DVD Fly Away Home (Special Edition)
There are some filmmaking teams that invariably bring out the best in each other, and that's definitely the case with director Carroll Ballard and cinematographer Caleb Deschanel. They previously collaborated on The Black Stallion and Never Cry Wolf, and Fly Away Home is their third family film that deserves to be called a classic. Inspired by Bill Lishman's autobiography, the movie tells the story of a 13-year-old girl (Anna Paquin) who goes to live with her estranged, eccentric father (Jeff Daniels) following the death of her mother. At first she's withdrawn and reclusive, but finds renewed happiness when she adopts an orphaned flock of baby geese and, later, teaches them to migrate using an ultralight. Sensitively directed and stunningly photographed, the movie has flying sequences that are nothing short of astonishing, and Daniels and Paquin (Oscar winner for The Piano) make a delightful father-daughter duo. --Jeff Shannon
What makes FLY AWAY HOME such a wonderful family film is that it doesn't rely on sentimental or maudlin tearjerking scenes to deliver its powerful message. Rather it asks the audience to join in the flight of these remarkable geese and the determination/courage of a young girl and her father to ensure that these sixteen birds migrate properly. Based on true events, the film benefits from the wise direction of Carroll Ballard (Never Cry Wolf, Black Stallion) and the remarkable cinematography of Caleb Deschanel. Jeff Daniels is very good as the inventor father who is reunited with his estranged daughter (a wonderful Anna Paquin) after her mother is killed in an automobile accident in New Zealand. A sense of down-to-earthiness is provided by Terry Kinney as Daniels' humorous brother who assists in the cause and Emmy winner Dana Delaney as Daniels' current significant other. Without any devastating crises or manipulation, FLY AWAY HOME tells a true story of wonderment and is a marvelous family film.
Fly Away Home
A really great and moving story for all ages. We loved it.
Heartwarming, entertaining family film !
Excellent family film, with comedy and excitement mixed with emotion. The music score of Mark Isham really captures the feelings and moods of the story. Great cinematography
Director Fraser Heston captures the danger and beauty of Alaska in this adventurous family film about two kids who embark on a very personal rescue mission. Former 747 pilot Jake Barnes (Dirk Benedict) moved away from a fast-paced Chicago lifestyle with his two children, Jessie and Sean, after the death of his wife. While daughter Jessie thoroughly enjoys and excels in her new surroundings, son Sean's moodiness and homesickness escalates. One stormy night Jake's small plane crashes during an emergency flight, leaving him stuck on a treacherous cliff with a broken leg and no radio. The local search and rescue team soon gives up, prompting Sean and Jessie to kayak, hike, canoe, and rappel their way over many lush and snowy miles to save their dad.
TONI WHITNEY HAD IT ALL, A FAMILY LOVE NO OTHER KID WOULD EVER DREAM ON HAVING ONLY TO HAVE IT INTERRUPTED BY A BABY SEAL LATER NAMED ANDRE.
THIS SEAL CHANGE THE LIVES OF THE WHOLE FAMILY, EVEN MANAGE TO CONFRONT JELOUSY AMONG THE FAMILY MEMEBER AND NEIGHBORS.
BUT IT ALSO MANAGE TO GIVE TONI THE UNDSTANDING ON HOW AN ANIMAL AS A SEAL COULD GIVE AND RECIVE LOVE FROM HUMAN AND NOT BE AFRAID ANY HUMAN MIGHT HURT THEM.
THIS IS A NICE MOVIE, ACTUALLY A FAMILY MOVIE AND IT ALSO TEACH US A MESSAGE. EVEN THE ENDING IS BREATH TAKING. DONT MISS YOU I KNOW I WONT.
Filmed before (and quite nicely) in 1949, Frances Hodgson Burnett's classic children's story was remade for this admirable 1993 release, executive produced by Francis Ford Coppola and directed by acclaimed Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Holland. Splendidly adapted by Edward Scissorhands screenwriter Caroline Thompson, the film opens in India during the early 1900s, when young Mary Lennox (Kate Maberly) is orphaned and sent to England to live in Misselthwaite Manor, the gloomy estate of her brooding and melancholy uncle, Lord Craven (John Lynch). Because the uncle is almost always away on travels, struggling to forget the death of his beloved wife, Mary is left mostly alone to explore the estate. Eventually she befriends the young brother of a staff maid and Lord Craven's apparently... Adapted from the beloved novel by Walter Farley, this 1979 family classic was hailed by no less than hard-to-please critic Pauline Kael, who wrote that "it may be the greatest children's movie ever made." A visual feast from start to finish, the timeless tale of The Black Stallion plays out on almost mythic terms. A young boy survives a shipwreck and is stranded on a deserted island with a graceful black stallion, with whom the boy develops an almost empathic friendship. After being rescued and returning home, the two make a winning team as jockey and lightning-fast racehorse under the tutelage of a passionate trainer, played by Mickey Rooney in an Oscar-nominated role. From its serenely hypnotic island sequence to the breathtaking race scenes, this delightful film is guaranteed to... Storytelling doesn't get much purer than this--a film with virtually no dialogue and not a minute that isn't fascinating, either for the plot it pursues or the way director Jean-Jacques Annaud gets his ursine stars to do what he wants. The story deals with a young cub who, after his mother is killed in a landslide, bonds to a lumbering male Kodiak. The two of them then must cope with an invasion of hunters into their territory--and Annaud makes it clear whose side he's on. Aside from stunning scenery, the film offers startlingly close-up looks at bear behavior. They say the best actors are the ones that let you see what they're thinking, a trick Annaud manages with his big, furry stars. --Marshall FineMore Info about this DVD Actor(s): Tchéky Karyo Director(s): Jean-Jacques Annaud DVD Release Date: Released the 28 August 2001 Usually ships in 24 hours
