DVD Unlawful Entry
Jonathan Kaplan (The Accused) directed this creepy thriller about an outwardly friendly cop (Ray Liotta) who attaches himself to a married couple (Kurt Russell, Madeleine Stowe) whom he helps during a crisis. In short order, he's revealed to be a psychopath who wants Russell's wife, but the film is about more than Liotta's mental state. A bold script and Kaplan's astute direction peel away the layers of masculine identity in the male leads and underscore the painful conflicts good men feel when faced with classic territorial challenges. This is not as profound as Straw Dogs, but it is honest and provocative, until mayhem overcomes the final act. --Tom Keogh
This - along with Breakdown - are two of the best thrillers. This also stars Ray Liotta who is fantastic in almost everything he acts in. He is a cop who comes to Madeline Stowe and Kurt Russells house after a break in. He becomes obsessed with Madeline Stowe and weaves his way into their lives. When Kurt gets the picture of what is going on, there is almost nothing he can do, because with Ray being a cop, it can be hard to prove that he's a bad guy. How can you report this guy to the police? What do you do when there's almost nothing else to do? This is a great movie and any thriller fan has got to see this. It's soooooooo good.
Thou shall not steal...
The formula isn't knew but when it's well done it still works. Such is the case of "Unlawful Entry", an interesting and compelling thriller which isn't the best in its genre but it doesn't disappoint either. Michael Carr (Kurt Russell) is in the nightclub development business and is that kind of person who's used to get everything he desires, easily. That's the way he perhaps got his wife, Karen (Madeleine Stowe), who used to work as a waitress in one of Michael's previous clubs and now teaches young kids.
Everything was going just nice until one day their house is broken into and the cops who came for the aftermath should never have come there in the first place, for the sake of this young couple. Ray Liotta is perfect for the role of a deranged cop who is obsessed with something's he shouldn't long for. And Russell does a good job of being the man in the middle. Stowe is hot as hell in this movie which perhaps helps the viewer understand Liotta's point of view.
The protector turned predator is, like I said before, nothing new on the screen but Liotta can take it to the next level. There are hints of "Fatal Atraction" and "Cape Fear" sprinkled throughout and I mean that as a compliment, not a complaint. "Unlawful Entry" is entertaining, not overlong and I had the feeling of time well spent when I got to the end of it. Just don't expect many twists, turns and surprises, alright?
Desire, Passion, Lust... It's A Deadly Game Of Obsession!
1992... that was a year full of detective heroes. Batman Returns, Basic Instinct, Passenger 57, Patriot Games, and Under Siege... all hold their perfection! What makes Unlawful Entry better than all of these movies above? Its cop detective, the one hero that you would trust as a friend... is about to become your closest enemy.
Ray Liotta... every actor has to attempt to be a bad guy at least once, and if Liotta wasn't bad enough in his other movies... watch him now. What can I say that people don't know about Liotta already. Well, he was an excellent ex-boyfriend ex-con in the movie, Something Wild(Jeff Daniels). Unlawful Entry I'd say was his second best movie, right behind the masterpiece Goodfellas(Robert De Niro).
Kurt Russell... another movie to his long trend line of hits. Russell has done it all, he's did horror(The Thing), comedy(Used Cars, Overboard), action(Executive Decision), drama(Backdraft,Breakdown)... and all of his talent shows in Unlawful Entry, as the protective loving husband. I can't wait to see him in the Poseidon Adventure remake next year.
Madeleine Stowe... she definitely has sex appeal, and beauty going on in this film. You get a good look at her in other movies like Stakeout(Richard Dreyfuss), and The General's Daughter(John Travolta). I don't blame Ray Liotta going crazy for her, playing the attractive wife to Kurt Russell.
If you really want to see something scary, what a cop can do without a care in the world. If you want to be taught a lesson of what it could be like after bringing that new best friend into your life. Watch Unlawful Entry... you get police brutality, you get a nail biter, and a very rare excellent thriller. Unlawful Entry is one thriller, that'll forever go down as a classic in my books!
Tautly directed and superbly photographed, this crowd-pleasing thriller from 1997 is indebted to Steven Spielberg's Duel, but more closely resembles Dead Calm in its strengths and weaknesses. Kurt Russell plays a stressed-out husband whose wife (Kathleen Quinlan) disappears after their car breaks down in the desert. Tracking her whereabouts leads to an interstate theft and kidnapping ring, and as Russell pursues--and is pursued by--a vicious redneck played to perfection by J.T. Walsh (in one of his final film roles), the movie succumbs to several tense, but utterly conventional action sequences. That doesn't stop the movie from being an above-average nail-biter. It is so effectively directed by co-writer Jonathan Mostow that even the more surreal situations seem plausible... More Info about this DVD Actor(s): Kurt Russell - J.T. A potboiler featuring a demented caretaker and a seemingly hapless suburban family, this is The Nanny of the 1990s. However, it is much more predictable than that 1965 Bette Davis psychodrama, and more graphic. It works only because Rebecca De Mornay makes us intensely uncomfortable as the disturbed au pair who wants to take care of much more than her employer's well-being.
Annabella Sciorra plays the perfect mother of a flawless family. Her obstetrician, however, is less than wonderful, having enjoyed her examination much more than he should have. When she files sexual harassment charges against the repugnant doctor, he loses face--literally--after shooting himself in the head. Several months later, an ideal nanny shows up at her home. You guessed it--she's the doc's... Ed Harris, Madeline Stowe, and Benicio Del Toro star in this tricky modern noir. Harris plays Kyle Bodine, a police detective with a keen eye for detail and seemingly all the answers. His axiom is that murderers "always screw it up sooner or later," and if you think those words won't come back to haunt him, you don't know your suspense movies. He soon runs into Rachel (Stowe), who is rich, beautiful, and married to an abusive husband. The plot rolls along nicely toward the murder we all know is coming, then gives a few good twists on the way out. Del Toro, not yet famous in this 1991 release, does a terrific more-than-meets-the-eye acting job as Kyle's partner Lamar. This is a fun thriller that hits all the suspense film marks but still manages to keep a few surprises up its sleeve.... This often grisly, arguably racist movie stars Kevin Costner as a U.S. Navy pilot who is the improbable friend of a powerful, vaguely criminal Mexican millionaire (Anthony Quinn). While visiting the latter on his estate, Costner's character has an affair with his host's gorgeous young wife (Madeline Stowe), for which he is almost beaten to death and the wife mutilated and turned into a junkie prostitute (nice, eh?). The hero seeks retaliation, and you may want the same against director Tony Scott, who makes the navy sequences look like beefcake excerpts from his earlier hit film, Top Gun. However, if you can stand the garishness, then perhaps the extreme violence won't be too bothersome, either. But expect a rough time either way. The DVD release offers optional full-screen and... Although the film lasted a bit longer than it should have been, I thought it was OK. I do think however the film would have been a lot more watchable if it hadn't been for Emilio Estevez's god awful weedy little mustache. How long did that take him to grow? A few months? Take it from me sweetie, it doesn't make you less baby-faced, it makes you stupid. And how about Madeleine Stowe? She was certainly the best bit about the movie, and for trivia fans, she also appeared in Little House On The Prairie. Good grief, now how do I know that? :)
I think the poster for this movie, is really fabulous, but corny as hell! I wasn't sure about Richard Dreyfuss, he was OK, but why did they have to make him fall in love with the pretty young lady? Hasn't that been done enough now? And it's...
