DVD The Muppets' Wizard of Oz
There were good intentions in this Muppets adaptation of L. Frank Baums classic Emerald City story of Dorothys journey to see the Wizard with hopes of fulfilling her dream of stardom: the film is a nostalgic nod to the original 1979 Muppet Movie, where Kermit leaves the swamps for Hollywood to become a star, picking up some friends along the way. Grammy winner Ashanti plays Dorothy Gale, an aspiring singer who serves meatloaf to truckers and lives in a Kansas trailer park with her Aunt Em (Queen Latifah). In the ensuing chaos of a giant tornado, she gets dumped in the Land of Ozalong with her pet shrimp, Toto (Pepe the Prawn). Dorothy soon meets the familiar Scarecrow, Tin man, and Lion (Kermit, Gonzo, and Fozzie, respectively) and together they journey to see the Wizard (voiced by Jeffrey Tambor) who promises to grant her celebrity wish if first she defeats the Wicked Witch of the West (Miss Piggy). While the Muppets have survived a few cinematic flops before, this film is bereft of all they represent--the endearing innocence, engaging silliness, and cagey humor of Jim Hensons legendary variety series. Instead, a mean-spirited cynicism with sexual subtext prevails that is not only unfunny, but also mildly offensive. In a desire to appear edgy and culturally relevant by the filmmakers (and executive producers Brian and Lisa Henson), the timeless spirit of the vintage Muppets is missing, as are the signature voiceovers by Frank Oz and Brian Henson. Onscreen chemistry between actors and Muppets feels contrived, not to mention Quentin Tarantinos bizarre cameo. When Kermit delivers a religious joke of questionable taste, viewers might yearn for the swamp years, when Kermit the frog and the Henson Company could do no wrong. (Ages 4 and older) --Lynn Gibson
Got one star only because there is not lesser an option
This movie was absolutely horrible. I was horrified at some of the humor in this movie. The constant referral to themselves as "sexy", the put downs and critisism's of the the tasks of some of the characters is not good for a child. A comment by dorothy when putting on her shoes."if these shoes are supposed to make you feel confident and sexy, it worked" Just crap. Kids have enough to deal with. This was pushing it. There was a scene with gonzo and pepe that involved "nipples" A comment of "looking for a good hometown girl" then comparing that home town girl to "girls gone wild" was totally inappropriate. And how about the comments about a "cold dead carcus" There is a lot of underlying humor in it that is not appropriate for children. Many sexual comments and behaviors. I grew up watching muppets and am very disappointed in this one. I am now fighting with walmart, where I bought it, To return it, Apprarently they do not accept returns on open electronics. It is a total waste of money. I can not explain how disappointed and angry I am about this. No child should be able to watch this movie. I never knew that puppets had cleavage until now.
some of the twist in the story, this one from the original is clever, but most is not welcomed. The poppyfields bar, where they pass out from "poppy's", well, we could of done without this movie
ADULT THEMES NOT WELCOMED by this Muppet/Disney fan
A gigantic Muppet & Disney fan am I, having grown up as a kid watching everything in the Muppet world. I was very excited to get to see Disney's first Muppet production after taking ownership of Jim Henson, but was very disappointed in the result.
#1. My jaw dropped when I heard one of the Muppets (either Rizzo or Bean) drop a remark about Girls Gone Wild - it dropped again when Kermit made reference to the few girls he'd "had" that were "pretty good" - & I was less shocked, but still questioning the necessity of the subject of "nipples" being brought up between Pepe & Gonzo. Why would any parent who actually CARES what their child puts in their mind want to allow this kind of humor to go unchecked? I wouldn't want a child of mine watching it. I think the jokes for this script must have been brainstormed up at some late-night drunken pow-wow at a Southern California bar.
#2. Suggestive attire being worn by Miss Piggy to the point of indecency - So unworthy of such a classic family entertainment character of our time.
#3. Muppet headliners robbed of their true character. I must say, especially for Fozzy & Gonzo, that I've never seen such dull parts for them. Why did the filmmakers even bother putting them in the film if they weren't going to be used? Surely, one would assume that some sort of coach would've been on the scene to make sure the characters stayed true to their classic characteristics. You sure can't tell by watching this film.
#4. Music = dull & pales GREATLY in the shadow of such great muppet tunes as "The Rainbow Connection", "Gonna Be A Movie" & so many many others.
#6. Summary - If you're a Muppet first-timer watching this movie, then you don't know what you're missing. I encourage you to give the other Muppet films a viewing, because if you haven't, then you haven't seen a well-done Muppet production.
#7. The ONLY redeeming quality of this picture = Pepe. Pepe is totally awesome, hilarious, & is one of my new favorite Muppets. I hope to see Pepe back again in lots of future Muppet adventures.
Ugh!
I love the muppets, especially their spoofs off of classic movies and books. THis however, was a disaster and I think it gives the muppets a bad face. The comments and jokes were pretty crude and the acting (Human, that is) was absolutely terrible!
But the thing I was most disappointed about were the songs! I was looking for great renditions of the classics, but go stuck with disasterous mock ups that made little or no sense at all!
Don't buy this shadow of the muppets greatness. Get the classics, like "A muppet's Christmas Carol", or "Muppet Treasure Island". THose are the best by far!
The charm, the zaniness, the corny jokes, the showbiz cliches--every element of The Muppet Show holds up 30 years after Jim Henson's legendary variety series' debut season. Well, perhaps not everything: Today's younger viewers might have a hard time placing some of The Muppet Show's then-guest stars, such as Florence Henderson or Ruth Buzzi. But then, the Show's real celebrities are perennial icons Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Gonzo the... whatever, Fozzie Bear, Animal, and the rest of the Muppets' harried, well-meaning family of entertainers. Season One finds the show pretty much in the basic shape longtime fans will remember: A musical introduction followed by backstage chaos, another musical number, a sketch, a scene with the guest star, and so on. The world of Jim Henson's Fraggle Rock is far from the sunny urban buzz of Sesame Street, where many of Henson's most beloved Muppet characters dwell, or the frantic, backstage shenanigans of The Muppet Show, the classic variety program starring Kermit, Miss Piggy, and other icons of children's television. In Fraggle Rock, humans and Muppets live in different worlds. So different, in fact, that the Fraggles--small but diverse creatures who live in a cavernous land behind a wall in the shop of a tinkerer named Doc (Gerry Parkes)--regard the realm of flesh-and-blood people as "outer space."
Fraggles and people live apart, but the order of things is shaken up when the series' central character, Gobo, can't talk his determined uncle, Traveling Matt, from being... More Info about this DVD DVD Release Date: Released the 06 September 2005 Usually ships in 24 hours

The delightful designs of William Joyce (writer/illustrator of such popular children's books as George Shrinks and Bently & Egg) make Robots a joy to behold. The round, bouncy, and ramshackle forms of hero Rodney Copperbottom and his computer-animated friends are part of an ornate and daffy

Kids love this Muppet take on Robert Louis Stevenson's pirate classic, about the pirate Long John Silver (Tim Curry) and his takeover of a ship in order to track down buried treasure. His friend and then nemesis is earnest cabin boy Jim Hawkins (Kevin Bishop), who teams with the captain of the ship (Kermit the Frog) and several shipmates (including Gonzo, Ratso, and Fozzie) to foil Long John's nefarious plot. An odd subplot finds Captain Kermit stopping at a desert island to find his long-lost love (Miss Piggy--who else?). The Muppets have not lost their wild sense of humor, which works on enough levels to amply entertain children and their parents in imaginative fashion. --Marshall FineMore Info about this DVD Actor(s): Tim Curry Director(s): Brian Henson DVD Release Date: Released the 04 June 2002 This item is currently not available.
