DVD Barbarella
Jane Fonda's memorable, zero-gravity striptease during the opening credits of this 1968 Roger Vadim movie is the closest the film comes to a liberated marriage of wit and sex. Based on a French comic strip, the story concerns the adventures of a 41st-century woman, who pretty much gets it on with whomever asks. The sci-fi sets were pretty interesting at the time, though they look rather anachronistic now. Appreciated today mostly as a camp classic, the movie is actually more trying than anything else. --Tom Keogh
having a producer husband is not a guarantee of a good career move. This movie is mostly for Jane Fonda fans.
SOOO Fonda Jane
Jane Fonda was my first crush ever! At 5 years old I saw Barbarella for the first time. To steal a bit from Chris Rock: At five, I didn't know what sex was, but did know it had something to do with Barbarella.
This movie is a classic 1960's romp, just set in outer space. Jane Fonda stars as Barbarella, the classic comic book space heroine who finds just as much time getting out of her clothes as she does fighting the bad guys.
Here we find her representing the united planet of Earth on a planet with an evil queen. Before it all ends, we see "futuristic" gunfights, people getting swished around through tubes, and folks getting turned into stone.
The movie is very "groovy" 1960's and has many scenes of psychodelic fun to it. Imagine what 2005 would look like if Austin Powers had designed it in 1969 and you'd have an idea what this movie looks like. Want to know where the band Duran Duran got their name from? Check out this movie. Want to see a person get smoked inside a hooka? Check out this movie.
Overall, this is a movie I recommend for camp movie junkies, fans of Jane Fonda (who is at her sexiest ever in this movie), and hard core sci philes who want to see where some great ideas for movies have come from.
OH YEAH, for extra thrills, fans of this movie should check out the 2001 movie CQ, a parody/remake of this movie which gives away some of the special effects secrets of Barbarella and shows what it must have been like to film such a movie at such a time.
Mixed Emotions
Well Jane is definately easy on the eyes and the opening scene is nice. However, there is really no story/plot line and no real purpose to the movie at all. The special effects are so bad its almost good. Parts of the movie are worth seeing, overall I wouldn't waste your money.
Raquel Welch in a two-piece fur bikini. That and the title is pretty much all anyone needs to know. If that indeed isn't enough, there are the dinosaurs of technician-artist Ray Harryhausen (along with some superimposed iguanas), and a prologue that tells you all you want to know about this "brutal world." Want more? There are volcanoes, barehanded wrestling with warthogs, and rival, subhuman, cannibalistic tribes--Lord, the list goes on and on! The portrait of humankind isn't the most flattering: we're petty, greedy, we grunt a lot, and we don't play well with others. Welch portrays a cavewoman from the tribe of the Blondes trying to make a life for herself with an outcast from the tribe of the Brunettes, which doesn't sit well with anybody. --Keith SimantonMore Info about this DVD Actor(s): Raquel Welch Director(s): Don Chaffey DVD Release Date: Released the 09 March 2004 Usually ships in 24 hours

Jane Fonda came into her own with this Oscar-winning performance as an insecure high-class call girl who can't make it as a legitimate actress or model yet can't give up her addiction. She loves the control too much. But when she's stalked by a killer, she's forced to confront the darker aspects of her nature and profession. It's a complex and authentic performance and Fonda plays it cool and smart. Typical of early '70s films, Klute peels away social inhibition and hypocrisy with precision and candor. It's also typical of director Alan J. Pakula's intelligence and ability to work so well with actors. Donald Sutherland plays John Klute, the vulnerable detective trying to determine if his missing friend is the stalker and sexual deviant. This is the kind of moody,... If you can stifle the urge to laugh at its pastel unisex costumes and futuristic shopping-mall décor, this extravagant science fiction film from 1976 is still visually fascinating and provocatively entertaining. Set in the year 2274, when ecological disaster has driven civilization to the protection of domed cities, the story revolves around a society that holds a ceremonial death ritual for all citizens who reach the age of 30. In a diseaseless city where free sex is encouraged and old age is virtually unknown, Logan (Michael York) is a "sandman," one who enforces this radical method of population control (but he's about to turn 30 and he doesn't want to die). Escaping from the domed city via a network of underground passages, Logan is joined by another "runner" named Jessica... This 1956 pop adaptation of Shakespeare's The Tempest is one of the best, most influential science fiction movies ever made. Its space explorers are the models for the crew of Star Trek's Enterprise, and the film's robot is clearly the prototype for Robby in Lost in Space. Walter Pidgeon is the Prospero figure, presiding over a paradisiacal world with his lovely young daughter and their servile droid. When the crew of a spaceship lands on the planet, they become aware of a sinister invisible force that threatens to destroy them. Great special effects and a bizarre electronic score help make this movie as fresh, imaginative, and fun as it was when first released.
