  • DVD Eddie Murphy Raw

The audacious concert film Eddie Murphy Raw rubbed some people the wrong way upon its release in 1987, but there's no denying that between Murphy's more insensitive bits about women and gay men is some of his most inspired material. While the young comedian indulges an unattractive homophobia and rants about the sexual manipulativeness of all females, he makes up for it with an amazing story about being chided by Bill Cosby for obscene humor and does a great impression of Mr. T falling under the spell of a Jedi mind trick. The best stuff comes deep into the show, particularly a long tale of being pressured into a fight at a club, resulting in a phone call to Murphy's drunk father, the latter in the middle of a verbal attack on his wife. The scene is genuinely horrifying and funny, testament to Murphy's early reputation as heir to Richard Pryor's mercilessly autobiographical brilliance. --Tom Keogh

Top-Notch Impersonations, But Dead & Tired Routines

I really like Eddie Murphy's work. When I saw this DVD at the store for a very low price, I was psyched: a ninety-minute stand-up routine from one of my favorite SNL graduates. What could go wrong? Apparently, quite a bit. Eddie begins with some absolutely fantastic (and I mean "fantastic") impersonations of Mr. T., Bill Cosby, and Richard Pryor. But, then he began to work into his routine, a somewhat bitter rant about women, divorce, and cheating, and I got worried. After watching only thirty minutes of the movie, I was already looking at the watch and waiting to make dinner.

I agree with a few of the other reviewers (though, our numbers seem small) who say that his jokes get repetitive and old after a while. They do. Eddie seems to be beating a dead horse in this routine. If I had gone to the show, I would have felt cheated. Rather than explore a diverse amount of material, Eddie pours himself into one topic and never lets up. The only bright points in his whole routine are his impersonations.

I don't know what to say: I'll have to check out DELIRIOUS and see if he gives us a better show on that one. But for those of you interested in looking for a great stand-up performance, I'd go elsewhere.

Eddie Murphy's comedy was never politically correct

    which made it so funny.

I watched this on cable in 1990 and, at 14 years old, I didn't get too offended at the majority of the stuff he joked about. (It's because of the over political correctness that has run amok in this country since the '80's that people are hypersensitive today. But, for the p.c. mindset about being careful not to offend anyone, people are more prejudiced today than they were in 1987.)

Catching this on cable tonight, I appreciate "Raw" now at nearly 30 more than I did as a teenager. I caught on to the more subtle stuff that slips you by as a teen and I found it more hilarious as a result.

In many ways, what Murphy said then still rings true nearly 20 years later (although I didn't like the anti-gay bit, that material wasn't nearly as mean-spirited as the majority of the stuff that has come out since then. Murphy's was tame by today's "standards").

The title says it all: This is Eddie Murphy "Raw." He's a lot more entertaining than alot of "comedians" today, that's for sure.

    Essential video, for sure.

Saturday Night Live - The Best of Eddie Murphy (Bonus Edition) DVD

Perhaps one of the greatest lights ever to shine on late-night television, Eddie Murphy has gone on to well-deserved international superstardom. Check out his earliest television work on Saturday Night Live: The Best of Eddie Murphy, a collection of his greatest roles, from Gumby to Stevie Wonder to Buckwheat. Of course, some would argue that his best role was as himself, and there is plenty of evidence for that--many of the skits feature Murphy au naturel and the opening sequence is taken from his monologue when he returned to the show triumphantly after leaving for Hollywood. Exploring the world around him and finding laughs everywhere, Murphy can take a simple idea (such as the "James Brown Hot Tub Party") and run wild with it, leaving the audience hysterically begging for... Richard Pryor: Live in Concert DVD

Watching Pryor go from imitating a drinking deer to a woman debating about going in the woods gives just a hint of the comedic genius of the man. Crude, foul, and real, this is the first and best of his concert films. Pryor does dead-on impersonations of the respective races, cussing, trying to act tough, getting kicked in personal spots. But it's his imagination that elevates him to a different level. He gives his impressions of what animals think, from his own animals (a monkey, a Doberman) to police dogs, and it seems so exact, so prescient. Not to mention the fact that he is self-deprecating in the extreme, and has as much fun skewering himself as any other subject. Still vibrant, still funny. --Keith Simanton More Info about this DVD

Richard Pryor has influenced scores and scores of comedians and theres a good reason why....because hes one of the greats!!! This show which was filmed in Vegas is truly his finest hour. Taped after his infamous freebasing incident, he touches on his cocaine addiction....and as brutal as it was he makes it funny. Also, he talks about gangsters he used to work with and them telling murder stories!! No comedian would dare touch on things like this, and to make these things funny takes TALENT. Of which Pryor has an abundance of.

Chris Rock - Bigger and Blacker DVD

Comedian Chris Rock makes a raucous return to his stand-up roots in this HBO special filmed at Harlem's legendary Apollo Theater. Despite his manic and profane delivery, Rock's comedy is often rooted in traditional subjects for comedians: family relationships, misunderstandings between men and women, and observations on how childhood has changed. But he takes his material right to the edge, proving himself to be a sharp-eyed satirist. Serious and timely issues, such as school shootings or children being neglected by partying parents, are tackled by Rock, who's not afraid to slip in a serious point while being hysterically funny. His defense of President Clinton against his accusers is a good example of how Rock's material is almost always bound to offend someone: he slices through the... More Info about this DVD
