DVD Yankee Doodle Dandy (Two-Disc Special Edition)
James Cagney thrills in a rare (and limber) song-and-dance performance as composer-entertainer George M. Cohan. This nostalgic biography is told in flashbacks, covering Cohan's formative years becoming Broadway's brightest star and touching upon his loves, musicals, and artistic triumphs. Director Michael Curtiz (The Adventures of Robin Hood) offers Cagney ample opportunities to invent an utterly charming performance in what is practically a one-man show. If you've never seen Cagney as a hoofer, you're in for a treat: his dancing is as dynamic as anything else he's ever done on screen. --Tom Keogh

Peck's Bad Boy
It's got energy to spare, and Cagney is a dynamo as the song and dance man George M. Cohan. The ending is heavy on the flag-waving, but after all it was 1942 and the war was on. There are other overly sentimental scenes, but in this biographical movie that is more the fault of Cohan than it is of the picture.
Cagney can't sing worth a lick, but he can dance, even if he does look like Rocco doing a buck and wing. His presence on the screen is like a tornado on a Kansas landscape. Walter Huston is a real standout as Cohan's father. The direction is tight and constantly moves the story forward - it doesn't lag for a second. It's one of the best up-beat movies ever made. I remember it being show frequently on TV (at least in the NYC area) during the 1950s-60s, and everytime I watched it, it knocked me out. (I loved trying to duplicate Cagney's dance bit that he does on the walls, to my mother's great annoyance.) Definitely worth a watch.

This DVD is just fantastic..a thoroughly good Sunday movie, inspirational, well acted and some of the best dance routines ever seen on a movie. Jimmy Cagney is a surprise package, a wonderful dancer and perfect for this role. This film was great in everyway, great performances, great storey and a musical as well. The best!!
Yankee Doodle Dandy
In my opinion this was James Cagney's best role as an actor, and that is saying something thinking about all the classic movies he stared in. This movie not only showed what a great actor Cagney was but he sings and dances into your heart as George M. Cohan. Absolutely a truly great movie!

Decades before the Hollywood film industry became famous for megabudget disaster and science fiction spectaculars, the studios of Southern California (and particularly Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer) were renowned for a uniquely American (and nearly extinct) kind of picture known as The Musical. Indeed, when the prestigious British film magazine Sight & Sound conducts its international critics poll in the second year of every decade, this 1952 MGM picture is the American musical that consistently ranks among the 10 best movies ever made. It's not only a great song-and-dance piece starring Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor, and a sprightly Debbie Reynolds; it's also an affectionately funny insider spoof about the film industry's uneasy transition from silent pictures to "talkies." Kelly plays... More Info about this DVD Actor(s): Donald O'Connor - Debbie Reynolds Director(s): Stanley Donen DVD Release Date: Released the 24 September 2002 Usually ships in 24 hours

One of the finest American musicals, this 1944 film by Vincente Minnelli is an intentionally self-contained story set in 1903, in which a happy St. Louis family is shaken to their roots by the prospect of moving to New York, where the father has a better job pending. Judy Garland heads the cast in what amounts to a splendid, end-of-an-era story that nicely rhymes with the onset of the 20th century. The film is extraordinarily alive, the characters strong, and the musical numbers are so splendidly part of the storytelling that you don't feel the film has stopped for an interlude. --Tom KeoghMore Info about this DVD Director(s): Vincente Minnelli - Alan D. A musical biopic of Al Jolson which stars Larry Parks. Parks got an Oscar nomination as did William Demarest who plays Jolson's mentor. Parks is excellent as Jolson. He has a real sense of enthusiasm and his eyes are expressive. You can see why he became a legendary entertainer. Jolson was the star of The Jazz Singer, the first "talkie." The black face is disturbing, but it was a popular form of entertainment. You hear Jolson's singing of hits like Mammy.
One of the main selling points of the movie is not only Parks performance but the all of the scenes that led to Jolson becoming an entertainer. You see scenes from his youth and his family life. The actor who portrays the young Jolson is very good.
For a knock-out combination of timeless entertainment and vintage studio history, you can't do much better than The Warner Brothers Gangsters Collection. In the 1930s and '40s, Paramount specialized in glossy comedies, MGM popularized lavish musicals, Universal produced signature horror classics, and Fox scored hits with sophisticated dramas. But it was Warner Bros. that generated controversy--if not always box-office profits--with so-called "social problem" films, and that meant gangsters. When viewed in their pre- and post-Prohibition context and in chronological order (Little Caesar and The Public Enemy, 1931; The Petrified Forest, 1936; Angels With Dirty Faces, 1938; The Roaring Twenties, 1939; White Heat, 1949), these six films... James Stewart, at his warmest and most avuncular, plays the bandleader who rocketed to fame during the swing era. The Glenn Miller Story may be a whitewashed version of Miller's life, but it certainly is a pleasant example of the feel-good Hollywood biopic, with the usual conventions: early struggles, loyal wife (June Allyson at her chirpiest), personal sacrifice--Miller joins the Army when war breaks out, although he doesn't have to--and ultimate tragedy. All the Glenn Miller classics filling the soundtrack make the film pretty easy to take, too: "Moonlight Serenade," "A String of Pearls," "Chattanooga Choo-Choo." Miller plays the great "In the Mood" with his military band during a World War II air-raid warning. Pure corn, but it works. Director Anthony Mann, better known for his...
