  • DVD Black Beauty

Don't waste this one on your children: buy it for yourself. A spectacular adaptation of the Anna Sewell novel, this is faithful to the source material but creates a life of its own on the screen. Told from the point of view of the horse, it recalls a time and a place that could be both beautiful and cruel. Black Beauty faced both hardship and kindness as he passed through the hands of many owners throughout his life. Some are generous, but the agonies endured by the title character may be too harsh for small children. Unfortunately, director Caroline Thompson did not resurrect her magical touch a few years later with another animal tale, Buddy. --Rochelle O'Gorman

One of the Finest Horse Movies Ever Filmed

This version of Black Beauty is not only the most true to the book, it is one of the finest horse movies ever filmed. This is a big budget movie. The costumes and sets for Victorian England as well as the scenery are outstanding. It was filmed beautifully, rivaling The Black Stallion for the most beautiful equine photography in a movie, ever. The story is actually much more true to the book the The Black Stallion is too.

If you have read and loved the book, you won't be disapointed in this movie. Like the book, there are some scenes of horse abuse and death that might be upsetting to really young children. This is not your typical kids horse movie. You do not have to be horse crazy to enjoy this movie. You do not have to be a kid either.

    Black Beauty

The film arrived in perfect condition. The film was heart-rendering and the photography and story were amazing!.....A perfect film for both adults and children..

    Loved it!

It's a classic you have to see it. Its the best movie I have ever seen.

    National Velvet DVD

This classic family film made a star of 12-year-old Elizabeth Taylor in the title role as spunky Velvet Brown, a girl who's determined to enter her horse, Pie, in the Grand National Steeplechase. Critic Pauline Kael called it "One of the most likeable movies of all time." Mickey Rooney costars as a young man who helps Velvet train Pie for the big race. At the last minute, Velvet herself has to ride Pie in the tournament and cuts her hair to pass for a jockey. Anne Revere won an Oscar as Velvet's mother, as did editor Robert J. Kern, who cut together a terrifically exciting horse race. Donald Crisp and Angela Lansbury are also featured as members of the Brown family. --Jim Emerson More Info about this DVD

    The Secret Garden DVD

Filmed before (and quite nicely) in 1949, Frances Hodgson Burnett's classic children's story was remade for this admirable 1993 release, executive produced by Francis Ford Coppola and directed by acclaimed Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Holland. Splendidly adapted by Edward Scissorhands screenwriter Caroline Thompson, the film opens in India during the early 1900s, when young Mary Lennox (Kate Maberly) is orphaned and sent to England to live in Misselthwaite Manor, the gloomy estate of her brooding and melancholy uncle, Lord Craven (John Lynch). Because the uncle is almost always away on travels, struggling to forget the death of his beloved wife, Mary is left mostly alone to explore the estate. Eventually she befriends the young brother of a staff maid and Lord Craven's apparently... More Info about this DVD
