    Highly recommended

Here's a little known gem, which every B-movie fan should see!

    Excellent. Stuart Whitman's BEST FILM.

The added bonus of Stuart Whitman's commentary makes this DVD even more enjoyable. He has an easy going style and let's us in on a few tidbits of his life before and after his 7 year contract with Fox. Highly recommended.

One of Stuart Whitman's best performances. A must see film.

Arguably the best performance of Stuart Whitman's career, one wonders why he didn't win the Oscar for his sensitive portrayal. A film that leaves one thinking long after the closing credits.

    From the Terrace DVD

From the Terrace is one of Paul Newman's lesser-known films, but it's a worthy showcase for the actor's developing screen persona. Like Butterfield 8, this is a slick, prestigious adaptation of a John O'Hara novel, about loose morals and forbidden love among the wealthy elite. Director Mark Robson lacks the mastery of melodrama that Douglas Sirk would've brought to this material, but he's still on target with O'Hara's tale of a prodigal son (Newman) who rejects his late father's steel mill in favor of big-business conquest, only to find his trophy wife (superbly played by Newman's off-screen wife, Joanne Woodward) straying into the arms of her former fiancé, while he falls in love with a socialite (Ina Balin) with whom he's much more compatible. A well-tuned drama of... More Info about this DVD

    The Grapes of Wrath DVD

Ranking No. 21 on the American Film Institute's list of the 100 greatest American films, this 1940 classic is a bit dated in its noble sentimentality, but it remains a luminous example of Hollywood classicism from the peerless director of mythic Americana, John Ford. Adapted by Nunnally Johnson from John Steinbeck's classic novel, the film tells a simple story about Oklahoma farmers leaving the depression-era dustbowl for the promised land of California, but it's the story's emotional resonance and theme of human perseverance that makes the movie so richly and timelessly rewarding. It's all about the humble Joad family's cross-country trek to escape the economic devastation of their ruined farmland, beginning when Tom Joad (Henry Fonda) returns from a four-year prison term to discover... The Blue Gardenia DVD

With its title inspired by the notorious Black Dahlia murder case, The Blue Gardenia throws a twist into the story by making the mystery woman not the victim but the suspect in a lurid murder case. Anne Baxter, playing a virginal blonde with almost breathless innocence, impulsively accepts a blind date after receiving a "Dear Jane" letter from her boyfriend in Korea. Raymond Burr oozes slime as the lothario who plots his seduction with cynical calculation ("For drinks, Polynesian Pearl Divers, and don't spare the rum!") and the naive Baxter is easy prey, until she fights back against his advances with a fireplace poker and stumbles home. Waking up the next morning with the past evening a veritable blank, she discovers herself the prime suspect in a murder case trumpeted into a... More Info about this DVD

    The Snake Pit DVD

I had heard about "The Snake Pit" over the years but never saw it until the other night. I wasn't sure if I'd see a movie with an expose of mental institutions or a considered opinion of the subject. I believe that I got both. All in all, this is a very good movie about a woman with a mental illness and her slow road to recovery. In the process, we see the story of the woman as a child, as a young woman, as an inmate in a mental istitution, etc. The young woman is play with excellence by Olivia de Havilland in an Oscar-nominated role. She had a worthy counterpart in the acting of Leo Glenn as her psychiatrist. There are several other good preformances by other women inmates. There is a husband, played by Mark Stevens, whose patience challenges our belief.

The... More Info about this DVD

    Sorry, Wrong Number DVD

Barbara Stanwyck and Burt Lancaster star in Sorry, Wrong Number, an odd telephonic thriller that starts off with a bang. Stanwyck, playing a shrill invalid, is at home alone and phoning around to find her husband. Thanks to a crossed wire, she overhears a murder plot, but she can barely get anyone to pay attention to her, let alone believe her. The rest of the film is played out in telephone conversations and flashbacks as our increasingly frightened heroine tries to find her husband and unravel the murder. Stanwyck, as always, gives a terrific performance, managing to make her character both unlikeable and compelling at the same time. Lancaster, as her kept husband, is handsome, virile, and trapped all at once. The plot, expanded to a film from a tight, dark little radio play,... More Info about this DVD
