DVD The Best of the Andy Williams Show
Now the king of Branson, Missouri, Andy Williams ruled the TV airwaves in the early 1960s, and this compendium of musical numbers culled from the show's archives features some surprisingly astute musical moments. Among others, Williams performs with Bobby Darin, Pearl Bailey, Ella Fitzgerald, Bing Crosby, Jerry Lewis, Sammy Davis Jr., Judy Garland, and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Of course the catch is that to see all of these stars at the peak of their powers, you have to watch them performing with Williams. This will allow you to marvel at how it was that an inveterate WASP, who looked like a clean-cut insurance salesman and sounded like a white-bread Perry Como (if that was possible), became a huge star in the 1960s. It will also give you a glimpse at examples of the now long-gone TV variety format of yesteryear, in which an easy-going host welcomed guest stars weekly to sing pop songs of the day and do skits (catch Judy Garland teaching Andy how to apply clown makeup in pantomime). --Marshall Fine
I'm too young to remember his TV show, and I've been kind of lukewarm to Williams' records, other than the occasional brilliant song or single. But he really shines in this hour long special. This is mostly songs with some comedy thrown in, so you're not going to get a lot of sketch humor, but you do get performers like Tony Bennett, Bobby Darin, and composer Antonio Carlos Jobim accompanying Williams. Williams more than holds his own with all the performers, and as a bonus he dances with Henry Mancini. You don't get any of his hits other than "In the Arms of Love" and a spooky version of "Moon River" that plays over the DVD menu on an endless loop. My favorite is Williams' duet with Tony Bennett and his solo version of the relatively unknown title song from "The Pawnbroker" which is just excellent.
This is a definite must own if you like classic pop music and/or variety shows and stands up to repeated viewings.
Great retrospective--but only 3 or 4 seasons represented
This is an excellent DVD that hightlights Andy's pick of what he felt were some of his best moments during his TV show broadcast from 1962 to 1971. This is excellent viewing material and just plain fun for both those who are starting to get to be familiar with Andy Williams' work as well as those taking a stroll down memory lane. The quality of the picture and sound is excellent and the guests are very talented people. My only disappointment was that maybe Andy could have added other moments from other seasons of his shows--the majority of the clips are from the years 1965 to 1967. I vote this as a BUY; and I would have given it five stars were there more moments from other seasons added. Maybe this calls for a volume two? GRIN
A really great voice.
This guy can really sing. When Andy sings "The Way You Look Tonight",he hits notes and holds them as few singers can. This was truly a classic singing performance. It is so nice to see and hear some of the great performers singing and my only gripe is that this very entertaining DVD should be longer. How about volume 2 Andy?
Le spýcial de Noýl d'Andy Williams est pour moi le symbole le plus significatif que Noýl approche. Andy Williams, venerable singing star of countless TV holiday specials, performs onstage at his own theater in Branson, Missouri, before an adoring audience in 1993. Decked out in a succession of sweaters and scarves, Williams does 25 Christmas classics, dances with women wearing reindeer headdresses, sings along with a children's chorus, and welcomes special guests Lorrie Morgan and the Osmond Brothers (who show up wearing jackets featuring rhinestone poinsettias and candy canes). A number of youthful men and women appear throughout in various production numbers, usually dressed as Christmas carolers or partygoers (think more scarves and sweaters), while the band performs on a stage decorated with Christmas trees and lots of fake snow. This is a very professional production,... More Info about this DVD Actor(s): Andy Williams DVD Release Date: Released the 30 November 1999 Usually ships in 24 hours

In some shots Perry looks SO young! But in a few songs from his show, he looks exactly the way I remembered him when I first saw him on Italian TV: very handsome and yet very casual and the "big brother" type! And what a voice! The quality of the sound is good... The picture is better than I expected. But I think it should have included more popular hits... Perhaps next time? When is another DVD coming out?
