  • DVD The Lone Ranger - The Original Series, Vol. 1

Grab your mask and six-guns, kids, 'cuz the Lone Ranger's back and better than ever! Once again, the retro-wizards at Rhino have expertly packaged this welcome trip down TV memory lane, serving up six complete 22-minute episodes of the popular shoot-'em-up series, starring Clayton Moore as the Lone Ranger and Jay Silverheels as his faithful sidekick, Tonto. The first two black-and-white episodes (from 1949) are included as bonus features, reminding us of the masked man's origins, and four consecutive color episodes from 1956 show the series at its peak of popularity. The colors have faded a bit (otherwise these shows look great), but the action's still as brisk as ever; this is kid-stuff produced with intelligence and skill, with well-cast villains (including Glenn Strange and General Hospital veteran John Beradino) and punchy stories that will still delight any baby boomers who look back fondly at TV's golden age. --Jeff Shannon

    Edited Episodes...No thanks Rhino

We'll Rhino In their lack of research or un-caring have released edited and/or time compressed versions of this classic series! Traditionally t.v. shows produced prior to the early 80's were made with more show and less commercials in mind. The Lone Ranger went to color It's last two seasons. These shows run 25 unhurried minutes when seen without commericials. Rhino was given edited and worse yet time compressed episodes as their dvd masters. Notice how everything seems rushed and un-natural. Movements are compromised by the digital manipulation of the originl 24 frames per second to the now 30 to 40 frames a second. Nick at Nite and T.V. Land both show edited/time compressed prints. When we buy ANY films or t.v. shows on dvd, we expect them to look fantastic and be UN-CUT and UN-TAMPERED with. These shows are neither. Worse yet, the great black and white origin of the Lone Ranger was originally a THREE PART adventure. Here Rhino provides us with two edited parts leaving the climactic episode off! I understand that Rhino has announced they are releasing 19 Lone Ranger episodes in a box set. Will these be un-cut? Will these be un-fair examples of our t.v. heritage that generations to come will be cheated by? Write your letters kiddies. Let Rhino and the rest know that you want to see these shows as your parents and grandparents saw them.

Out of the west comes the thundering hoof-beats...

Rhino includes four 20 minute color episodes of "The Lone Ranger," originally aired in September and October, 1956 and the two original 15 minute black and white episodes, "Enter the Lone Ranger," and "The Ranger Fights On," aired aired for the first time back before the Korean War in 1949.

Actually I never realized there were any color episodes of the TV series, since I was a sophomore in college when these four episodes were aired. The color and sound are excellent, adding to the enjoyment of these melodramas that represent the finest American values.

    The Lone Ranger 4-Pack DVD

This is a great little box set of dvds. The old Republic feature edited Hi-yo Silver is a quaint reminder of the old cliffhanger, but only serves to remind us that there has only been one true Lone Ranger, Clayton Moore. The Lost Episodes disc is worth the price of admition in itself, it's great to see the various comercials and promos together with the old savings bond film.

It was also fascinating to see De Forest Kelley making an early appearance (I never knew he ever looked that young!) as well as a guest slot from Don Heggarty, before he was "Struck by lightening".

Well recommended. More Info about this DVD

The Legend of the Lone Ranger (1952) DVD

This three-episode television classic was filmed in 1949 and introduced Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels as the Lone Ranger and Tonto. This seminal film details the masked man's origins as a Texas Ranger who was ambushed with five fellow rangers by outlaw Butch Cavendish, the Ranger's recovery with Tonto's help, why he conceals his identity with a mask, how he finds Silver, and their round-up and arrest of the Cavendish gang. Moore and Silverheels were perfect as the two leads in this series and portrayed the characters as no one else could have. They were supported by some of the old-school, venerable character actors of the day such as Glenn Strange, George Lewis, Tris Coffin, George Chesboro, and Walter Sande. The crisp black and white photography stands up well with time and the Lone... More Info about this DVD

    Lone Ranger-Boxed Set DVD

I am amazed that none of the early reviewers mentioned that the episodes are not the complete ones. The color transfers look great, but what a huge disappointment to discover that each episode runs only about 22 minutes, including the credits. Oh, yes, the opening segment is not the original one either. Rhino gets five stars for fantastic color and clarity, but it loses two stars for presenting incomplete episodes. More Info about this DVD

Lone Ranger & The Lost City of Gold DVD

Not only did Clayton Moore try to live up to his role as the Lone Ranger, so did I. Thank God I had role models like this when I was growing up. What a different country this would be if kids still tried to emulate the silver screen cowboys of yesteryear. As for the movie, it has everything. Rich color, beautiful scenery, some of the best fight scenes ever put on film, and a subtext about the evils of racism. Put aside your modern world cynicism and just enjoy this movie and every other film you can put your hands on about this great American hero. More Info about this DVD
