  • DVD Toy Story

There is greatness in film that can be discussed, dissected, and talked about late into the night. Then there is genius that is right in front of our faces--we smile at the spell it puts us into and are refreshed, and nary a word needs to be spoken. This kind of entertainment is what they used to call "movie magic," and there is loads of it in this irresistible computer animation feature. Just a picture of these bright toys reawaken the kid in us. Filmmaker John Lasseter thinks of himself as a storyteller first and an animator second, much like another film innovator, Walt Disney.

The 10th anniversary edition of the landmark film repackages most of the extras found in the original Ultimate Toy Box set plus a few more. Two keen retrospectives are new, one with an assortment of talents including Roy Disney and Peter Jackson chiming in on the film's impact. The other is a roundtable with Lasseter and three of the creators simply talking about the experiences without--thankfully--any cutaways to noisy film clips. There's a load of other extras since the Ultimate Toy Box was one of the first and best DVD sets. Missing (besides the second film, which will be released separately) is the effects- and music-only tracks. Added is a whopping DTS soundtrack along with a remixed Dolby 5.1 track. The DVD has a higher transfer bit rate for a better picture, but only high-end enthusiasts will notice it. Since the film is a digital-to-digital transfer, both versions are eye-popping. A must-have set unless you have the Ultimate Toy Box.

Lasseter's story is universal and magical: what do toys do when they're not played with? Cowboy Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks), Andy's favorite bedroom toy, tries to calm the other toys (some original, some classic) during a wrenching time of year--the birthday party, when newer toys may replace them. Sure enough, Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) is the new toy that takes over the throne. Buzz has a crucial flaw, though--he believes he's the real Buzz Lightyear, not a toy. Lasseter further scores with perfect voice casting, including Don Rickles as Mr. Potato Head and Wallace Shawn as a meek dinosaur. The director-animator won a special Oscar for "the development and inspired application of techniques that have made possible the first feature-length computer-animated film." In other words, the movie is great. --Doug Thomas

    Review(s): DVD Toy Story
Landmark new release of a landmark film

The movie's the same - that is to say, "awesome." But what's even more awesome about this new DVD release are the video and audio standards. The toys always looked terrific, no matter what release format we were watching, but now... details in the backgrounds leap out like never before (check out the really grungy floor in Sid's room), even soft edges stay more defined and in focus and difficult colors like red are truer and no longer bleed. The audio offers much sharper detail, a truer, more up-front sound and wider dynamic and frequency ranges. It's as if someone took window cleaner and polished up the whole presentation. IMO, Pixar's higher bit-rate really paid off - to the point where viewing other DVDs in my collection is now a bit disappointing! Talk about setting a benchmark.

I didn't mention that you no longer need to buy the big 3-disc set to get the special "making-of" features. Just one caveat: I'm sorry that "Tin Toy" wasn't included this time around.

Now I can't wait to see what TS2 is going to be like! "Tin Toy," anybody?

    Roy

One of the greatest movies of all time returns on DVD!

In a world where toys come to life when no one is around, a cowboy doll named "Woody" ( voiced by Tom Hanks)was Andy's favorite toy but now that it's his birthday he gets a new favorite which a space ranger action figure named "Buzz Lightyear" ( voiced by Tim Allen) that talks, glows in the dark, uses lasers and has wings starts to make woody a bit jealous. He one day pushes Buzz out of the window that leads him and woody on a adventure to return back home all the way from Pizza Planet to the evil toy torturing kid Sid's house as they must return back to their master before they move.

A momumental movie that became the world's first computer animated motion picture and made movie history! it has became a phenomenon ever since it's release on november 18th 1995, critics and audiences were amazed by the wizardy and storytelling of this movie. Alongside this movie is an impressive cast that includes Annie Potts, Jim Varney ( Ernest), John Ratezenberg, Wallace Shawn and Don Rickles, this movie is a true classic that will be loved for generations.

The new 2-Disc DVD includes great picture & Sound thanks to THX digital! there's a sneek preview of Pixar's upcoming "Cars" movie and a boatload of extras like commentary, documentaries including on how it inspired Peter Jackson and George Lucas, deleted scenes, a claw game, publicity, design galleries, easter eggs, language reel, set design and more. If you missed out on this on DVD before, then get this movie cause it makes a great addition to your collection.

    Toy Story 2 DVD

John Lasseter and his gang of high-tech creators at Pixar create another entertainment for the ages. Like the few great movie sequels, Toy Story 2 comments on why the first one was so wonderful while finding a fresh angle worthy of a new film. The craze of toy collecting becomes the focus here, as we find out Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks) is not only a beloved toy to Andy but also a rare doll from a popular '60s children's show. When a greedy collector takes Woody, Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) launches a rescue mission with Andy's other toys. To say more would be a crime because this is one of the most creative and smile-inducing films since, well, the first Toy Story.

Although the toys look the same as in the 1994 feature, Pixar shows how much technology has advanced:... More Info about this DVD

    Cinderella (Two-Disc Special Edition) DVD

Worry not, Disney fans--this special edition DVD of the beloved Cinderella won't turn into a pumpkin at the strike of midnight. One of the most enduring animated films of all time, the Disney-fied adaptation of the gory Brothers Grimm fairy tale became a classic in its own right, thanks to some memorable tunes (including "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes," "Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo," and the title song) and some endearingly cute comic relief.

The Incredibles (Widescreen 2-Disc Collector's Edition) DVD

After creating the last great traditionally animated film of the 20th century, The Iron Giant, filmmaker Brad Bird joined top-drawer studio Pixar to create this exciting, completely entertaining computer-animated film. Bird gives us a family of "supers," a brood of five with special powers desperately trying to fit in with the 9-to-5 suburban lifestyle. Of course, in a more innocent world, Bob and Helen Parr were superheroes, Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl. But blasted lawsuits and public disapproval forced them and other supers to go incognito, making it even tougher for their school-age kids, the shy Violet and the aptly named Dash. When a stranger named Mirage (voiced by Elizabeth Pena) secretly recruits Bob for a potential mission, the old glory days spin in his head, even if... More Info about this DVD

    A Bug's Life (Collector's Edition) DVD

There was such a magic on the screen in 1995 when the people at Pixar came up with the first fully computer-animated film, Toy Story. Their second feature film, A Bug's Life, may miss the bull's-eye but Pixar's target is so lofty, it's hard to find the film anything less than irresistible.

Brighter and more colorful than the other animated insect movie of 1998 (Antz), A Bug's Life is the sweetly told story of Flik (voiced by David Foley), an ant searching for better ways to be a bug. His colony unfortunately revolves around feeding and fearing the local grasshoppers (lead by Hopper, voiced with gleeful menace by Kevin Spacey). When Flik accidentally destroys the seasonal food supply for the grasshoppers he decides to look for help ("We need bigger... More Info about this DVD

    Bambi (Two-Disc Special Edition) DVD

It always comes up when people are comparing their most traumatic movie experiences: "the death of Bambi's mother," a recollection that can bring a shudder to even the most jaded filmgoer. That primal separation (which is no less stunning for happening off-screen) is the centerpiece of Bambi, Walt Disney's 1942 animated classic, but it is by no means the only bold stroke in the film. In its swift but somehow leisurely 69 minutes, Bambi covers a year in the life of a young deer. But in a bigger way, it measures the life cycle itself, from birth to adulthood, from childhood's freedom to grown-up responsibility. All of this is rendered in cheeky, fleet-footed style--the movie doesn't lecture, or make you feel you're being fed something that's good for you. The animation is... More Info about this DVD
