  • DVD Wings of Desire

"There are angels over the streets of Berlin," quotes the movie poster, but these are like no angels you've ever seen. Bundled in dark overcoats, they watch over the city with ears open to the heartbeat of the human soul, listening to the internal musings and yearnings of earthbound humans like existential detectives. In these delicate, astounding scenes we float through the thoughts of dozens Berlin citizens, from the weary and worn to the hopeful and young, as the angels record the magic moments for some heavenly record. But when Damiel (the empathic and sensitive Bruno Ganz) falls in love with an angel of another sort, the lonely trapeze artist Marion (willowy, sad-eyed Solveig Dommartin), he gives up the contemplation and observation of life to experience it himself.

Wim Wenders's most purely romantic film is like poetry on celluloid, a celebration of the transient and fragile moments of being human: the warmth of a cup of coffee on a cold day, the embrace of a friend, the touch of a lover, the rapture of love. Opening with an angel's-eye view of Berlin in silvery black and white (delicately captured by the great cinematographer Henri Alekan, who photographed Jean Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast 40 years earlier), it transforms into a gauzy color world when Damiel "crosses over" by sheer will. Peter Falk plays himself as a fallen angel with a special sensitivity for celestial visitors ("I can't see you, but I know you're there," he proclaims), and Otto Sander, whose smiling eyes brighten a face etched by eons of waiting and watching, is Damiel's partner. Wenders made a sequel in 1993, Faraway, So Close, and Hollywood remade the film as City of Angels with Nicolas Cage and Meg Ryan. --Sean Axmaker

    Review(s): DVD Wings of Desire
    Trying: too, too trying

If you're in a vacant or a pensive mood, you might find that this will match it. Two tidy middle-aged angels meander around Berlin, dressed in their everyday clothes. They wear ponytail haircuts and no-one can see them, but otherwise they're just like all the other citizens. If you get up to make a cup of tea or go to the bathroom while viewing this film, don't worry, you won't have missed anything crucial. Yes, it's possible to immerse oneself in the existential and semi-surreal ambience, but there's a permanent nagging question: why bother? The other nagging question is how did this film ever get made ? I mean what exactly grabbed someone enough to fork out the dosh to do it? A third question is: What is Life? Who knows, who knows. I'm not knocking it: more power to Wim for the luxury of indulging himself in this manner. Maybe I'll try again in about six months time. If at first you don't succeed, etc etc.

I ride upon the wings of desire.

This is not just a film, it's a poem of man's ways, we ride upon it's wings like the wieghtless wind, it's beauty caresses our eyes, Wim Wenders masterpiece without a question, this is his film, this is the film that released his soul from the flesh, sure his other films are their own works of art, but WINGS OF DESIRE is his masterpiece, I love so many films that all my reviews seem a bit repetitive. But if you love art films and poetry, this is your film.

    Necessary

It's the kind of story I think we need to know this days. I've read an analysis about it, years ago, which can resume very well what is behind this master piece, but you'll need to see "Faraway, So Close" too if you are really aimed to undestand. So, taking both films in account, they are about good reasons for an angel to become human beings: love by a special person or a irrestible necessity to protect the good feellings humans are still capable to heve.

    Paris, Texas DVD

Something like a perfect artistic union is achieved in the major components of Paris, Texas: the twang of Ry Cooder's guitar, the lonely light of Robbie Muller's camera, the craggy landscape of Harry Dean Stanton's face. In his greatest role, longtime character actor Stanton plays a man brought back to his old life after wandering in the desert (or somewhere) for four years. He has a 7-year-old son to get to know, and his wife has gone missing. The material is much in the wanderlust spirit of director Wim Wenders, working from a script by Sam Shepard and L.M. Kit Carson. If the long climactic conversation between Stanton and Nastassja Kinski renders the movie uneven and slightly inscrutable, it's hard to think of a more fitting ending--and besides, the achingly empty American... Three Colors Trilogy (Blue / White / Red) DVD

Even though one can view each segment of Krzysztof Kieslowski's Three Colors trilogy on its own, it seems absurd to do so; why buy the slacks instead of the entire suit? Created by Kieslowski and his writing partner Krzysztof Piesiewicz for France's bicentennial, the titles--and the themes of the films--come from the three colors of the French flag representing liberty, equality, and fraternity. Blue examines liberation through the eyes of a woman (Juliette Binoche) who loses her husband and daughter in an auto accident, and solemnly starts anew. White is an ironic comedy about a befuddled Polish husband (Zbigniew Zamachowski) who takes an odd path of revenge against his ex-wife (Julie Delpy). A Swiss model (Irène Jacob) strikes up a friendship with a retired... More Info about this DVD

    Run Lola Run DVD

It's difficult to create a film that's fast paced, exciting, and aesthetically appealing without diluting its dialogue. Run Lola Run, directed and written by Tom Tykwer, is an enchanting balance of pace and narrative, creating a universal parable that leaps over cultural barriers. This is the story of young Lola (Franka Potente) and her boyfriend Manni (Moritz Bleibtreu). In the space of 20 minutes, they must come up with 100,000 deutsche marks to pay back a seedy gangster, who will be less than forgiving when he finds out that Manni incompetently lost his cash to an opportunistic vagrant. Lola, confronted with one obstacle after another, rides an emotional roller coaster in her high-speed efforts to help the hapless Manni--attempting to extract the cash first from her...
