill's usual touch with comic timing, tone, and dialogue give Chase a rare career opportunity to be part of something a little classier than most of his other movies; but Funny Farm nevertheless has its share of so-what gags. Still, the film's overall tone is winning and laid-back, and it makes for nice escapist fare. --Tom Keogh
This movie stands the test of time and is as funny today as it was when originally released. A must have for your Chase collection.
My only gripe is the package. The case is one of those early cheap cardboard cases. I was a little disappointed in that.

I love this movie. It is so hilarious! I have watched it over and over. I also bought it as a present to my mother.
Underrated and Hysterical
Director George Roy Hill (The Sting, Hawaii) bowed out a little disappointed to the underreaction of the critics and the viewing public to what is actually a real side-splitter and the perfect vehicle for the comedic talents of Chevy Chase.
CC is Andy Farmer, a NYC sportswritier who chucks it all and drags his reluctant wife to Redbud, a theoretically idyllic New England town where he can write the great American novel. But things go horribly wrong and the cranky Yankee locals don't help at all. Liquored-up, maniacal mailman Crumm Petrie, the Sheriff who has lost his driving license, and village na'er-do-wells the Criterion brothers are just the start.
Andy gets writer's block while his wife unexpectedly prospers. The tensions lead towards divorce and they try and sell the house. But who'd buy in such a town of misfits? The unhappy couple pay off everyone in town to act like "normal Norman Rockwell small town people" for the holidays, at least when prospective buyers are around.
The results are hysterical. Get the DVD: repeated viewings are a must.
Even if you are not a big Chevy Chase fan, his combination of deadpan, slapstick, broad humor, and sarcasm are well-suited to the Andy Farmer role.
Yet another bad movie in a lengthy string of losers for all three of the principals involved here: director John Landis and stars Dan Aykroyd and Chevy Chase. Chase and Aykroyd play a pair of bumbling would-be CIA agents who are spotted cheating on the entrance exam. So the CIA decides to use them as bait in a mission to flummox the Russians. Lots of pointless slapstick and mugging, but Landis hasn't made a genuinely funny film since Trading Places. Aykroyd and Chase seem smug and self-satisfied (don't they always?), as though they can rest forever on laurels earned during the 1975 season of Saturday Night Live. Look for a gaggle of film directors (Terry Gilliam, Joel Coen, Costa-Gavras) in cameo roles: that's the closest this film comes to cleverness. --Marshall... John Candy's first leading role was in this 1985 film by Carl Reiner, in which the comic actor played a stressed-out air traffic controller who takes his family on a Florida vacation and has to deal with arrogant, rich jerks. Candy is good in what is almost a straight part (albeit with some jokes), and Reiner keeps the tone in check so his star has an opportunity to show more than one dimension. --Tom KeoghMore Info about this DVD Actor(s): John Candy - Richard Crenna - Rip Torn Director(s): Carl Reiner DVD Release Date: Released the 17 April 2001 Usually ships in 24 hours

This hit-and-miss 1988 comedy pairs John Candy and Dan Aykroyd in a story of one family's summer vacation all but ruined by the uninvited appearance of another, more loutish family. Howard Deutch (Some Kind of Wonderful) directs from a half-hearted John Hughes script, which reduces Hughes's jokes-and-epiphanies formula (The Breakfast Club, Home Alone) to true gaudiness. On the other hand, Annette Bening makes her screen debut here. The DVD release has a widescreen presentation, production notes, trailer, optional French soundtrack, and optional Spanish subtitles. --Tom KeoghMore Info about this DVD Director(s): Howard Deutch DVD Release Date: Released the 01 July 1998 Usually ships in 24 hours

You know exactly what you're getting in National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation: another goofball, slapstick comedy of chaos and catastrophe with Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) and family. This time, there's no traveling involved: Clark and Ellen (Beverly D'Angelo) prepare for a nice Christmas with the kids (played by none other than Juliette Lewis and Roseanne star Johnny Galecki), when their home is invaded by backwoods cousin Eddie (Randy Quaid) and his brood, along with assorted other crazy and/or stuffy relatives. Complications, of course, are inevitable. The film is preceded by National Lampoon's Vacation (1983) and National Lampoon's European Vacation (1985) and followed by National Lampoon's Vegas Vacation (1997). Directed by Jeremiah Chechik, who... More Info about this DVD Director(s): Jeremiah S. Chechik DVD Release Date: Released the 07 October 2003 Usually ships in 24 hours

John Candy has one of his finest opportunities in this film by John Hughes (The Breakfast Club) about a perpetual screw-up (Candy) who gets his act together enough to watch over his brother's kids effectively. The late actor scores big points resurrecting elements of his more decadent persona from SCTV days, but he also has some persuasively touching, sentimental moments. Hughes's direction is not as focused as it was only a few years before, but there's no mistaking his touch. The DVD release has a widescreen presentation, production notes, biographies, Dolby sound, optional Spanish and French soundtracks. --Tom KeoghMore Info about this DVD Director(s): John Hughes DVD Release Date: Released the 01 July 1998 Usually ships in 24 hours
