Unbelievable! Common sense comforting for crying babies

Dr. Karp applied common sense to the "problem" of crying babies that most new parents face, by borrowing from traditions being used around the world to calm babies down as if you had "flipped a switch." He acknowledges the existence of a 'fourth trimester', i.e. the first three months of the baby's life and the need to use techniques to make the baby feel as in the mother's womb to calm him/her down, appealing to their calm reflex.

These techniques are summarized as the five S's: Swaddling (very tight, to resemble the tight environment of the uterus), Side or Stomach position (otherwise known as the football hold), Shushing (as loud as the baby cries), Swinging (making the head jiggle slightly, to replicate the mom's movements with the baby in her tummy) and Sucking (with your finger, or a pacifier in place).

As intuitive or odd these techniques may sound to you, you need to view this video: it will probably make the difference for you as it has for so many parents. As I write this, we're in our last couple of weeks of pregnancy, and we're ready to apply them to our upcoming baby boy. For more information, visit his web site, www.thehappiestbaby.com.

    Happiest Baby on the Block

This video is an absolute necessity for any new parent. We wish we had seen it before bringing the baby home. We purchased it when our baby was about seven weeks old, and it was still a great help. The techniques shown by Dr. Karp are fairly common sense, but if you are new parents (as we are) you probably don't know this simple technique for calming a newborn. His technique worked like a charm. It was an absolute lifesaver!!! A must-have!!!

    Happy baby =Happy Parents

Our 5 month old son has slept through the night since he was 6 weeks old and we owe it to Dr. Karp's techniques. The 5 S's work great...swaddling and shushing are our favorites. This DVD is a must for all new parents. Everyone says we are just lucky, that we have a good baby. I think we have a good baby because we utlized these techniques from the beginning. A well slept baby is a happy baby. Our son is truly the happiest baby on the block, and we are the happiest parents on the block! (And not sleep deprived!) Thank you Dr. Karp for making our first try at parenting easy! By the way, at 5 months he still sleeps swaddled.

Two dozen short segments or "scenes" cover a myriad of baby basics such as feeding, swaddling, and sleep issues. Interspersed are several Q&A sessions that "listen in" on Hogg's real-life parent support groups as a handful of fledging mums and dads ask pertinent questions and wait for Hogg's brief yet satisfactory answers. There's a lot to remember when taking care of a newborn these days: from car seats to colic, from circumcision care to crib safety. Dividing its information into 10 chapters (easily referenced by numbering in the right-hand corner), First Days Home covers baby's appearance, breastfeeding and formula, sleeping, crying, bathing, diapering, health and safety for baby, mom's recovery (hemorrhoids, discharges, and other fun stuff), and family relations. This 56-minute primer can't possibly have the details and depth of a book on the subject but makes the perfect summary for Dad or a babysitter, or a refresher course for a second-time mom. Chapters range in length from 2 to 9 minutes and cover all the basics, most importantly when to call the doctor for either baby or Mom and how to... More Info about this DVD
