From the Rolling Stones on a boombox to Elvis Presley singing "Rubberneckin'" on a TV, Vice's cutting-edge soundtrack has been preserved and honed in 5.1 surround sound glory.
Miami Vice made stars out of Don Johnson, Philip Michael Thomas, and Edward James Olmos, who won an Emmy as the intense, taciturn Lt. Castillo (watching him bust some martial arts moves in "Golden Triangle" is like Yoda cutting lose in Attack of the Clones), but the first season also offers time-capsule glimpses of actors on the cusp of stardom, including a pre-L.A. Law Jimmy Smits in the pilot, a pre-Crime Story Dennis Farina in "One-Eyed Jack," and a pre-Moonlighting Bruce Willis in "No Exit." Miami Vice put a neon sheen on cop-show convention. Its fashion sense (pastel suits, no belt, no socks), and the brilliantly employed freeze frames are still arresting. I got season 1 as soon as it was out (and yes, 20 years was WAY too long to wait!!!).
Unfortunately, the plastic interior of the sleeves was such that I cracked disk 1 trying to get it out to play it. Fortunately, the crack doesn't interfere with playing the DVD - it didn't extend into the recorded section, but I did resort to carefully removing the rest of the disks from the very attractive sleeves and putting them in empty CD jewel cases I had on hand.
Needless to say I was VERY UNHAPPY, but overjoyed to finally be able to see my favorite show again.
My review subtracts one star for packaging problems. Hope they do better when season 2 comes out.
The Dreamland.
When Sonny wants to call his ex wife just for minutes before dangerous action, he goes to the phone box and puts in 25 cents, instead of calling her from a mob. I think that's why we like it. The 80's. I was born in 1983. When the first season had place I was one year old. But although I don't remember these times I miss 'em. That's the thing that make the 80's so powerfull. Even if You weren't there you miss 'em. They are just perfect and that's what is shown in Miami Vice. W omen; C ars; S tyle; M usic; C olors!!!!!!!! That's what I live for.
Stunning
I was a big fan of Miami Vice back in the day. It's actually even better watching it the second time. All the great memories come flooding back. The people, the palms, the pastels, priceless. Watching it today gives you more perspective to the impact this show had on everything from pop culture in the 80's, to modern day entertainment.
Like all of you that are waiting for the release of the MIAMI VICE: SEASON TWO DVD, I'm very excited about it.
P.S. To reply to Vincent's review of the DVD set, the episode where in one scene Crockett's black car gets blown to smithereens is "When Irish Eyes are Crying". Glamorous Maddie Hayes (Cybill Shepherd) is an ex-model with a problem--her accountant just ran off with her money. Granted, he did leave her with a few broken-down businesses. One happens to be a detective agency run by charming loudmouth David Addison (Bruce Willis).
