This film has the feel of a script that's been resurrected by a writer given the chance to direct his own movie. So it was with writer Jeb Stuart (Die Hard) and this film, his directing debut. The plotting is creaky and predictable in this story of an FBI agent (Quaid) relentlessly pursuing a serial killer (Glover) who, in an effort to intimidate the lawman, kidnaps the agent's child. The action set-pieces show up like clockwork, as this rogue cop battles his own agency in an effort to find his child. Quaid is grim and lifeless, so the film's only sparks are given off by Glover, in a wonderfully shaded performance that keeps you guessing whether he is, in fact, the bad guy after all. --Marshall Fine
As quoted from a online review some time ago: "Switchback never derails....", this film is sure to be worth your time. Beautiful scenery, a wonderfully mixed cast (althought at times Quaid is on the dry side), and spectaculat stunt sequences, Switchback is a masterpiece. Perhaps the plot is predictable and you automatically know that Glover is the killer by reading the cover of the box (they should of put Jared Leto on the cover too, so that the viewer couldn't predict who exactly the killer was), this delightful movie is a enjoyable flick to the end of the credits.
GLOVER'S FILM
SWITCHBACK is a good movie. I felt it had some great suspense scenes and the climax is a different one. Director Jeb Stuart has orchestrated some beautiful snow shots, and utilizes the special effects quite well. The main problem with the movie is Dennis Quaid's performance. I have enjoyed many of Quaid's roles, particularly in "Frequency" and "Innerspace." In this one, however, his stoic, emotionless FBI agent is so wooden and lifeless that I didn't find myself sympathizing with him on the kidnapping of his child nor his quest to find the serial killer. Danny Glover, however, is superb. He demonstrates a wide range of emotions, and even though you know where his role is going to take him, it's a pleasure going along for the ride. The suspense he creates in the scene in the convenience store is acutely eeerie. Jared Leto is okay as the mysterious hitchhiker, but a little more sinister behavior could have enhanced the mystery. William Frichtner as the newly elected sheriff did a commendable job with his underwritten role. (He was also excellent in "Perfect Storm."). This is the first movie I liked R. Lee Ermey. Usually playing the redneck villian, he gets a chance to play a redneck good guy and he seems to relish the change. Ted Levine, the bad guy from "Silence of the Lambs" plays Ermey's deputy with such downhome fervor, he too emerges a winner in the casting department. Basil Polodorous' score was also effective. Not a classic, but it deserved more than it got on its initial release; just wish Quaid had been directed differently. RECOMMENDED.

A slightly above-average thriller/suspense/chase/adventure type movie. Good acting and coherent plot help to move the story along.
Tautly directed and superbly photographed, this crowd-pleasing thriller from 1997 is indebted to Steven Spielberg's Duel, but more closely resembles Dead Calm in its strengths and weaknesses. Kurt Russell plays a stressed-out husband whose wife (Kathleen Quinlan) disappears after their car breaks down in the desert. Tracking her whereabouts leads to an interstate theft and kidnapping ring, and as Russell pursues--and is pursued by--a vicious redneck played to perfection by J.T. Walsh (in one of his final film roles), the movie succumbs to several tense, but utterly conventional action sequences. That doesn't stop the movie from being an above-average nail-biter. When viewed from a cranky perspective, this by-the-book David vs. Goliath story doesn't offer any surprises, and it's a bit sad to watch director Francis Coppola (who also adapted John Grisham's bestseller) squandering his once-glorious talent on such conventional Hollywood fare. In a more charitable light, however, there's great pleasure to be found in Coppola's intelligent, no-nonsense handling of a plot that's every bit as involving as it is formulaic. Coppola also knows how to bring out the best in a stellar cast, and this is the movie (released in November 1997, just a few weeks before Good Will Hunting) that signaled Matt Damon's arrival as a major-league star. Coming after The Silence of the Lambs and Seven, this thriller about a collaboration between two serial killers feels like a pale attempt to cash in on the success of those earlier, better films. That's a pity, because this film certainly has its strengths--particularly in the central performances of Morgan Freeman as a forensic detective and Ashley Judd as a would-be victim who escaped from one of the killers.
