DVD Magnum Force
This first sequel to Dirty Harry was written by a couple of strong voices, writer-directors Michael Cimino (The Deer Hunter) and John Milius (Farewell to the King). But that doesn't mean the film is particularly good. After Don Siegel's ferociously dark style in the first movie, Ted Post's blocky, television-ish direction in Magnum Force is a huge letdown. The story doesn't win any prizes, either. Eastwood's San Francisco detective Harry Callahan (apparently having retrieved his badge after throwing it away at the end of Dirty Harry) takes on a vigilante squad within the city's police force. David Soul is pretty convincing as the major spokesman for these right-wing avengers. Eastwood, on the other hand, had already turned Callahan from fascinating outsider in Siegel's film to purveyor of tough-guy shtick in this one. --Tom Keogh
Having finally seen this movie in its DVD inconvation, I am glad that my initial views and opinions were reinforced.
This is a powerful movie of the insidious and evil corruption of police everywhere and it was a wake-up call to corruption and evil all over the world - not in the USA singularly - but seems to be endemic worldwise. How very, very sad.

Every man must know his limitations!
One of the most interesting consequences of that underground corruption that devoured the combative spirit, the mission and the ethic of so many institutions, was the given answer for many filmmakers who bet and played hard with the great distance between the preventive action, the jailing process and the soft reaction of the high spheres that, in last instance imparted the last word: this long chain tended obviously to break in this last stage.
From movies of diverse latitudes, Investigation about a citizen under suspicion, A clockwise orange, Serpico, Death Wish, the problem was focused from two important angles: the cleaning of the corruption in the same level as Serpico, based in a real case, and the take of justice masked of personal revenge in the case of Death Wish.
Magnum Force somehow seems to ride between these two waters; the honesty and conviction of Harry Callahan and the absolute divorce of the reality of the high functionaries who only searched notoriety to reach highest positions; and in the other hand the raise of a secret repressive force based in its own codes: Immediate cleaning to avoid the impunity in major instances.
So Harry will face two opposite aspects of the same coin: eliminate one of them and trying to make the best he can in his job.
Maybe the only complaint you may have as I do, is the lack of a real punch answer; far beyond the anecdotic facts, going to the nucleus. This genre gave magnificent profits but just a few cult movies in this category and an immense of irrelevant sequels and related films.
To my mind this was the most relevant picture of the saga of Callahan; the rest of them were simply mirror reflects!
HARRY MEETS HUTCH
The se ond entry in the Dirty Harry series finds Clint Eastwood up against a vigilante force of cops out to rid the world of nasty criminals who have escaped the justice system. What is unique about this particular entry is the casting of several up and coming actors who would go on to their own starring roles in years to come: David Soul, Robert Urich and Tim Matheson for starters. They are some of the rookie motorcycle cops involved in the force. Hal Holbrook is an appropriately smarmy boss for Harry and Harry staple Albert Popwell is back as a particularly nasty pimp with a penchant for Drano. Even with all its implausibilities, MAGNUM FORCE is a worthy entry in the Harry series and should please fans of vigilante justice as well.
Whether or not you can sympathize with its fascistic/vigilante approach to law enforcement, Dirty Harry (directed by star Clint Eastwood's longtime friend and directorial mentor, Don Siegel) is one hell of a cop thriller. The movie makes evocative use of its San Francisco locations as cop Harry Callahan (Eastwood) tracks the elusive "Scorpio killer" who has been terrorizing the city by the Bay. As the psychopath's trail grows hotter, Harry becomes increasingly impatient and intolerant of the frustrating obstacles (departmental red tape, individuals' civil rights) that he feels are keeping him from doing his job. A characteristically taut and tense piece of filmmaking from Siegel (Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Shootist, Escape from Alcatraz), it also... Trapped by his image in 1976, Clint Eastwood resurrected his Dirty Harry character for a third go-round (out of a total of five) in this potboiler story in which the San Francisco detective takes on a group of revolutionary kids. Tyne Daly costars as a female cop who partners with the reluctant Harry Callahan, and she does very well by a role created merely to underscore and articulate the hero's various virtues. It's a dull package all around, but inside the wrapping are good performances by the two leads. --Tom KeoghMore Info about this DVD Actor(s): Clint Eastwood - Tyne Daly Director(s): James Fargo DVD Release Date: Released the 02 September 2003 Usually ships within 24 hours

The fourth Dirty Harry film is a complete embarrassment to memories of the stunning Don Siegel movie that started the franchise. Gratuitous and somehow sleazy, this cop flick finds Eastwood's Harry Callahan searching for a female serial killer (Sondra Locke) who happens to be a vengeful rape victim ridding the world of guys who can't take "no" for an answer. The whole silly Callahan myth--the way he'll just stand in the shadows with his big gun until the bad guys realize they're going to die--almost makes one wonder how Eastwood survived this junk to become an A-list director in his winter years. Fourth sequel to 1971's "Dirty Harry" has Harry tracking a psycho whose celebrity "death list" includes himself - and all the other celebrities listed with him are dropping dead. He now has a competent Chinese-American partner (Evan C. Kim) and the attentions of a pushy reporter (Patricia Clarkson) who wants his story - fame and publicity for her if he suddenly dies. That's probably why he won't give it to her. He's also dodging bullets from the henchmen of a mob boss he put away. Busy guy. More fun than "Sudden Impact", which was often unpleasant and didn't really feel like a "Dirty Harry" anyway. Check out Jim Carrey as a junkie rock star who mimes to Guns'n Roses. This is the only "Dirty Harry" movie where Albert Popwell doesn't appear; in each of the previous four films he plays a... Clint Eastwood is a down-and-out cop who is sent on a routine mission to pick up a witness and deliver her to the Phoenix courthouse. Sounds easy until he realizes he's been set up by the man who gave him this simple assignment. The interplay between Eastwood and the witness, a clever prostitute played by the actor's former girlfriend, Sondra Locke, is tough and playful. They obviously had strong chemistry. The story is highly implausible at times, but the action sequences are satisfying. Eastwood directs The Gauntlet very much in the style of his Academy Award-winning Western Unforgiven. Although the body count is surprisingly low for an Eastwood action film, a house, several cars, and a large bus get shot through with more holes than a big wheel of Swiss cheese....
