  • DVD Newsies (Collector's Edition)

Except for feature-length animation, the musical has gone the way of the dinosaur. The Walt Disney company took a stab at reviving the live-action musical in 1992 with Newsies, a throwback picture with a curious subject. In 1899, the pint-sized newsboys delivering the New York papers go on strike against the unfair practices of news magnates Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst. The production is heavy on kiddie humor, although Christian Bale (the child star of Spielberg's Empire of the Sun) is charismatic as one of the older leaders of the revolt. The adult stars don't fare as well, with Robert Duvall doddering around as Pulitzer and Ann-Margret and Bill Pullman doing decorative duty. The film was not well received when first released, but hindsight reveals its charm (and allowed the young target audience to catch up with the picture on video). The first-time director is Kenny Ortega, the choreographer of Dirty Dancing, who brings plenty of energy to the action. --Robert Horton

    Review(s): DVD Newsies (Collector's Edition)
    It courages me.

It's a great movie. I wish I could have the passion like these young people have in this movie. We can learn a lot from them and make dreams come ture.

    An Awsome-Must See Movie

I thought that this movie was great. I watched it everyday in the summer when I was little. If I hadn't seen Newsies than I never would have known aout Christian Bale, if I hadn't known about him then I wouldn't have seen any of his other great movies like Batman Begins, or The Prestige. And I knew that these movies would be good because Newsies was good. It is about a Newsie strike that really happened, this movie tells us about events that actually happened but it is also entertaining and you want to keep watching it. This movie has romance, excitment, action, and dancing. Even though this is a musical it is still really good, the songs are catchy and the dances look great. Over all this movie is excellent and one of my favorites.

Where Have You Gone Christain Bale.. A Nation Turns Its Lonely Eyes To You

Christian Bale became such a big cult star after this film that he got the Green Jacket for over ten years.. not having to worry about his status.. then all of a sudden in 2004, BATBALE BEGINS!!!!....

This movie really is well done and, yes I'm a guy.... and I have an appreciation for well done films!!! It's pretty entertaining and great for families...

    Swing Kids DVD

This strange movie with a niche subject--jazz-loving, dance-loving German kids persecuted by Hitler's men--almost works, thanks to a good cast who seem devoted to the unusual story line. Director Thomas Carter doesn't bring the necessary stylistic oomph to the musical sequences, something that might have pushed the whole production to another, more interesting level of Hollywood dream. Kenneth Branagh makes a particularly effective, wolf-in-sheep's-clothing Nazi official. --Tom Keogh More Info about this DVD

    Little Women (Collector's Edition) DVD

The flaws are easily forgiven in this beautiful version of Louisa May Alcott's novel. A stirring look at life in New England during the Civil War, Little Women is a triumph for all involved. We follow one family as they split into the world, ending up with the most independent, the outspoken Jo (Winona Ryder). This time around, the dramatics and conclusions fall into place a little too well, instead of finding life's little accidents along the way. Everyone now looks a bit too cute and oh, so nice. As the matron, Marmee, Susan Sarandon kicks the film into a modern tone, creating a movie alive with a great feminine sprit. Kirsten Dunst (Interview with the Vampire) has another showy role. The young ensemble cast cannot be faulted, with Ryder beginning the movie in a... More Info about this DVD

    Empire of the Sun DVD

Roundly dismissed as one of Steven Spielberg's least successful efforts, this very underrated film poignantly follows the World War II adventures of young Jim (a brilliant Christian Bale), caught in the throes of the fall of China. What if you once had everything and lost it all in an afternoon? What if you were only 12? Bale's transformation, from pampered British ruling-class child to an imprisoned, desperate, nearly feral boy, is nothing short of stunning. Also stunning are exceptional sets, cinematography, and music (the last courtesy of John Williams) that enhance author J.G. Ballard's and screenwriter Tom Stoppard's depiction of another, less familiar casualty of war.

In a time when competitors were releasing "comedic," derivative coming-of-age films, Empire of the... More Info about this DVD

    All The Little Animals DVD

I have to say I was looking so foward to seeing this film. The concept is wonderful. It's too bad the last 15 minutes are about the worst ending I have ever seen. A pleasant story of two lost souls with a common love of animals and the natural world. Suddenly it turns into some gangster horror flick. Complete with car chases, kidnapping and blood. It's as if this ridiculous ending mocks the entire film. As someone who deeply identified with both Bobby and Mr. Summers it was an outrage that this story would take this sensational, unbelievable turn. More Info about this DVD
