Give credit to director Betty Thomas for making the notorious Howard Stern, self-proclaimed "king of all media," into a nerdish but appealing media rebel who loves his wife and family. Even if you hate Stern's rude radio show, you may discover that the underdog charm of this warm, whimsical film (based on Stern's autobiography) turns you into a fan--for the length of the film at least. Stern delivers a winning performance as the clumsy college kid and aspiring disc-jockey-turned-demon-shock-jock, who becomes an unlikely hero as he battles station managers, network executives, and conservative "arbiters of decency" in the name of unfettered bad taste. Mary McCormack is fine as his understanding wife, Alison, and longtime Stern sidekicks Robin Quivers and Fred Norris acquit themselves nicely appearing as themselves. By the end of this smart, funny little film, don't be surprised if you find yourself cheering for the slob. --Sean Axmaker

Where has all the other Howard on video gone?

This was OK I guess. Not my favorite but I understand at the time it was a love letter to his wife. OK fine, I've been listening to Howard since he was on WNBC in the afternoon in the early 80s so it is hard to see a watered down sensitive Howard acting on screen. All in all I can't bash this though. What I want to know is where is Crucified By The FCC, US Open Sores, and Butt Bongo Fiesta? They should release those on DVD. They were hilarious. I'll tell you, for all the flack Howard is getting now he used to be much dirtier (and funnier, I think). Anyone remember his old channel 9 show? I wish I had taped those, if I only had known. Wherever those are they need to release those, please.

4 Stars for the FILM, 1 Star for the DVD

Of course the movie deserves 4 stars, however I wish I could say the same for the DVD. What does it take for DVD company to release each DVD enhanced for 16x9 TVs? Nothing!

Recently I bought a laptop with widescreen display and I have a collection of over 600 Dvds. I learned now about "Enhanced for 16x9 TVs" and how important it is, I did not care about it or even know about it since I own a standard TV, however all my Dvds are Region 1 and in widescreen, I never buy fullscreen Dvds. So I did an inventory on my collection and realized the following:

Out of 600+ Dvds, 42 are NOT enhanced for 16x9 TVs and they really look horrible when I played them on my PC. Anyway, according to my inventory, MGM and Touchstone are the worst! Universal, Columbia, Twentieth Century Fox and Warner are the best and Paramount ranks in between.

    Here is some details:

    - 3 of the 42 are Universal (Please note that many of my Dvds are Universal so 3 of them, included Tremors, is not a big deal)

    - 12 of them are from Touchstone (such as Ransom, The Rock, What about Bob, Good morning Vietnam etc) Which is a high number compared to my small Touchstone collection.

    - 2 out of 42 from Warner Home Video. Note that I have around 100 Warner Dvds. The only negative thing about Warner is most of the DVDs come in digipak. However, the latest "2-Disc Special Edition" rate among the best in terms of quality and extras.

    - 14 of them are from MGM.
Sadly, some of my favorite MGM movies are among them such as "A fish called Wanda", "Misery", "Graduate", "Prizzi's Honor", "No way out" etc. MGM Europe has released all those DVDs (Region 2) 2-Disc in special edition including 5.1 surround, widscreen enhanced 16x9. I hope one day soon MGM USA releases them in Special edition like they did with "Fargo", "Rain Man" and "Usual suspects".

    - 6 out of the 42 are from Paramount including good movies such as "Breakdown", "Ghost and the darkness", "Primal fear", "Private parts", "Coming to America" and "48 Hrs".

The reason why they don't release every DVD in widescreen enhanced for 16x9 is beyond me since soon Widescreen Tvs will replace standard ones.

Amazon should add in the description if the DVD is enhanced from 16x9 Tvs.

    rude, rough and tasteless

This half-movie / half documentary on the famous American disc-jockey makes a good watch. Quite in line with its main character's style, the set-up of 'Private parts' goes beyond limits. Starting rightaway with a lady disgustingly telling us what it's all about -- before the picture is on. And just continuing at the end, while showing its credits.

Apart from these gadges, this is a professionally made product. With a good pace. Though not of outstanding quality, it's nice for those prepared to watch a most unusual character. A character called Howard Stern, going beyond limits to become the most listened-to radio-guy in the USA.

Artie Lange - It's the Whiskey Talking DVD

As this fearless 47-minute set amply demonstrates, Artie Lange is not your typical observational comic that goes for the universal experience. "You know when you are [defecating] in the woods…and you're on heroin?" is a representative query. Lange, who appeared on Madtv before holding court as a core ensemble member on Howard Stern's radio show, clearly has issues, and free from FCC-mandated restrictions, he riffs through them all in graphic and profane detail. Lange is at his best when tackling his vices (drinking, drugs, gambling), his lackluster movie career (he refunds one audience member's $10 when he offers a Dirty WorkDVD for Lange to sign), and phobias. In a politically correct world. Lange asks, "Can't we be offensive anymore?" Short answer: Yes, he can, as... More Info about this DVD

The People vs. Larry Flynt (Special Edition) DVD

If the title sounds a bit dry and grim, don't worry--this movie is anything but. How could it be, with a cast that includes Woody Harrelson as Larry Flynt, Courtney Love as his bisexual junkie wife Althea, and Edward Norton as a composite of their lawyers? Director Milos Forman brings his trademark offbeat humor and affection for vividly defined, marginal characters to a biography of the notorious founder of the Hustler magazine empire. Unlike Hugh Hefner at Playboy, or even Bob Guccione at Penthouse, Flynt had no upscale pretensions. He made Hustler as raunchy, tasteless, and offensive as he could, and America both bought the publication and despised him for it. Although presented as a kind of live-action political cartoon, the movie presents the incredible... More Info about this DVD
