Though this movie did decent box-office business, it was never as funny as it should have been or as clever as it thought it was. The film is set behind the scenes at The Sun Also Sets, a soap opera starring Sally Field that is suffering a ratings slump. To lure the audience back, the producers resurrect a dead character, played by Kevin Kline, with whom Field was once a lover of but is now at odds (and helped exile to dinner theater, where he is first glimpsed playing Willy Loman). Written by Andrew Bergman and Robert Harling, the script has its funny moments but never manages to string them together, despite a cast that includes Whoopi Goldberg, Robert Downey Jr., Cathy Moriarty, and Carrie Fisher. --Marshall Fine

    Hilarious Early 90's Film

Soapdish is one movie-long spoot of a soap opera in which the actors live as dramatic a personal life as the dramatic lives they play on screen. It is hilarious, well-written and enjoyable, despite the detractors' comments on the Amazon.com editorial. It stars Sally Field,Whoopi Goldberg, Robert Downey Jr., Cathy Moriarty, and Carrie Fisher. Sally Field plays an aging, award-winning daytime soap star who, at the start of the film, is facing possible replacement as ratings lower. There are of course plots to supplant her, especially by Cathy Moriarty's character, a producer on the show. Her lover, Robert Downey Jr. is a riot. Sally Field's character is that of a bitchy diva and she has genuine fun with the role. This movie may not have been too successful since it's only available on VHS and I don't hear people talking about it today but it is a highly entertaining comedy. In the 90's comedies were genuinely superior than comedies today. They benefited from great scripts, fine casting and greater music. Whoopi Goldberg's character for example is hilarious as Sally Field's hair stylist. Around this time she was doing "Ghost" in another hilarious role as the phony pyschic. The irony of the movie lies in the failed attempts to hinder Sally Field's character's success as an actress in soaps but instead, every aspect of her life becomes the material soaps are made of. Her ex lover (Kevin Kline) is a washed-out actor doing dinner theater and finds a job again in "The Sun Also Sets" (an insidejoke on The Sun Also Rises by Hemingway)He falls for a girl who turns out to be his own daughter with Sally Field's character! The plot twists and turns and has a satisfying ending. Also in the cast is Teri Hatcher, who is now known as Susan from Desperate Housewives and who also played Lois from Lois and Clark. She is doing a terrific job too though her hairdo and looks attest to the fact it was the late 80's early 90's period. A great movie over all.

Has funny moments but not enough this movie could of been why more funny

Good concept for a movie but bad outcome. The film is set behind the scenes at The Sun Also Sets, a soap opera starring Sally Field that is suffering a ratings slump. To gain back ratings the creators bring back a dead star played by Kevin Kline, with whom Field and him where lovers. Whoopi Goldberg, and Cathy Moriarty steal away all the scene's they are in. There are good moments but not enough. The movie was boring and was flat and had no life. Overall it was ok and had some funny parts but wont be good enough to make you liek the film.

    Classic Comedy

I love Sally Field, I love Whoopie Goldburg and the two were dynamic in this movie also Starring Robert Downey Jr, another underrated actor.

I'm not a soap opera fan, but I was partial to watching All My Children for a few years, so watching a movie that made jest of the daytime soap opera phenomenon was refreshing.

It's a wonderful light comedy, great to watch on any day!

    In & Out DVD

When a Hollywood heartthrob (Matt Dillon, playing a Brad Pitt look-alike) "outs" his small-town high-school drama teacher Howard Brackett (Kevin Kline) during the Oscar telecast, the entire (fictional) town of Greenleaf, Indiana, wonders if Howard's really gay. More to the point, Howard wonders, too--quite a dilemma considering his pending marriage to Emily (Joan Cusack), who's patiently tolerated a three-year engagement. While a TV reporter (Tom Selleck) covers the ensuing furor, screenwriter Paul Rudnick and director Frank Oz make good-natured humor their highest priority, turning the "crisis" of coming out into a laugh-out-loud spin on conventional romantic comedy. The result is a film that delivers constant laughs and a golden opportunity for its fine cast to show off their... More Info about this DVD

    Noises Off... DVD

Curtain's up, light goes down, everyone goes quiet, and... The director leaves the building. This is pretty much the happinings at any drama production. Rehearsals, dress rehearsals, tech rehearsals everytime it goes terribly down hill. Actors get on each other's nerves, and the little vains in the forehead of the director begin to show. This is such a comical screenplay greet on film or on the stage I captures everything. And any performer knows that a terrible upcoming of a play 99.9% of the time results with a perfect opening big opening production. This shows the down fall of every show and it gets worst each time.
A must see for everyone. A plus is that Christopher Revees and John Ritter are in this one too.

    Tootsie DVD

One of the touchstone movies of the 1980s, Tootsie stars Dustin Hoffman as an out-of-work actor who disguises himself as a dowdy, middle-aged woman to get a part on a hit soap opera. The scheme works, but while he/she keeps up the charade, Hoffman's character comes to see life through the eyes of the opposite sex. The script by Larry Gelbart (with Murray Schisgal) is a winner, and director Sydney Pollack brings taut proficiency to the comedy and sensitivity to the relationship nuances that emerge from Hoffman's drag act. Great supporting work from Teri Garr, Dabney Coleman, Charles Durning, Bill Murray, and pre-stardom Geena Davis. But the film finally belongs to Hoffman, who seems to connect with the character at a very deep and abiding level. --Tom Keogh More Info about this DVD

    The Birdcage DVD

The great improvisational comedy team of Mike Nichols and Elaine May reunited to (respectively) direct and write this update of the French comedy La Cage Aux Folles. Robin Williams stars as a gay Miami nightclub owner who is forced to play it straight and ask his drag-queen partner (Nathan Lane) to hide out when Williams's son invites his prospective--and highly conservative--in-laws and fiancée to a meet-and-greet dinner party. Gene Hackman and Dianne Wiest play the straight-laced senator and his wife, and Calista Flockhart (from television's Ally McBeal) plays their daughter in a culture-clash with outrageous consequences. May's witty screenplay incorporates some pointed observations about the political landscape of the 1990s and takes a sensitive approach to the... More Info about this DVD

    A Fish Called Wanda DVD

Kevin Kline took home an Oscar for his performance as a self-absorbed lothario who prepares for lovemaking by drinking in his own "manly" musk, but it would be hard to single him out as the best thing about the film. The fact is, the entire cast of this hilarious comedy is perfect: John Cleese as the conservative barrister defending a member of sexy Jamie Lee Curtis's gang, Ms. Curtis as the conniving crook out to grab the haul for herself, and Michael Palin as the stuttering, animal-loving hit man whose attempts to murder a little old lady only decrease the size of her poodle pack. Cleese cowrote the zingy script with British comedy veteran Charles Crichton (The Lavender Hill Mob), whose smooth direction balances Monty Python farce, hysterically tasteless gags, and an unexpectedly...
