  • DVD Swordfish

Swordfish is a superficial movie, so let's address the superficial facts: Halle Berry was well paid to bare her breasts in this gratuitous cyber-action thriller, and while Berry's many fans will enjoy a cheap drool at the actress's expense, her brief topless scene doesn't justify this insipid parade of glossy violence from the director of 2000's Gone in 60 Seconds. Add yet another notch in John Travolta's bad-movie belt, and you've got Hollywood bankruptcy in full blossom. Go ahead, marvel at director Dominic Sena's biggest money shot--a 360-degree pan as a robbery hostage is blown to bits by a bomb that pelts a surrounding SWAT squad with deadly ball bearings.

The plot, as if it matters: Travolta's a slick, self-appointed antiterrorist who recruits a top-flight computer hacker (Hugh Jackman) to transfer a $9.5 billion government slush fund into a cluster of secret accounts. Berry's the curvaceous bait who lures Jackman into the scheme; Don Cheadle's an FBI agent hot on their tails; and an obligatory subplot turns Jackman's daughter (Camryn Grimes) into an innocent bargaining chip. By the time a hostage transport bus is airlifted in the film's not-so-thrilling climax, Swordfish will hold your passive attention or put you to sleep--it all depends on your tolerance for Sena's brand of derivative bloodlust. It's pornography of a sort, and efficiently mechanical, but you can bet good money that Berry and her costars didn't cash their paychecks proudly. --Jeff Shannon

    Review(s): DVD Swordfish
    Sordid Fish

SWORDFISH is always Slick and Glossy. Unfortuantely SWORDFISH is also stilted and inane. This screenplay idea has been shot many times already and usually better. But, this version follows and borrows from THE MATRIX allowing for some impressive slow motion explosions.

John Travolta, wearing a ridiculous make-up design that never looks natural, replays his villain from BROKEN ARROW and is shown up by the... ummm... physical performance by HALLE BERRY who brightens the scenes with her 'tonality'. HUGH JACKMAN plays a bland everyman that also gets lost behind Halle Berry's "Charms."

The DVD offers far more than the flick deserves including alternate endings and a couple documentaries. But, its the video and audio transfer that will shake your home entertainment system.

    Should get it!

This is a movie that I just simply enjoy, what more can I say!

    Just get it!

    Having a bad hair day?

Watching this movie makes you realise you will never have a bad hair day again, not compared to John Travolta anyway. Along with agreeing to be in more than his fair share of flop movies, his hair is dreadful. I think his wife should be sorting him out. In this, much like Pulp Fiction, he has an overly greasy bob - but he also has what looks like blonde highlights on top. Hello?! No, no, no. Shave it off and start again. Oh, I'm sorry, you've already done that and it looks worse?!

This film has had more publicity about Halle Berry getting paid squillions for the flash of flesh than anything else. Frankly, not that impressed. She got paid how much for how little? Quite literally. Why guys drool, I have no idea. Anyone else think this was just for the guys, and to make guys go see it, considering there was so much publicity?

Now onto the good points of the movie. Two words: Hugh Jackman. There's a fine speciman of a man. Apart from the hoop earring he sports in this. Again: no, no, no! I liked him as a Wolverine, and even have a poster of him up as Wolverine on my wall. And no, it's not just the leather that does it for me, as one guy suggested (unless he's willing to wear it, now there's an idea!), it's the whole look. I'm not keen on him in other films, he was alright in Van Helsing, but the hair was too long, and he was OK in this, just the earring. I'm very particular when it comes to my men. And was that a real tattoo?

I found the storyline to be very complicated, although I managed to follow it just a little. I managed to understand what was going on. Look out for the absolutely stunning falling down a cliff scene - that blew me away!

This film would not have worked with 9/11 and the recent London bombings 7/7, and was withdrawn from cinemas shortly after 9/11. There's mentions of terrorists, and scenes of exploding buildings, and the film in general will make you feel a little edgy due to this.

Also look out for a number of stars in this: Tate Donovan appears (and dies); Vinnie Jones is thankfully silent nearly all the way through; Drea de Matteo (Joey's sister Gina) in a blink-and-you'll-think-you-saw-a-familiar-face-role and also, Ann, Sam & Margaret Travolta appear as hostages in scenes. Although you have to read the cast listing to find that out.

This was quite an entertaining little film, and nearly made it to being a four-star review, just Halle Berry was unnecessary in this film, apart from being there to entertain the guys.

    Face/Off DVD

At his best, director John Woo turns action movies into ballets of blood and bullets grounded in character drama. Face/Off marks Woo's first American film to reach the pitched level of his best Hong Kong work (Hard-Boiled). He takes a patently absurd premise--hero and villain exchange identities by literally swapping faces in science-fiction plastic surgery--and creates a double-barreled revenge film driven by the split psyches of its newly redefined characters. FBI agent Sean Archer (John Travolta) must play the villain to move through the underworld while psychotic terrorist Castor Troy (Nicolas Cage) becomes a perversely paternal family man while using every tool at his disposal to destroy his nemesis. Travolta vamps Cage's tics and flamboyant excess with the grace of a... More Info about this DVD

    Ocean's Eleven (Widescreen Edition) DVD

Ocean's Eleven improves on 1960's Rat Pack original with supernova casting, a slickly updated plot, and Steven Soderbergh's graceful touch behind the camera. Soderbergh reportedly relished the opportunity "to make a movie that has no desire except to give pleasure from beginning to end," and he succeeds on those terms, blessed by the casting of George Clooney as Danny Ocean, the title role originated by Frank Sinatra. Fresh out of jail, Ocean masterminds a plot to steal $163 million from the seemingly impervious vault of Las Vegas's Bellagio casino, not just for the money but to win his ex-wife (Julia Roberts) back from the casino's ruthless owner (Andy Garcia). Soderbergh doesn't scrimp on the caper's comically intricate strategy, but he finds greater joy in assembling a stellar... More Info about this DVD

    Training Day DVD

A powerhouse performance by Denzel Washington fuels this brutal urban police drama, in which a rookie narcotics cop learns the hard way that even good cops can go very, very bad. Washington plays veteran detective Alonzo Harris, a self-proclaimed "wolf among wolves," eager to teach his rookie partner Jake (Ethan Hawke) that normal rules don't apply on the mean streets of Los Angeles. Caught in a web of deception, Jake watches with escalating horror as Alonzo uses his badge (and the support of his superiors) to justify a self-righteous policy of corruption. In stark contrast to most of his previous work, Denzel unleashes his dark side with fearlessness and fury, and the result is excellence without compromise. Director Antoine Fuqua (The Replacement Killers) won't score any points... More Info about this DVD

    Basic DVD

If you thought The Recruit was full of surprises, Basic will spin your head around. Assuming that cleverness is its own reward, this military mystery shares many of The Recruit's strengths and weaknesses, offering multi-layered deception as its dramatic raison d'etre. Copping plenty of machismo attitude befitting a semi-effective thriller from Die Hard director John McTiernan, John Travolta stars as an ex-Army Ranger-turned-DEA agent, recruited by an Army investigator (Connie Nielsen) to solve the fratricide of a reviled Sergeant (Samuel L. Jackson) who was allegedly killed while commanding a Special Forces training mission in the hurricane-swept rainforests of Panama. Two survivors (Giovanni Ribisi in a showboat role, and Brian Van Holt) recall... More Info about this DVD

    Monster's Ball DVD

The unflinching realism and searing performances of Monster's Ball are stunning in all the connotations of the word. Hank (Billy Bob Thornton) and Leticia (Halle Berry) inhabit stark, queasy realities of the contemporary South, he as a death row corrections officer and she as the soon-to-be widow of an inmate (Sean Combs) whose execution Hank helps conduct. In the aftermath of the execution, both lose their children to tragic deaths and they form an unlikely bond. In the hands of lesser participants, the fateful plot might strain credibility and seem tailored to allow for liberal sermonizing about the obvious wrongs of our legal justice system, but director Marc Forster and cinematographer Roberto Schaefer balance the contentious nature of the film's issues--the death penalty,...
