  • DVD The Private Eyes

Don Knotts and Tim Conway star in The Private Eyes, a 1980 comedy about two bumbling detectives solving a murder. It's an impressively incompetent affair. Every ancient joke falls with a muffled thud as Knotts and Conway ham their way through the pointless story: The lord and lady of a capacious manor are killed, and the lord's ghost seems to have returned to knock off the staff one by one. There's an austere housekeeper, a snooty butler with compulsive twitches, a sexy upstairs maid, a deformed groomsman, and a buxom young heir to the estate, who of course is going to be in some state of undress before the movie is over. People get killed, their bodies disappear, Knotts and Conway wander aimlessly through secret passageways, dimly seeking some way out of this movie. Conway cowrote the script, so he gets most of the blame; Knotts was probably just happy to have the work. --Bret Fetzer

    The Spookiest Comedy

I watched this funny mystery movie when I was back in elementary school and then again when I was in middle school. It was hilarious and it managed to give me a surprise spook in between. This movie is a fantastical spoof of all the old Sherlock Holmes mysteries probably starring Basil Rathborne and Nigel Bruce (known as the most popular Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson). Don Knotts and Tim Conway take you on a happily spookily funny mystery through cemeteries and old haunted castles. This movie is worth a watch for all ages. I don't think of this movie as a classic in the usual sense, I think of it as a comedy that can measure up better than most modern day comedies.

Don Knotts who in my mind is one of the great comedians of his day really takes lead of this movie and brings on some of the mightiest laughs I've ever had. Tim Conway is no slacker himself proving that he can carry the show all the way to the crashing, laughing end. You better not eat or drink during this movie, you'll surely choke or strangle to death. If you love this team up in The Private Eyes then I suggest checking out the movies The Apple Dumpling Gang 1 & 2, which is even more hilarious starring these pair.

Check out The Private Eyes and witness some of the best comedy of your life!

    Diamond in the ruff

This is a great movie with Knotts and Conway. I dont think it was much of a hit at the box office, I remember seeing it several times at the dollar theater - Its defintally one you want in your dvd library.

Great family film....but this DVD is the pits.

I loved this film as a kid, and if you want something to watch with the family you don't have to go any further. Great family entertainment. BUT this DVD sucks. It's a bad pan & scan, mediocre video, okay audio, and no extras. It's very expensive for such a shoddy DVD. I'd skip it for now because the rights should revert and a new version out in a year or so.

    The Prize Fighter DVD

Well the only milestone that this movie has is that it was the first movie made by a then little known production company called Tri-Star Pictures. But that's all. The jokes do not work. It's spoff of the Rocky movies looks a bit more patheic then funny and the script has co-written by Conway and John Myers has all the makings of one that is so full of holes and cardboard charcterization. This movie went straight to cable and we all know that Tri-Star was later bought by Sony. With movies like these, no wonder Tri-Star never really took off on it's own. More Info about this DVD

Don Knotts 4 Movie Reluctant Hero Pack (The Ghost And Mr. Chicken / The Reluctant Astronaut / The Shakiest Gun In The West / The Love God?) DVD

Enjoyed the Reluctant Hero pack very much, despite DVD region problems. These movies have good American humour - and I also enjoyed watching the simple, wholesome culture of life back then. I also think Don Knotts displays a sad side to his characters sometimes which is quite moving. More Info about this DVD

The Apple Dumpling Gang (Special Edition) DVD

Bill Bixby plays a 19th-century gambler who inherits responsibility for three orphans, but the kids in turn have something of value: a huge gold nugget. This Disney film from 1975 is an enjoyable potboiler with its sentimentality under control and the accent on laughs, most of which are provided, not unexpectedly, by Tim Conway and Don Knotts as thieves who want to get their hands on the treasure. An easy, safe film for children. You can't go wrong with this. --Tom Keogh More Info about this DVD

The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again DVD

The 1979 sequel to The Apple Dumpling Gang reunites Tim Conway and Don Knotts as thieves with hearts of gold, this time helping out a soldier (Tim Matheson) whose commander (Harry Morgan) is being undermined by a villainous lieutenant. The film is for kids, but the adult-heavy plot takes this movie in a different direction than its predecessor, which focused on three adorable orphans. The slapstick comedy is good, and supporting cast, Morgan, Matheson, Ruth Buzzi and Jack Elam, are enjoyable, but the freshness of the first film is missing. --Tom Keogh More Info about this DVD

The Ghost And Mr. Chicken DVD

Remember watching this silly little comedy from your childhood? It may not have aged all that well, but is still goofy, good fun. Okay, so you can spot the stunt double, and Don Knotts's twitches are a little more obvious. Still, fans of his familiar routines will be comforted in knowing they can again watch their skinny underdog hero solve the ghost story while winning the prettiest girl in town. Knotts plays a trembling typesetter hoping to become a reporter by cracking the mystery of the local haunted house. To do so, he must spend a night there. Good-hearted, non-threatening, and completely gooey, this is the equivalent of light-weight cinematic junk food. -- Rochelle O'Gorman More Info about this DVD
