DVD Gossip
Gossip is one of a spate of movies that owe a lot to Cruel Intentions. This time it's rich kids in college, but other than that Gossip stays well within the beautiful-young-people-doing-awful-things-to-each other formula. Lena Heady plays Jones, obviously the Smart Girl because she is briefly seen wearing glasses. Jones hangs out with Arty Guy Travis and Handsome Rich Guy Derrick, who finances their adventures and has a little bit of a lying habit. The three are all in the same journalism class (acidic monologist Eric Bogosian plays the acidic professor) and decide to start and track a rumor for their term papers. They pick rich and beautiful couple Beau and Naomi (Joshua Jackson and Kate Hudson) as the focus of the rumor, and before you know it their juicy story starts spinning out of control into ugly territory and a truly ludicrous climax. There are attempts at making sledgehammer points about the slippery task of finding Truth, but mostly Gossip is about the guilty pleasure of watching pretty young actors be mean to each other. You'll hate yourself in the morning, but watch it anyway. --Ali Davis
A group of college students; Derrick Webb (James Marsden), Cathy Jones (Lena Headey), and Travis ( Norman Reedus) decide to do a college project about gossip. They decide to create a rumor about Naomi Preston (Kate Hudson, if I read one more time someone mention she's Goldi Hawn's daughter I'll scream! We should all know this by now!) and her at the time boyfriend Beau Edson (Joshua Jackson), claiming the both of them had sex durning a party. So, now with their "story", they make sure they're able to spread it at school. We are then able to see just how gossip "works". We hear people make up things by adding things to the story they weren't told! I myself I'm not someone who likes to gossip, so the whole idea of the movie was very interesting. I was really caught in the movie. I enjoyed watching the characters, and thought everyone gave a good performance. I must admit though, I was able to preict the ending, but, I won't spoil it for anyone else. If it wasn't for the fact I was able to see the ending coming, I might of given this a higher rating. I think this movie will be able to entertain a lot of people. The screenplay by Gregory Poirier and Theresa Rebeck is intriguing. It was, I thought, a very original story, that had a lot going for it. Teens will enjoy the movie more I think, because, I think it's aimed at them more (the young cast and characters, the setting on a college campus). This is something "lite" and fun to watch with your friends.
Hot Gossip
This is one of my favorite movies, it's well directed and has a good message at the end and James Marsden is so hot. I'm wondering why people found it confusing because it was pretty straight forward... I'm in my 20's and don't get the comparison of it being a "12-17" crowd thing, it makes me wonder if people who say that even went to college...like drinking and partying doesn't happen..get real. I think the biggest problem is the touchy issue of the rumor being spread having to do with date rape. Overall the movie is worth seeing, the acting was great and I also liked watching the commentary.
Liar Liar
Oh well, another teen movie...This one, however, has an agenda and manages to deliver a message about the power of rumours and lies in today`s world (particularly in a US Campus). The plot focuses three college students, a pretty, arrogant and rich boy, a curious and smart girl and a reserved, shy artist-wannabe. These journalism students create a gossip just for fun (and also for a work they had to make), but its consequences end up being more serious than what they first thought.
Yes, the movie`s premise isn`t bad, yet its execution is not very interesting, delivering a contrived morality tale that, despite some attempts at being hip and surprising, doesn`t dare to go beyond a typical afterschool special. The direction is nothing special, the soundrack is decent and the acting is just a collection of cute faces that present flat and cardboard characters.
"Gossip" is watchable but unsubstancial, an average teen movie that lacks edge and a good script (the ending is particularly ridiculous and childish). Still, some highschool students out there may like this nonetheless, since they probably can relate to it. Anyway, spread the gossip: this flick is worth skipping.
Think of the Skulls as a collegiate Freemason's society--an ultrasecret organization that opens the doors of power to a few lucky Ivy League students, including school rowing star Luke McNamara (Joshua Jackson), a poor kid with a misspent youth. "If it's secret and it's elite, it can't be good," cautions his journalist roommate, but the lure of lavish gifts and cabal-like ceremonies in torch-lit stone chambers is too much to resist--until his roomie is murdered and his own Skull "soulmate" Caleb Mandrake (Paul Walker) is the number one suspect.
There's a campy kick to the initiation ceremonies, ancient rituals in dungeonlike alcoves filled with haze and shadow, performed by enthralled frat boys, but as Jackson flounders at the center of a Skull conspiracy it spins into ludicrous... Adrian has just been released from a psychiatric hospital after developing an extreme obcession with her school therapist. She is given a decent job at a local health club where she meets Brittany, the leader of the local "in crowd". Brittany takes her under her wing and Adrian fits right in...until, that is, Brittany discovers that her crush is falling for Adrian. Now, Adrian will get a taste of Brittany's darker side...a side that she may not live to tell about. Nice, easy-to-follow plot and (towards the end) well-executed suspense make this film a great edition to anyones' summer movie list. A pretty entertaining mystery about Brittany's sister is also thrown into the mix. The only problem about the film, though, is the fact that it takes a while to warm up. But, let me tell you, when... If you think that the only thing impish Kate Hudson (Almost Famous) lacks is a lilting Irish accent, this movie is for you. In About Adam Hudson plays Lucy, the youngest daughter of a middle-class Irish family, who thinks she's found the perfect guy. Adam (Stuart Townsend) not only brings flowers and takes her on romantic getaways, he even gets along with her family. Just at the moment when the sweetness of their romance seems intolerable, it turns out that he's also been romancing Lucy's sister Laura (Frances O'Connor from Mansfield Park and A.I.), for whom he's constructed an entirely different personality. And this is only the first of a series of secrets unveiled and eventually uncovered by the third sister, Alice (Charlotte Bradley). The story of About... This paranoia-fueled thriller, more intelligent and imaginative than you would have reason to believe, owes a huge debt to The Stepford Wives with its premise of a goody-good high school clique programmed by an evil doctor to be wholesome, academically driven, and shining examples of clean living. Unlike its predecessor, though, David Nutter's film opts to open up its premise for everyone to see, diluting the scares but amplifying the creepy atmosphere. There's never any question of what's happening to the students of Cradle Bay High, who go from being druggies and sex fiends to the academically excellent Blue Ribbons, but it's a lot of fun to see these programmed teens run amok--and start killing people--when their hormones kick in. And considering they're all horny teenagers,... Joshua Jackson of Dawson's Creek and ex-model Jamie (formerly James, Pearl Harbor) King are (Lone) star-crossed lovers in this broad rural romantic comedy. Despite the fact that they've recently become step-siblings, Jackson and King are in love and want to flee their small Texas hometown for Hollywood. A kink in their plan arises in the low-wattage form of King's cousin (DJ Qualls), who lands in hot water with the local mob after robbing a drug dealer. Jackson must now make things right with a host of unsavory criminal types and get King to Tinseltown. Jackson is personable as the reluctant hero, and King is easy on the eyes, but the rest of the cast (which includes Matt Davis, Thomas Haden Church, and John Mellencamp) mugs furiously, and the script rarely aims any higher...
