  • DVD Trading Places

In this crowd-pleasing 1983 comedy of high finance about a homeless con artist who becomes a Wall Street robber baron, Eddie Murphy consolidated the success of his startling debut in the previous year's 48 Hours and polished his slick-winner persona. The turnabout begins with an argument between super-rich siblings, played by Ralph Bellamy and Don Ameche: Are captains of industry, they wonder, born or made? To settle the issue, the meanies construct a cruel experiment in social Darwinism. Preppie commodities trader Dan Aykroyd (perfectly cast) is stripped of all his worldly goods and expelled from the firm, and Murphy's smelly derelict is appointed to take his place, graduating to tailored suits and a world-class harem in record time. Eventually the two men team up to teach the nasty old manipulators a lesson, cornering the market in frozen orange juice futures in the process. Director John Landis (The Blues Brothers) doesn't have the world's lightest touch, but he hits most of the jokes hard and quite a few of them pay off. Trading Places is also a landmark film for fans of Jamie Lee Curtis. --David Chute

A Comedy That Still Retains Its Charm!

"Trading Places" came out nearly 24-years-ago, and yet I still find it a charming and funny comedy. Sure, some of the film [a lot in fact] is dated, but the film is hilarious nonetheless. This is one of those comedies that really reminds me of the Reagan years. I think the charm of the film is not so much Dan Aykroyd or Eddie Murphy; but the two actors from the Golden Age of Hollywood: Ralph Bellamy and Don Ameche. These two stars, whose portrayal of money-grubbing tight wads, were hilarious from the beginning of the film to the end: And yet in real life, both of these men were known for their philanthropy and charitable work throughout their lives.

The two of these late great actors, [Bellamy and Ameche] must have had a field day with their roles as bigoted misers. However, Dan Aykroyd as the uptight rich snob was pretty good himself. I found the films premise of the two brothers involved in a wager about whether environmental factors or hereditary factors are what influences a persons success to be pretty darn funny. And it's especially funny when all they wager is one measly dollar as they go about destroying the lives of people around them. The late Denholm Elliot gives a fine performance as the butler who finds his job as tasteless as the two brothers he works for. Highly recommend.

    Love this comedy

I've owned this DVD for a few years now. Its one of my favorite comedies of all time. I highly recommend it. Purchase it today!

    One Great Movie

Both Eddie Murphy & Dan Aykroyd give excellent performances! This from the period where Eddie Murphy made funny movies. It is a Prince & Pauper tale updated and with Eddie Murphy given the job, house and buttler of Dan Aykroyd. Try it, you'll like it.

    Coming to America DVD

Half of the characters in this 1988 John Landis potboiler seem to be played either by Eddie Murphy or costar Arsenio Hall, swaddled in elaborate Rick Baker makeup appliances that render them unrecognizable but also weirdly immobile. As a pampered African prince who journeys incognito to Queens, New York, to find a bride who will love him just for himself, Murphy manages to look smug and naive at the same time. There are enjoyable sequences of Murphy's Prince Akeem applying his lordly manner to his new job in a fast-food emporium, and falling for the boss's spirited daughter (Shari Headley), who teaches him how to party down, American style. But the fish-out-water premise is never fully exploited. Star spotters will have a field day locating Cuba Gooding Jr., Donna Summer, Louie Anderson,... More Info about this DVD

Beverly Hills Cop - The Complete Line Up DVD

When I review movies, especially in box sets, I assume readers are looking over reviews to find information about the bonus material and overall "gift set" quality rather than the actual movie. This might be assuming too much, but I believe people will be reading reviews of movies they have seen and would like to purchase.

I have two main issues with some box sets. Some companies like to use a cardboard or heavy paper case to house each DVD in a box set. These cases are also used for individual DVDs by some, but they are not as sturdy as the plastic cases. The other issue is about the bonus material or edition. Many box sets are simply a grouping of movies in a series that are placed in a box. Some box sets are not comprised of special editions of the movies, and some... More Info about this DVD

    48 HRS DVD

Before the action-oriented "buddy movie" formula settled into place in the 1980s and 1990s with the Lethal Weapon films, Walter Hill's 48 HRS. presented a much more irreverent and politically incorrect version of the genre. Eddie Murphy made an auspicious film debut alongside veteran Nick Nolte's consummate performance as a worn cop. Murphy plays a convict on a two-day furlough from prison to help capture his former partner (James Remar). The intense animosity between his character and Nolte's impatient detective is rude and violent--albeit in a comic way--and the film's racist and sexist banter is so ubiquitous that some viewers might be turned off. (This early, raw Murphy is not the Murphy of The Nutty Professor.) Then again, sometimes deliberate overkill is funny... More Info about this DVD

Ever caught yourself wondering what exactly "Noonan" means? To avoid further embarrassment, every golfer--hack or scratch--must tee it up at Bushwood Country Club for the golf classic Caddyshack. Harold Ramis directs a who's who of 1970s and 1980s stand-up and sketch comedy: Bill Murray, Chevy Chase, and Rodney Dangerfield battle the forces of greed, golf, and gophers in a film that has become a comedy classic.--Richard M. Beverly Hills Cop (Special Collector's Edition) DVD

While its sequels were formulaic and safe, the first Beverly Hills Cop set out to explore some uncharted territory, and succeeded. A blend of violent action picture and sharp comedy, the film has an excellent director, Martin Brest (Scent of a Woman), who finds some original perspectives on stock scenes (highway chases, police rousts) and hits a gleeful note with Murphy while skewering L.A. culture. Good support from Judge Reinhold and John Ashton as local cops not used to doing things the Detroit way (Murphy's character hails from the Motor City). Paul Reiser has a funny, brief moment at the beginning, and Bronson Pinchot makes a hilarious impression in a great, never-to-be-duplicated scene with the star. --Tom Keogh More Info about this DVD
