Review(s): DVD The Andy Griffith Show - The Best of Andy & Barney
The BEST SHOW EVER MADE!!!!!
I have been watching Andy Griffith since i was 3! I have seen every episode! If you havn't seen it yet, your missing out on something VERY GOOD!
AMS
It's OK, but other collection I've seen are better
The main thing I noticed about this set is that the image is DARK. I've got a few other Andy Griffith sets, and they all look better than this one. The sound is good, however, and in my opinion it's hard to call anything with Barney bad! It's inexplicable to me that they ditched the original theme music and replaced it with some lame synthesizer track. But I guess that doesn't ruin it entirely. I would recommend getting the complete 1st season from Paramount instead.
Also, I didn't realize when I ordered that this is the same as the Best of Barney and Best of Andy packaged together. Now I have duplicates of everything.
Here are the episodes:
Disc 1
* Class Reunion - Andy rekindles an old flame.
* Opie and the Spoiled Kid - Opie becomes friends with a rich kid.
* Aunt Bee's Medicine Man - Aunt Bee gets "tipsy" on Indian elixir.
* Andy's English Valet - Andy's personal servant is driving him nuts.
* Rafe Hollister Sings - Andy discovers Rafe's talent.
* Andy Discovers America - Opie puts Andy's history knowledge to the test.
* The Darlings are Coming - Charelene sets her country cap for Andy.
* Mountain Wedding - Ernest T. Bass plots to stop Charlene's wedding.
Disc 2
* High Noon in Mayberry - An ex-convict returns to settle the score with Andy.
* The Great Filling Station Robbery - Barney tries modern criminal detection methods.
* The Rivals - Barney attempts to teach Opie the ways of women.
* Dogs, Dogs, Dogs - A pack of stray dogs make the courthouse home.
* The Loaded Goat - A farmer's goat makes a menacing mean of dynamite.
* Barney's First Car - A little old lady sells Barney a lemon.
* A wife for Andy - Barney goes fishing for a wife for Andy.
* The Big House - Two big city convicts do time at "The Rock."
Andy and Barney at their funniest!
From the fall of 1960 when the Andy Griffith Show premiered to spring 1965 when Don Knotts left the series,Mayberry sheriff Andy Taylor(Griffith) and deputy Barney Fife(Knotts) were in constant partnership when at the police station in Mayberry. This package contains the first humorous police work on screen, big or small. Later there would be humorous police work on "Barney Miller" and the "Police Academy" movies. Giving Griffith and Knotts moral support are Ronny Howard as Andy's son Opie and the late Frances Bavier as Andy's aunt Bee. Howard later would star as Richie Cunningham on "Happy Days" and become one of Hollywood's best-loved movie directors. Griffith would star on "Matlock" and Knotts would join the "Three's Company" cast as landlord Ralph Furley.

Since its network debut in 1960, The Andy Griffith Show has been a viewer favorite thanks to its folksy, nostalgic charm and memorable cast, both of which shine in this set featuring the series' debut season. Originally spun off from an episode of Make Room for Daddy (both series shared producers Sheldon Leonard and Danny Thomas), The Andy Griffith Show centered around the lives of small-town sheriff Andy Taylor (the marvelously dry Griffith), his son Opie (Ron Howard), cousin and deputy Barney Fife (multiple Emmy winner Don Knotts), and the other gentle eccentrics of Mayberry (which was based on Griffith's real hometown). But while other "rural" programs poked fun at its characters (The Real McCoys, The Beverly Hillbillies), The Andy Griffith... This is a great find. it has five episodes, The loaded goat, the great filling station robbery, Andy Discovers America, Aunt Bee's Medicine Man, and The Darlings are coming. Five great episodes, a couple do not have the origional music, but show from begining to end. I know some of the others cut out the intro and outro, these are fully intact. Higly Recomended!! I saw that some of the reviews listed for the Brentwood Home Video release of these episodes on DVD are incorrect. This review is specifically for the 16 episode, 2 disc set made by Brentwood Home Video:
Sound and picture quality on these discs is very good. There are no major scratches on the film prints as seen on some other DVDs. Every episode is complete and uncut. The original theme music is used on every show and there are no company logos embedded on the image to distract you as on other discs. Basically, you get all 16 public domain episodes, uncut, with decent picture and sound quality in one 2-disc set. They are simply the best DVDs of these episodes currently available... This is a funny classic sitcom! I grew up watching reruns of classic TV shows when I was a child in the 70s but I don't really remember watching episodes of The Andy Griffith Show but I have seen a lot of reruns on TVLand and I liked them. This tape has a lot of good episodes, including some with The Darlings and Ernest T. Bass. The Andy Griffith Show is a pretty good classic sitcom and I wonder why the complete seasons aren't on DVD yet and with all of the best of DVD's on the market for The Andy Griffith Show I think they should put out ones with all of the episodes with The Darlings and Ernest T. Bass. I'm not sure I would want to own every Andy Griffith Show episode on DVD but I would definitely buy a DVD with every episode with the Darlings and Ernest T. Bass!
