DVD National Velvet
This classic family film made a star of 12-year-old Elizabeth Taylor in the title role as spunky Velvet Brown, a girl who's determined to enter her horse, Pie, in the Grand National Steeplechase. Critic Pauline Kael called it "One of the most likeable movies of all time." Mickey Rooney costars as a young man who helps Velvet train Pie for the big race. At the last minute, Velvet herself has to ride Pie in the tournament and cuts her hair to pass for a jockey. Anne Revere won an Oscar as Velvet's mother, as did editor Robert J. Kern, who cut together a terrifically exciting horse race. Donald Crisp and Angela Lansbury are also featured as members of the Brown family. --Jim Emerson
This film reveals such a very few, the childhood 's epic. Far away his undeniable virtues related with the will and firm resolution to fight against the most challenging and hard to beat surrounding circumstances, in direct allusion to a world in War (1944) , the gradual transformation of a simple and desired hope to win the famed National Race will make both youngsters and future cinema actors (Elizabeth Taylor and Mickey Rooney) all the best they can to train their beloved horse.
A colossal and unforgettable feat of the human spirit; an everlasting life lesson who can work out as a simple fable, but based on the fact of having resisted the acid test of time it constitutes an admirable and unforgettable life 's lesson.
Absolutely recommended for the adults who still haven' t watched it, for the children in progress and for the future generations.
The Most Memorable Horse Movie Out There
This movie deserves nothing less than five stars for its superior script and seems to bring the book to life. This movie's lesson, (actually one of many) is one that forever changed me in "Things come suitable to the time." Nothing can go on forever. We must live our lives one step at a time, ending one phase and moving on to the next. I also liked the richness and deep complexity of each character, and in the wise words of Mrs. Brown, "What's the meaning of goodness if there isn't a little badness to overcome?" No matter how good, pure, honest, and sweet someone might be, there are demons inside of everyone. I am not a goer for the fairy-tale like good guys with the pure evil bad ones because of the fact that the good guys that you have to cheer on just seem too good to be true. This movie is the most meaningful of an array of horse movies I've seen, and being around for over half a century, it is safe to say that this is a timeless classic, one of the best productions of the 1940's. And to be sure to delight families for generations to come. If only they could release it on a better quality DVD...
Classic movie!
This is truly a movie classic. Elizabeth Taylor is the star. Enough said!
Don't waste this one on your children: buy it for yourself. A spectacular adaptation of the Anna Sewell novel, this is faithful to the source material but creates a life of its own on the screen. Told from the point of view of the horse, it recalls a time and a place that could be both beautiful and cruel. Black Beauty faced both hardship and kindness as he passed through the hands of many owners throughout his life. Some are generous, but the agonies endured by the title character may be too harsh for small children. Unfortunately, director Caroline Thompson did not resurrect her magical touch a few years later with another animal tale, Buddy. --Rochelle O'GormanMore Info about this DVD Actor(s): Sean Bean - David Thewlis Director(s): Caroline Thompson DVD Release Date: Released the 05 June 2001 Usually ships in 24 hours

Adapted from the beloved novel by Walter Farley, this 1979 family classic was hailed by no less than hard-to-please critic Pauline Kael, who wrote that "it may be the greatest children's movie ever made." A visual feast from start to finish, the timeless tale of The Black Stallion plays out on almost mythic terms. A young boy survives a shipwreck and is stranded on a deserted island with a graceful black stallion, with whom the boy develops an almost empathic friendship. After being rescued and returning home, the two make a winning team as jockey and lightning-fast racehorse under the tutelage of a passionate trainer, played by Mickey Rooney in an Oscar-nominated role. From its serenely hypnotic island sequence to the breathtaking race scenes, this delightful film is guaranteed to... Lassie Come Home is a classic for all the usual reasons: its timeless, universal appeal, its first-of-its-kind status, and its exceptional cinematography, direction, and performances. What makes this 1943 charmer especially fun for grownups who haven't screened it since their own preteen, pet-obsessed days, though, is a couple of cute-as-a-button cast members. An adorably over-earnest Roddy McDowall stars as Joe, the mostly hapless lad whom Lassie refuses to part with despite his down-and-out family's decision to sell her, for a paltry 15 guineas, to a wealthy duke; and Elizabeth Taylor, already stunning at around age 10, surrenders a sweet if mawkish performance as Priscilla, the Duke's tenderhearted granddaughter, who lends a hand in Lassie's escape from her family's unkind...
