  • DVD Spider-Man (Widescreen Special Edition)

For devoted fans and nonfans alike, Spider-Man offers nothing less--and nothing more--than what you'd expect from a superhero blockbuster. Having proven his comic-book savvy with the original Darkman, director Sam Raimi brings ample energy and enthusiasm to Spidey's origin story, nicely establishing high-school nebbish Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) as a brainy outcast who reacts with appropriate euphoria--and well-tempered maturity--when a "super-spider" bite transforms him into the amazingly agile, web-shooting Spider-Man. That's all well and good, and so is Kirsten Dunst as Parker's girl-next-door sweetheart. Where Spider-Man falls short is in its hyperactive CGI action sequences, which play like a video game instead of the gravity-defying exploits of a flesh-and-blood superhero. Willem Dafoe is perfectly cast as Spidey's schizoid nemesis, the Green Goblin, and the movie's a lot of fun overall. It's no match for Superman and Batman in bringing a beloved character to the screen, but it places a respectable third. --Jeff Shannon

    A Dissenting Opinion!

The visual effects in this movie were really dreadful, comparable to a cheap video game-- I can't understand why so many people were impressed by them. Spiderman moves like a puppet, the Green Goblin looks like some ridiculous power-ranger... they should have tried to do a little bit less with CGI figures, and shot more of the action with dancers or acrobats. Also, I can't understand why they put that raised plastic ribbing on Spiderman's costume; it looks awful and it is unfathomable how a broke teenager could make such a thing. Killing the Green Goblin was a bad dramatic choice-- in the original comic book series Norman Osborn remained alive, alternating between amnesia and psychosis. This situation put Peter Parker in a state of perpetual anxiety and moral conflict and created great suspense in the storyline; one never knew when Osborn would slip into his mania again.

In spite of these problems, I liked the melodramatic aspects of the film a lot. The actors were likeable and the story was touching and well-told. It seemed strange that in a film like this the action scenes ended up being the weakest elements!

    Spider-Man (Widescreen Special Edition)

Spider-Man (Widescreen Special Edition)~ Tobey Maguire is a brilliant super hero movie. Sam Raimi has written a stupendous script and picked the right actors to be in it. Tobey Maguire is brilliant in the role of Spider-man and Defoe is sublime in the role of the Goblin. Kirsten Dunst is so cute and adorable and the perfect love interest for spider-man. The special effects are well made and I must say that I was very surprised by the overall quality of the movie. Great music, well written dialog and action scenes that were action packed and not overly violent. I highly recommend this movie and give it 5 stars. I can not wait to watch part 2.

With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility...

I was hoping they would come out with Spider-Man on the big screen. I am a big superhero fan. Well, the movie eventually did come out and I saw it in the theater. It did not fall short. Character development was right on. You really get the picture that Peter Parker is struggling through life, and then gets these amazing powers that transform his life but do not remove hardship. With his new powers, he has the added burden to carry. A crime-fighting superhero is born. Start here, then see Spider-Man 2. The story continues...

Spider-Man 2 (Widescreen Special Edition) DVD

More than a few critics hailed Spider-Man 2 as "the best superhero movie ever," and there's no compelling reason to argue--thanks to a bigger budget, better special effects, and a dynamic, character-driven plot, it's a notch above Spider-Man in terms of emotional depth and rich comic-book sensibility. Ordinary People Oscar-winner Alvin Sargent received screenplay credit, and celebrated author and comic-book expert Michael Chabon worked on the story, but it's director Sam Raimi's affinity for the material that brings Spidey 2 to vivid life. When a fusion experiment goes terribly wrong, a brilliant physicist (Alfred Molina) is turned into Spidey's newest nemesis, the deranged, mechanically tentacled "Doctor Octopus," obsessed with completing his experiment and... Shrek 2 (Widescreen Edition) DVD

The lovably ugly green ogre returns with his green bride and furry, hooved friend in Shrek 2. The newlywed Shrek and Princess Fiona are invited to Fiona's former kingdom, Far Far Away, to have the marriage blessed by Fiona's parents--which Shrek thinks is a bad, bad idea, and he's proved right: The parents are horrified by their daughter's transformation into an ogress, a fairy godmother wants her son Prince Charming to win Fiona, and a feline assassin is hired to get Shrek out of the way. The computer animation is more detailed than ever, but it's the acting that make the comedy work--in addition to the return of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz, Shrek 2 features the flexible voices of Julie Andrews (Mary Poppins), John Cleese (Monty Python's Flying... Hulk (Widescreen Special Edition) DVD

When the Hulk gets angry, his movie gets good, so you wish he'd get angry more often. Accepting this challenge after the triumphant Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, director Ang Lee has created an ambitious film, based on the Marvel comic created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, that succeeds as a cautionary tale about mad science and traumatized children coping with legacies of pain. That's the Hulk's problem: After accidental exposure to gamma radiation, scientist Bruce Banner (Eric Bana) turns into the huge, green, and indestructible Hulk when provoked, and repressed childhood memories fuel his fury. Hobbled by the obligatory "origin story" (to acquaint neophytes with the character's Jekyll-and-Hyde-ish fate), there's room for little else in a sluggish film that struggles to reconcile...
