DVD Woman Thou Art Loosed
Woman Thou Art Loosed is a powerful, tragic feature film adaptation of the bestselling, inspirational book of the same name by Dallas-based minister T.D. Jakes. Jakes plays himself in this fictional movie (which is derived from his work with women seeking guidance after experiences of abuse), lending his golden presence in a story about a death row inmate, Michelle (Kimberly Elise), whose childhood rape by her clueless mother's boyfriend leads to one catastrophe after another. Elise is very good in a difficult part, her character deeply cynical and seemingly beyond the reach of love, yet still human. The rest of the cast is also very fine: Loretta Devine as the ever-in-denial mom, Michael Boatman as a childhood friend who recalls Michelle's innocence, and Sean Blakemore as a criminal trying to steal the doomed heroine's soul. Veteran television director Michael Schultz ably guides the drama toward its quiet, unforgettable ending. --Tom Keogh
My own walk with God has been....unsteady and unfruitful. I didn't go to the lengths of killing the one I hated, as the character did in this story, but, I know that feeling of hopelessness, of doing the same thing over and over, even after mercy.
It really stirred me up, knowing that this happens in real life, that little girls are raped and molested, and their mothers don't protect them. Makes your blood boil. I loved the vinettes each of the characters gave, which helped me get the story from their perspective. So, when the mother gave hers, I felt so much emotion of discust. Yet, she reasoned it like this: I didn't deny it all for either of them, but for me. It was a selfish thing, cause I don't want to be alone. That's still rotton, but the truth.
Anyway, this is one of the better movies of redemption/christian faith I have seen. So much better than that corny "Lilies of the Field" I saw recently. It's worth being in your Christian DVD collection.

Good but not as good as it could've been
This movie was disappointing in many ways. I wish I could give it 5 stars but then I would not be honest.
The acting was superb. Kimberly Elise is awesome as always. She is one of the best talents in Hollywood.
Clifton Powell played a villian who was terrifying.
And Loretta Devine, made me believe and even feel sorry for the mother as wrong as I thought she was.
However I feel this movie focused too much on Bishop Jakes and his ministry. There were too many scenes of him preaching and his choir singing.
Especially considering none of it had a positive affect on the outcome of the story.
Few movies are made with the personal fervor of Diary of a Mad Black Woman. When Helen (Kimberly Elise, Beloved) is literally thrown out of her house by her callous lawyer husband (Steve Harris), her sense of self unravels. She finds herself on the doorstep of her gun-toting grandmother Madea (cross-dressed Tyler Perry), who sets Helen on the road to dignity and forgiveness--with a few detours along the way. The plot of Diary of a Mad Black Woman unfolds in a dizzying melange of styles, from soap opera to campy comedy to chick-flick romance to gothic revenge to inspirational tale of redemption. Perry, like Eddie Murphy in The Nutty Professor, plays multiple roles in a family, two of which are over-the-top scenery-chewers while the other is a sincere, generous... Jamie Foxx's uncannily accurate performance isn't the only good thing about Ray. Riding high on a wave of Oscar buzz, Foxx proved himself worthy of all the hype by portraying blind R&B legend Ray Charles in a warts-and-all performance that Charles approved shortly before his death in June 2004. Despite a few dramatic embellishments of actual incidents (such as the suggestion that the accidental drowning of Charles's younger brother caused all the inner demons that Charles would battle into adulthood), the film does a remarkable job of summarizing Charles's strengths as a musical innovator and his weaknesses as a philandering heroin addict who recorded some of his best songs while flying high as a kite. Foxx seems to be channeling Charles himself, and as he did with the life of... The moment the six-foot-tall, chain-smoking, gun-toting grandmother Madea walks on stage, it's clear that her creator, Tyler Perry, is a man who knows and appreciates his audience. Perry is the writer/director/star of the surprise hit Diary of a Mad Black Woman; like that movie, the stage play I Can Do Bad All By Myself mixes melodrama, gospel music, and freewheeling improvisational comedy--all the more loose and rambunctious because it was recorded live. In I Can Do Bad All By Myself, Madea's two granddaughters grapple with man trouble: One sister is now engaged to the other's husband, while the other resists the attentions of an ex-con with good intentions. While this angst unfolds, the heavy emotions are punctuated by rousing gospel singing and Madea's barbed,... Solidly built around a subtle yet commanding performance by Don Cheadle, Hotel Rwanda emerged as one of the most highly-praised dramas of 2004. In a role that demands his quietly riveting presence in nearly every scene, Cheadle plays real-life hero Paul Rusesabagina, a hotel manager in the Rwandan capital of Kigali who in 1994 saved 1,200 Rwandan "guests" from certain death during the genocidal clash between tribal Hutus, who slaughtered a million victims, and the horrified Tutsis, who found safe haven or died. Giving his best performance since his breakthrough role in Devil in a Blue Dress, Cheadle plays Rusesabagina as he really was during the ensuing chaos: "an expert in situational ethics" (as described by critic Roger Ebert), doing what he morally had to do, at...
