I bought this movie trying to find something interesting and didn't expect to love it so much. I have been on a search to find something as intriguing to me as The Adventures of Sebastian Cole and this was it. Almost entirely due to the presence of Michael Greer. Since watching this film I have tried to find other Greer films without much success but this film shows was a great actor he was and how fabulous gay film can be!
The Gay Deceivers - Unsung Classic Gay Cinematic Farce
Sure, it's a low-budget 1969 movie, but the absolutely pristine DVD mastering breathes new life into this underrated gay farce. The sound is a bit low and slightly scratchy, but heads and tails over the previous vhs video release. It's like discovering a long-lost friend again! Try to overlook the low-budget origins and some of the dated humor: It's still very timely, courageous, and above all...FUNNY! For those who enjoy Michael Greer's over-the-top flaming performance as the landylady Malcolm, check out his performance as Queenie in "Fortune And Men's Eyes"...very different and fierce! Good statements in "Gay Deceivers" regarding anti-war sentiments and (believe it or not) gay rights. The two straight roommates, posing as a gay couple, ultimately even have a greater acceptance of alternate lifestyles by the film's end. Not to be missed!
Bold and Hilarious
This is an amazing yet unpretentious movie. It tackles sex and the military in a daring, humorous and compassionate manner. It is still ahead of its time. Inexplicably, it damaged the careers of the male leads, particularly Kevin Coughlin, who apparently never made another film until his tragic death in 1976.
Thankfully, this film has been getting some attention recently: it was shown at the Turin Film Festival. Give it a big round of applause for courage and wonderful good taste lurking beneath apparent tastelessness. If there is a better farce about these subjects, I'd like to know about it.
Plot: Two buddies pretend to be gay to avoid serving in Vietnam. The military is after them, and so is Michael Greer, a comedic genius who was also neglected by Hollywood.
If you've got a taste for big hair, broad Texas accents, and gay rights, this mixture of white-trash comedy and coming-out melodrama is for you. Sordid Lives starts out as chicken-fried farce, as a funeral is prepared for a woman who died when she tripped over her adulterous lover's wooden legs; about midway the emphasis shifts to a drag queen unfairly held in a mental institution and the dead woman's grandson, an actor in Los Angeles who hasn't come out to his mother. The tone shifts wildly, and the humor depends on your fondness for the white-trash genre--if you like it, this will tickle your ribs; if you don't, it'll fall flat as the panhandle landscape. But it must be said that the cast (including Bonnie Bedelia, Beau Bridges, Delta Burke, and Olivia Newton-John)... An excellently realised film focusing on that ever so mysterious relations between men and women. Especially those that are tainted by personal gain, manupilation, lies, deceipt, lust, jelousy, revenge and a pile of control issues. This dark, gothic all- girls boarding house is well occupied by the brilliant leads (as well as an outstanding cast of assorted fine young actresses): a very handsome Clint Eastwood ( as a handicapped soldier fresh from battle and eventually a very compromised object of desire) and the rare, unique and gifted Geraldine Page as the ruthless headmistress with some scandalous secrets to hide. Once the lies are discovered , the plot charges dangerously ahead to a wonderfully stunning conclusion that will leave you silent. Fortunately , hollywood hasn't... The moving Yossi & Jagger, at 65 minutes in length, has the focused impact and emotional clarity of a fine short story. A multiple award winner (among other prizes, Yossi & Jagger took a Best Actor honor for Ohad Knoller at the 2003 Tribeca Film Festival), this unusual love tale, set on a snowy Israeli-Lebanese border facing possible Hezbollah incursions, has an unexpected sweetness and buoyancy. Knoller plays square-jawed, no-nonsense Yossi, company commander of an Israeli Defense Forces unit exhausted from sleepless nights anticipating an ambush. The handsome, fun-loving Jagger (Yehuda Levi), nicknamed for his rock-star appeal, is platoon leader and, unknown to all, Yossi's secret lover. The two arrange trysts by going off together on missions, and while Jagger begs Yossi... "HIS SECRET LIFE" is a well directed, good story. You already know what it's about, so I will tell you that I liked the way the characters are portrayed. The people seem real and the theme isn't heavy-handed at all.
An all-around enjoyable movie, I wanted to call "His Secret Life" the best gay movie ever, but I already said that about "Come Undone". Also, this is broader than a gay movie by any comparison. (If you have any doubt, watch this and then see the sex scenes in "Come Undone" and you'll agree that "His Secret Life" is far more appealing to people who are not gay. Tell ya what, if you wanna lock yourself up with a couple great movies then that is the pair.
This very good film, "His Secret Life", is everything that another one I saw is not: "Steam:... More Info about this DVD Director(s): Ferzan Ozpetek DVD Release Date: Released the 25 March 2003 Usually ships in 24 hours

Marked as a smart, sexy romantic comedic melodrama, the roughly made Luster is anything but. Well, it's sort of sexy, but it's not particularly smart, with a plot that takes a full hour to kick in and some pretty forgettable performances by the young cast. Also, for the most part, Luster isn't particularly funny, with a storyline that ends up veering into some pretty ugly and heavy S&M, non-consensual sex, and even suicide.
Set in Los Angeles, with much of the action-taking place in the more seedy areas of Hollywood, Luster opens just as Jackson Jones (Justin Herwick) wakes up from an all night orgy. Jackson is an alternative kind of guy - he has piercings and streaky blue hair, a goatee, and works in an independent record store.
