Prior to purchasing this Green Hornet release for myself, I'd read all of the preceding reviews, and to a degree I agree with the views concerning this theatrical/dvd release. Watching it from start to finish I did notice that it'd appeared to be a product of episode splicing and merging in an attempt to feature what many fans of the series and of Martial arts flicks wanted after 1973...MORE BRUCE LEE!!! True...it did seem thrown together in hopes of passing it off as a kung-fu flick, but for die hard Bruce Lee fans like myself(who didn't make it into the world until 1976), this dvd is a must have. The quality wasn't the best, but I'd never seen a single episode of the Green Hornet, and to see him in action on the Hornet series(and with his own voice...no dubbing) was a dream come true. So I recommend Green Hornet Vol. 1 to those who are dying to see more Bruce...and hopefully one day we'll either see a Vol. 2 to this disc if not the entire GHornet series released in a box collection. Long live the Little Dragon(Bruce Lee, R.I.P.)!!!
Nice but when will we get the real series?
Good extras, and an excellent overview of the Black Beauty but how long will we have to wait for an offical TV series DVD?
While it is interesting on its own right it is only recommended for the die hard fan as the editing is way below par. As is the film quality.
A DVD series is a must for release,
How long do we have to wait for this?
This actually WAS a theatrical release - too bad it's cut up
This was released as a theatrical release to cash in on Bruce Lee's death. I actually saw it at an old drive-in that no longer exists in East Rutherford, New Jersey. It's exactly as it was shown it the theater and was so butchered up that it was almost unwatchable. But with Van Williams, Bruce Lee, Wende Wagner and the rest of the cast, along with the high quality for a half-hour series from the sixties, it was worth it. The Action Channel still shows the Green Hornet (along with Time Tunnel and Combat) and I also truly wish they would release the episodes complete on DVD. But, until then, if you don't have the Action channel - this will have to do !!
Republic was certainly best known for serials, but other studios often got into the act. One of these was Columbia Pictures. In truth, Columbia's serials weren't anything to write home about--but there was one exception: the 1943 THE PHANTOM, which cracks along at a memorable pace with an entertaining storyline, some excellent fight choreography, visually interesting set pieces, and a truly fine performance from Tom Tyler in the title role.
Tom Tyler (1903-1954) was a handsome, well-built man who played in well over 150 films between 1924 and 1953--but whose final years was marred by rheumatoid arthritis that reduced him to small supporting roles. But he was very much at his peak in 1941 when he appeared in the legendary Republic serial THE ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN... More Info about this DVD Director(s): B. The last film completed by Bruce Lee before his untimely death, Enter the Dragon was his entrée into Hollywood. The American-Hong Kong coproduction, shot in Asia by American director Robert Clouse, stars Lee as a British agent sent to infiltrate the criminal empire of bloodthirsty Asian crime lord Han (Shih Kien) through his annual international martial arts tournament. Lee spends his days taking on tournament combatants and nights breaking into the heavily guarded underground fortress, kicking the living tar out of anyone who stands in his way. The mix of kung fu fighting (choreographed by Lee himself) and James Bond intrigue (the plot has more than a passing resemblance to Dr. No) is pulpy by any standard, but the generous budget and talented cast of world-class... There's no Batmobile, and Robert Lowery looks a bit, ahem, well-fed as the Caped Crusader, but Columbia Pictures' 1949 black-and-white serial Batman and Robin is up to its cape and cowl in cliffhangers, crime capers, and good old-fashioned rock-em-sock-em action. Directed at a breakneck pace by serial vet Spencer Gordon Bennett, the Complete 1949 Movie Serial Collection's 15 episodes pits Lowery's Batman and Johnny Duncan as the Boy Wonder against arch-villain The Wizard, who has designs on a remote-control device that doubles as a death ray. Jane Adams's Vicki Vale is on hand to fall into peril at least once per episode, while Ed Wood regular Lyle Talbot looks on sternly as Commissioner Gordon. Viewers weaned on Tim Burton's dark, sleek interpretation of the Batman mythos... In 1952 Superman flew right into the hearts and minds of the American TV audience faster than a speeding bullet. Though most people were already familiar with man of steel through his comic books, as well as the popular radio show, it was the new medium's Adventures of Superman that transformed our resident Kryptonian into a timeless icon. For many young baby boomers, Superman was the ultimate symbol of truth, justice and the American way. After watching this nostalgic trip back in time it is easy to see why: George Reeves. Reeves is the quintessential Superman. He is kind, confident, smart, always does the right thing and can literally do anything physically. Even Reeves' Clark Kent is cool, even cocky without any of the trademarked shy, clumsy and hickish traits the character... This is a Batman's fan dream! Never mind that the documentaries have some footage in common. And yes, they could have included more. But with four documentaries plus an extra DVD full of TV spots and tidbits that only a real fan could appreciate, who's complaining? This is a 5-in-1 package no fan of the television series should be without, with three specific documentaries about the actors (Adam West, Julie Newmar and Cesar Romero), one about the series as a whole and a second disc full of extras.
Of all the documentaries, the one I liked best was the Julie Newmar one. Even if her parents were home movie buffs (something I can only assume), it is still hard to believe that there exists so much footage of Julie from her childhood to her twenties! She seems to have as much... More Info about this DVD DVD Release Date: Released the 19 October 2004 Usually ships in 24 hours
