DVD Prancer
A reindeer doesn't have to fly to be magical to someone, and Prancer succeeds, in its unassuming and plainspoken way, to prove that point. This 1989 family film stars Rebecca Harrell as 9-year-old Jessica, a motherless schoolgirl raised (and largely ignored) by her bereaved and embittered father (Sam Elliot), an apple farmer. While Jessica's dad struggles to keep food on the family table, the little heroine worries over the fate of a wounded reindeer she meets and wistfully identifies as a member of Santa's sled crew. The story may sound overly precious, but the film is grittier and more realistic than that. Far more concerned with wobbly family relationships than gilded escapism, Prancer is a rare family film that can entertain without invoking fluffy enchantment. Followed 12 years later by a sequel, Prancer Returns. --Tom Keogh
Prancer is magical. The little girl who plays Jessica is a fabulous little actor. She's real; not precocious and obnoxious like so many children's roles today (the film is from 1989). You feel her angst as she tries to get the various townspeople to believe that she has found Santa's reindeer. The scenery of the film is beautiful. The film's music score is pathetic. Overall, definitely a four out of five stars.

A Most Wonderful Movie
I was reluctant to watch "Prancer". I expected it to be an (another) overly sentimental and unrealistic Christiams movie. I was wrong. "Prancer" is a wonderful picture, and it brings out everything that is right and good about Christmas.
It's the story about a real live reindeer that, for some reason, has strayed far south from its natural habitat. An 8 year old girl (Jessica) happens across him in the woods, and she is convinced that he is Prancer ... one of Santa's reindeer. Later the animal somehow gets wounded and mysteriously turns up at Jessica's home, where her father ... should he ever discover the reindeer there ... would shoot him. Jessica decides to nurse Prancer back to health (in secret) and then return him to Santa in time for his important Christmas Eve trip.
The reindeer has the title role here, but the girl who plays Jessica (Rebecca Harrell) is the star of the movie. She gives a very believable and very touching performance, and, if you have a heart ... no matter how small ... she will find it, take it with her, and put it in the pocket of her winter coat ... the very same pocket where she keeps her ... spare halo.
She is surrounded by some pretty good performers here. Sam Elliott plays her dad, and he is excellent, though a bit scary for the first ... 95% of the movie. Cloris Leachman plays an eccentric old shut-in whose life is touched by the little girl. Abe Vigoda is excellent (in a small part) as the veterinarian, and Michael Constantine (in an even smaller part) plays a department store Santa.
"Prancer" never falls into the "mushy" trap ... which would have been easy to do. Everything is kept realistic and believable, which is likely due to the efforts of the director, John Hancock. The setting is small town America in winter (Vermont maybe?) and everything that is shown to us rings true.
But "Prancer" can legitimately be called a Christmas classic ... a movie that families (and those wishing to have a family) can watch for years to come.
Sleigh bells may not ring briskly for this often-somber sequel to the 1989 hit Prancer, but there is plenty to like about its sympathetic characters and wistful storyline. Ten years after the little heroine of Prancer saved a wounded reindeer that might have been a magical member of Santa's flying herd, a friendless boy named Charlie Hooper (Gavin Fink) clandestinely adopts an orphaned buck in the same Michigan town. Convinced that he also has St. Nick's (apparently ever-wandering) Prancer on his hands, Charlie grows determined to lead the deer back to the North Pole. A finely balanced supporting cast (Jack Palance, John Corbett, Michael O'Keefe) brings some interesting textures to this simple tale of redemption and, hey, kids are bound to love the sight of a baby... Whatever you do, don't confuse this Jack Frost with the 1997 comedic horror flick of the same name (its tagline: "He's chillin... and killin'"). This family film stars Michael Keaton as Jack Frost, an aspiring musician, loving husband, and occasionally absent father. Frost's life is unexpectedly cut short by a car accident, and a year after his death he comes back as--you guessed it--a snowman, to help his family heal (Kelly Preston and Joseph Cross as wife and son Gabby and Charlie, respectively). The sudden death may affect sensitive younger viewers, but by the time Frost returns the movie is more light-hearted, and the film's message is a worthy one. There's an underlying theme that supports independence, and Gabby isn't saddled with a new dude by the film's end. There's also... The producers of the Superman movies took a shot at revitalizing the myth of Santa Claus with this 1985 feature. Unfortunately, the results were much less compelling than the flagship Superman feature, despite a script by one of the latter's key writers (David Newman) and a story structure that is essentially a carbon copy of the Man of Steel's movie. The first half of Santa Claus: The Movie is a ponderous origins tale, in which we learn that Santa was actually a woodcutter saved from certain death by elves and taken to the North Pole to begin life as the chimney-dropping hero of children everywhere. The second half involves a world-class villain (John Lithgow) who recruits an outcast elf (Dudley Moore) in a scheme to sabotage old St. Nick. While it aims to... Grab an econo-pack of tissues, gather your loved ones around a cozy television, and bring on the hot cocoa--it's time for a dose of Christmas spirit. The tender and charming Mary Steenburgen (Parenthood) dons a sour disposition in her role as Ginny Grainger, a woman who finds little joy in life lately--let alone in the impending holiday season. Money is tight, her husband (beautifully downplayed by nice-guy Gary Basaraba) lost his job, and the family must move out of their house. Ginny cannot even bring herself to say, "Merry Christmas," despite her family's enthusiasm about the big day. With help from Ginny's brave and loving daughter (sweetly performed by Elisabeth Harnois) and a Christmas angel named Gideon (Harry Dean Stanton), Ginny undergoes a life-altering... Divorced toy company executive Scott Calvin (Tim Allen of Home Improvement and the Toy Story movies) is pleased to have his son Charlie for Christmas, though the boy himself isn't happy about it. But when Santa Claus accidentally topples off the roof of the house and falls with a thud in the snow, Scott finds himself taking the merry old elf's place and earning new respect in his son's eyes. When the night ends, the reindeer take them to the north pole, and Scott discovers that by donning the fabled red suit, he's inadvertently agreed to become the next Santa Claus. The next morning he wakes up in his own bed and thinks it's all a dream--only Charlie remembers it with crystal clarity. Scott now has to deal with his suspicious ex-wife (Wendy Crewson, Air Force...
