  • DVD Dirty Harry

Whether or not you can sympathize with its fascistic/vigilante approach to law enforcement, Dirty Harry (directed by star Clint Eastwood's longtime friend and directorial mentor, Don Siegel) is one hell of a cop thriller. The movie makes evocative use of its San Francisco locations as cop Harry Callahan (Eastwood) tracks the elusive "Scorpio killer" who has been terrorizing the city by the Bay. As the psychopath's trail grows hotter, Harry becomes increasingly impatient and intolerant of the frustrating obstacles (departmental red tape, individuals' civil rights) that he feels are keeping him from doing his job. A characteristically taut and tense piece of filmmaking from Siegel (Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Shootist, Escape from Alcatraz), it also remains a fascinating slice of American pop culture. It was a big hit (followed by four sequels) that obviously reflected--or exploited--the almost obsessive or paranoid fears and frustrations many Americans felt about crime in the streets. At a time when "law and order" was a familiar slogan for political candidates, Harry Callahan may have represented neither, but from his point of view his job was simple: stop criminals. To him that end justified any means he deemed necessary. The digital video disc preserves the film's anamorphic widescreen format. --Jim Emerson

    Review(s): DVD Dirty Harry
Inspector, you are one bad as*....

Great film about a man so hairy throughout his body that he cannot possibly get himself clean. He is one dirty filthy man, kind of like Adam Corolla. He finally runs away to the woods and mates with a bear, forever bringing us tiny bears in Zoos everywhere. Beware, some have guns and altered eyebrows, Scorpio is my idol.

"Did he fire six shots or only five?"

In 1971, a LIFE magazine cover read: "The world's favorite movie star is-- no kidding-- Clint Eastwood." Ever since Clint took as chance during the sixties to make low budget Westerns in Italy, his career had taken off from TV days and bit movie roles. The role of San Francisco Detective Harry Callahan had been offered to Henry Fonda, John Wayne and Frank Sinatra, all of whom turned it down. It's probably a good thing they did, because the moviue would have been forgotten as quickly as Sinatra's "The Detective" or Fonda's "Madigan," dismissed as tired vehicles for aging stars. "Dirty Harry" struck a chord with the public, mainly because people were sick of crime, urban decay and hearing about the civil rights of criminals. But I think a lot of it had to do with the persona that Eastwood created in this and subsequent movies. Harry Callahan is tired of the B.S. just like everyone else, but he's going to do something about it. He's had enough of criminals going free and doing the same thing over and over again just because gutless liberal politicians are afraid to take a stand. Eastwood created a new kind of cop hero who matched the cynical mood of the decade. There are too many great lines to recount here, but perhaps my favorite scene is outside the back where he points his .44 magnum at the bad guy and says he can't remember how many shots he fired. Movie critic Pauline Kael called this movie a fascist fantasy, and maybe she had a point. But for all that, this is a damn good movie, undoubtedly the best of the series.

    Dirty Harry

Tight, graphic and brutal, after "Dirty Harry", TV's "Dragnet" would seem forever quant. Director Don Siegel's gritty realism works to reincarnate the classic John Wayne hero image-a tough, independent, two-fisted good guy- to a funkier, more turbulent period. Eastwood's taciturn, squinty-eyed protagonist is the new rugged individualist, who, in a bureaucratic world, cuts through everything to get the job done. Kudos also go to Andrew Robinson who makes a particularly creepy psychopath.

    Magnum Force DVD

This first sequel to Dirty Harry was written by a couple of strong voices, writer-directors Michael Cimino (The Deer Hunter) and John Milius (Farewell to the King). But that doesn't mean the film is particularly good. After Don Siegel's ferociously dark style in the first movie, Ted Post's blocky, television-ish direction in Magnum Force is a huge letdown. The story doesn't win any prizes, either. Eastwood's San Francisco detective Harry Callahan (apparently having retrieved his badge after throwing it away at the end of Dirty Harry) takes on a vigilante squad within the city's police force. David Soul is pretty convincing as the major spokesman for these right-wing avengers. Eastwood, on the other hand, had already turned Callahan from fascinating... More Info about this DVD

    The Dead Pool DVD

Fourth sequel to 1971's "Dirty Harry" has Harry tracking a psycho whose celebrity "death list" includes himself - and all the other celebrities listed with him are dropping dead. He now has a competent Chinese-American partner (Evan C. Kim) and the attentions of a pushy reporter (Patricia Clarkson) who wants his story - fame and publicity for her if he suddenly dies. That's probably why he won't give it to her. He's also dodging bullets from the henchmen of a mob boss he put away. Busy guy. More fun than "Sudden Impact", which was often unpleasant and didn't really feel like a "Dirty Harry" anyway. Check out Jim Carrey as a junkie rock star who mimes to Guns'n Roses. This is the only "Dirty Harry" movie where Albert Popwell doesn't appear; in each of the previous four films he plays a... More Info about this DVD

    The Enforcer DVD

Trapped by his image in 1976, Clint Eastwood resurrected his Dirty Harry character for a third go-round (out of a total of five) in this potboiler story in which the San Francisco detective takes on a group of revolutionary kids. Tyne Daly costars as a female cop who partners with the reluctant Harry Callahan, and she does very well by a role created merely to underscore and articulate the hero's various virtues. It's a dull package all around, but inside the wrapping are good performances by the two leads. --Tom Keogh More Info about this DVD

    Sudden Impact DVD

The fourth Dirty Harry film is a complete embarrassment to memories of the stunning Don Siegel movie that started the franchise. Gratuitous and somehow sleazy, this cop flick finds Eastwood's Harry Callahan searching for a female serial killer (Sondra Locke) who happens to be a vengeful rape victim ridding the world of guys who can't take "no" for an answer. The whole silly Callahan myth--the way he'll just stand in the shadows with his big gun until the bad guys realize they're going to die--almost makes one wonder how Eastwood survived this junk to become an A-list director in his winter years. Best known for the line "Go ahead, make my day." --Tom Keogh More Info about this DVD

    The Gauntlet DVD

Clint Eastwood is a down-and-out cop who is sent on a routine mission to pick up a witness and deliver her to the Phoenix courthouse. Sounds easy until he realizes he's been set up by the man who gave him this simple assignment. The interplay between Eastwood and the witness, a clever prostitute played by the actor's former girlfriend, Sondra Locke, is tough and playful. They obviously had strong chemistry. The story is highly implausible at times, but the action sequences are satisfying. Eastwood directs The Gauntlet very much in the style of his Academy Award-winning Western Unforgiven. Although the body count is surprisingly low for an Eastwood action film, a house, several cars, and a large bus get shot through with more holes than a big wheel of Swiss cheese....
