DVD 8 Seconds
The title refers to the time required by all rodeo cowboys to stay on a bull if they want a judge's score. For them, such a short time can seem like an eternity. The same is true of the beginning of this true story, a country tale of Lane Frost, a real-life, crowd-pleasing bullrider who rose to rodeo fame in the late '80s. The characters seem so irrepressibly good, so unreal, that the film comes out of the chute without a buck or much of a purpose. But Frost's story, and that of his relationship with his wife, Kellie (Cynthia Geary), eventually gains momentum. Luke Perry is an underrated actor, and he balances an "aw-shucks-ness" with an internal spark that makes that salt-of-the-earth stuff not so salty. When the film is finally over and the end credits show home movies and stills of the real-life Frost, you'll wish the ride was just a little longer. --Keith Simanton
8 Seconds is a great movie about a good man. There are same things that are made up but thats the way thats HollyWood. For the most part it follows the real life story of Lane Frost and his rodeo career. I feel that it is one of the great movies the any down home country loving person should own.
WOW.....what a ride!
You don't want to miss this underrated, wonderfully acted, brilliantly directed, action packed movie called 8 Seconds. The fact that it's about rodeo bull riding only serves to "harness" the real reason the movie grabs you. It's the love story.....that's what gets you.....the love story! Yes the action shots are amazing, even if you never saw a rodeo or thought it was stupid or boring. Luke Perry is outstanding in the title role as the tough as nails (albeit diminutive) bronco busting cowboy Lane Frost. Despite his skinny lanky stature he makes an impressive showing in the title role. Matching him almost line for line is Steven Baldwin (the nice Baldwin) turning in a great job as Lane's wisecracking buddy. Also giving a great performance is Cynthia Geary.....just great as Lane's wife. Every live, every look, every moment she's on camera is so convincing I swear she must have married Luke Perry after the movie. She didn't? Well you could have fooled me! But the really out of this world credit goes to the director John Avildsen who just runs away with this one. Maybe his best work ever! I especially liked the scene where a young Rene Zellwegger knocks on the door playing a rodeo groupie. I expected to hear her say: "shut up, just shut up, you had me from hello". But that's another movie. You have to buy this. It's too good not to enjoy over and over. A modern day classic!
The life of american legend Lane Frost...
This is a movie about Lane Frost, a skinny bullrider who worked his way to the top through hard work, only to be taken from us at his peak. Shows his life and relationship troubles with his wife and trying to live up to his fathers expectations. A great modern day American story!
Luke Perry stars in this biography of the late Lane Frost, a champion bull rider who in 1987 won a rodeo world championship at the tender age of 21. In Eight Seconds (the title refers to the minimum amount of time a rider must stay on a bull in competition), Lane Frost is a young man from Oklahoma who learns to ride, hoping to win the approval of his emotionally distant father. As Lane works his way up the rodeo circuit with his best friend Tuff Hedeman (Stephen Baldwin), he meets Kelly Kyle (Cynthia Geary), a pretty barrel-race rider with whom he falls in love.
Lane and Kelly marry, but Lane stubbornly refuses any help from Kelly's wealthy parents, forcing the young couple to live a hand-to-mouth existence, and while Lane's dedication to rodeo and its fans earns him a devoted following, it also keeps him away from Kelly and threatens to sink their relationship.
Lane's hard work pays off when he wins the 1987 world championship, but the danger of the sport catches up with him two years later, when he dies as a result of an accident during competition. Country star Vince Gill appears onscreen with his band; keep an eye peeled for a brief appearance by Renee Zellweger, two years before her breakthrough role in Jerry Maguire.
So King George is not the best actor...he can sure sing though! Even though George could use help in the acting department, I love this movie! More Info about this DVD Director(s): Christopher Cain DVD Release Date: Released the 27 May 1998 Usually ships in 24 hours

I don't typically like cowboy/rodeo/country-western movies because those types of things aren't really my style. But this movie was a pleasant surprise; I did enjoy the story, and as a film, it wasn't half bad. It may or may not be a favorite in its genre, but I found it entertaining. Sutherland and Thomas play Hank & Eli quite well, and as usual Daryl Hannah is perfect in her role (who, fittingly, is a vegetarian). Molly Ringwald, I'll admit, did seem a tad useless as the movie went on--not Ringwald herself, exactly, but her character's importance. As far as rodeo movies go, this is a pretty cute one. Celia does sort of fall out of the story too fast, and the entire sad ending is focused on--to me at least--showing the absurdity of riding an animal who can kill you, as a sport. It... Somebody in Hollywood thought there was some fish-out-of-water potential in this teaming of wild man Woody Harrelson and slow-burning Kiefer Sutherland as a pair of New Mexico cowboys who go to New York to tame the wild, wild, uh ... East. Well, they were mistaken, because this 1994 action-comedy is little more than a tiresome reworking of Crocodile Dundee. Woody and Kiefer head for the Big Apple to rescue the illegal-immigrant daughter of one of their rodeo buddies (who has mysteriously disappeared), and what they discover is a sweatshop operation run by a hot-tempered thug (Dylan McDermott, before his role on TV's The Practice). That's when the boys start using their ropin' and shootin' skills to foil the bad guys. One measure of this film's credibility is the inevitable... John Travolta traded in disco duds for a cowboy hat in this corny love story about a working man who breaks up with his girlfriend (Debra Winger), then plays out their relationship's turmoil inside a huge honky-tonk called Gilley's. The story essentially parallels Travolta's prior hit film, Saturday Night Fever, in its blend of ordinary life, incomplete relationships, and personal pride channeled into niche stardom at a neighborhood club. But for all its regional flavor, Urban Cowboy never enjoys the immediacy and urgency of Fever, and after awhile you can't help but feel bemused by the macho silliness of ongoing "mechanical bull" competitions (basically a faux rodeo device only brave men can master at great chiropractic risk). The Travolta-Winger relationship is...
