DVD The Andy Williams Christmas Show (Live from Branson)
Andy Williams, venerable singing star of countless TV holiday specials, performs onstage at his own theater in Branson, Missouri, before an adoring audience in 1993. Decked out in a succession of sweaters and scarves, Williams does 25 Christmas classics, dances with women wearing reindeer headdresses, sings along with a children's chorus, and welcomes special guests Lorrie Morgan and the Osmond Brothers (who show up wearing jackets featuring rhinestone poinsettias and candy canes). A number of youthful men and women appear throughout in various production numbers, usually dressed as Christmas carolers or partygoers (think more scarves and sweaters), while the band performs on a stage decorated with Christmas trees and lots of fake snow. This is a very professional production, and if it's schmaltzy and utterly middle-of-the-road, that's no doubt what Williams intended. --Robert J. McNamara
Review(s): DVD The Andy Williams Christmas Show (Live from Branson)
andy williams christmas show
Andy Williams is wonderful as alsways, he sends across a message of complete happiness and alsways makes me and I'm sure many others feel warm. His voice is supberb even at his age, he is well animated and seems to want to please his audience a quality the younger performers don't posess.
Spectacle enchanteur
'Old Andy' is as meaningful as 'Young Andy'
I was initially hesitant to purchase this video thinking that a 'much older Andy Williams' might suffer, voicewise, when compared to the Christmas specials Mr. Williams made in the 1960's and early 1970's. Fortunately, I was proved wrong (!) Although Andy's voice is not as dynamic as it was thirty years prior, his heart, sincerity and showmanship are as strong as ever. The show has, as always, the right mix of Christmas tradition and newness communicated through song, stage sets, background singers and personnel. The good ol' Osmond Brothers are there and do a few of their classic holiday interpretations. At the time of the taping, they had just moved to Branson and opened up their own theater. Lorrie Morgan adds to the mix also in a wonderful way. Whether it's 'old Andy' or 'young Andy,' if you want to capture that Christmas feeling, you can't go wrong with Mr. Williams. This video will be a fine addition to your Christmas collection.

Now the king of Branson, Missouri, Andy Williams ruled the TV airwaves in the early 1960s, and this compendium of musical numbers culled from the show's archives features some surprisingly astute musical moments. Among others, Williams performs with Bobby Darin, Pearl Bailey, Ella Fitzgerald, Bing Crosby, Jerry Lewis, Sammy Davis Jr., Judy Garland, and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Of course the catch is that to see all of these stars at the peak of their powers, you have to watch them performing with Williams. This will allow you to marvel at how it was that an inveterate WASP, who looked like a clean-cut insurance salesman and sounded like a white-bread Perry Como (if that was possible), became a huge star in the 1960s. It will also give you a glimpse at examples of the now long-gone... It's a shame that the quality is missing on this dvd; I did miss the original release of this, so I had to buy this one. As the other reviewer noted, the cover is pretty cheesy; looks like somebody took a picture off the tv set, and it looks exactly like someone with a bad printer ran off the cover art. The sound is good, but the video is only slightly better than okay. And there are no extras. This is pricey compared to similar products out there, but the big trade-off, is that this is Perry's last Xmas show. His voice held up amazingly well during his long life, and it is nicely displayed here. Despite the negatives, this disc has a lot of charm, and you will find yourself smiling and singing along for much of it. I grew up on Perry Como Xnas specials, and I remember this when it...
