DVD Highlander
This 1986 fantasy/action thriller has since spawned two sequels, a popular syndicated TV series, numerous comic-book spinoffs, and a loyal (if somewhat oddly obsessive) following of fans. Directed by music video veteran Russell Mulcahy (which explains the dizzying camera work), the original theatrical release made hash of an intriguing story about an "Immortal" from 16th-century Scotland (Christopher Lambert) who time-leaps to modern-day America with his archenemy (Clancy Brown) in hot pursuit. It becomes a battle to the death (yes, Immortals can die), and Lambert seeks survival training from an Immortal mentor played by Sean Connery. Dazzling, energetic, and altogether confusing in its original form, the film has since been released on video, laserdisc, and DVD in this revised widescreen "director's cut," with additional footage, director and producers' commentary, a photo and artwork archive, the original trailer, and an official time line of the film's evolution from script to screen. A must for Highlander fans ... and you know who you are! --Jeff Shannon
I was first told of this movie over 15 years ago. I was reluctant to watch because of the sword fighting (Not a big interest of mine) After watching it, it has become one of my favorites over the years and I make it a point to watch once or twice a year...it's that good! A superb performance by Clancy Brown brings an excitement to this picture. Of course, having Sean Connery in your film NEVER hurts! It has been fun to watch actors and actresses from this movie as they have progressed in their careers. I believe that you have to open your mind to this kind of film and take the time to finish it. It is full of surprises and ranchy humor. Watch for a scene when the Kargin and his hostage are driving through the streets of New York! Absolutely hillarious as the old famous song "New York" is played and sang by Queen! A true thumbs up for this motion picture! Creative and unique for its time!
There Can Be Only One...
As of 1986 the fantasy genre was really not producing much in the way of entertaining stories for adults, most were aimed at children or teenagers. Then, little-known director Russell Mulcahy delivered adult audiences what they had been missing, a fantastic tale of immortals locked in an eternal struggle, their goal, to win the coveted 'prize' and live the rest of their lives in peace.
"Highlander" is the fantasy/sci-fi tale of a Scotsman named Connor Macleod (Christopher Lambert) in modern-day New York. Connor seems to be an average man who makes an honest living selling antiques, however, all is not as it seems. Connor Macleod is really hundreds of years old, and when he was in his mid-twenties his clan fought in a battle against a warring clan in Scotland, and during the battle Macleod was fatally wounded and left for dead. Later, Connor awoke and was driven from his home by his own clan, who believed him to be demonic, and forced to wander the world not knowing how or why he is still alive. That is until he meets an Immortal named Ramirez (Sean Connery), who teaches him about the ways of the 'Immortals', which Macleod has become, and of the eternal struggle the Immortals are locked in as they strive to gain the 'prize'. Now, Connor must use all he has learned from Ramirez to defeat an Immortal who has been hunting him through the ages.
"Highlander" is a fun, well-written and well-acted movie, that gave audiences an interesting mix of the present-day, with flashbacks of the old highlands of Scotland, and the harsh life that was endured in that time. "Highlander" though not too well received by critics, it managed to find a cult following that has grown immensely over the years. Due to the popularity "Highlander" experienced among most audiences, it was no surprise that sequels were soon to follow. Although, to most fans the sequels were generally inferior to the original, in my opinion, "Highlander 2: The Quickening" was a decent sequel, but the best sequel is "Highlander 4: Endgame", a sequel that appears to ignore both "Highlander 2: The Quickening" and "Highlander 3: The Final Dimension". But regardless of the quality of the sequels, "Highlander" is a great movie, and is still as enjoyable today as it was in 1986.
"Highlander" is rated R for violence, language, and brief nudity/sexuality.
Great film.
Highlander is one of those films which is difficult to describe while doing it any justice.
The film is about Connor MacLeod (Christopher Lambert), a man born centuries ago in Scotland. After suffering a fatal injury, it is shown that he is, in fact, immortal. Guided by Ramirez (Sean Connery), a mysterious stranger, who also happens to be immortal, MacLeod is trained to defend himself against others of their kind. The lives of immortals are filled with violence and brutality, as they fight one another, taking their heads, in a struggle to reach the time of The Gathering, when the few who remain will battle to be the last one standing. Whoever wins will obtain "The Prize", a power which could endow the winner with the ability to rule the world, if he so chooses. As is shown in flashbacks throughout the film, the central nemesis of MacLeod in this movie is a purely evil brute known as The Kurgan (Clancy Brown).
This film, despite being a fairly self-contained story, has, since its release in 1986, spawned three sequels (with another apparently in the works, in addition to an upcoming anime film), an animated series, an excellent live-action tv series (starring Adrian Paul as Connor's relative, Duncan MacLeod), which itself was spun-off into the short-lived Highlander: The Raven.
This "Immortal Edition" DVD is a wonderful tribute to this wonderful film. Beyond that, though, it also pays its respects to the band who provided the music heard throughout the movie...the truly magnificent Queen. In addition to bonus materials on DVD, this edition of Highlander also includes a CD featuring three of the songs Queen provided for the film.
If you are looking for the definitive edition of Highlander (at least until the companies think they've come up with a new spin and put out another version), there can be only one. This is it.
Despite a typically haphazard plot, Highlander: Endgame is a marked improvement over previous sequels. This is the "torch-passing" chapter, in which the Immortal Connor MacLeod (Christopher Lambert) passes his life force to his heroic brother, Duncan (Adrian Paul, star of the 1993-96 Highlander TV series). These appealing stars make a fine onscreen duo, and Paul is a terrific choice to keep the franchise alive--strikingly handsome but possessing enough gravitas to make the prospect of future sequels unexpectedly promising. The movie is incoherent to the uninitiated, but established fans will be reasonably impressed by Endgame's cagey mix of romance, swordplay, and history-spanning action. While the movie's chaotic construction is regrettable, the frequent battles... Theatrically released in 1991 as Highlander II: The Quickening, this sequel was later reedited and gained a small but loyal following (prompting a spinoff TV series), but at the time of its release critic Roger Ebert called it "the most hilariously incomprehensible movie ... almost awesome in its badness." In other words, you might find some guilty pleasure in this chaotic sequel to 1986's Highlander, in which Christopher Lambert reprises his role as Connor MacLeod, a member of the alien race known as "Immortals," banished to Earth from his home planet Zeist some 500 years ago. In the year 1999, Lambert owns a corporation that has created a shield to protect the Earth following the depletion of the ozone layer. But the shield is seized by an evil cartel, and Virginia Madsen... One must assume that Christopher Lambert signed a contract forcing him to make this second sequel to the 1986 cult film Highlander. Unless he was paid an enormous amount of money, there is no explanation for his appearance in this abysmal movie. The original feature, which was graced with the presence of Sean Connery, was a critical yawn but attracted a cult following on the strength of its supernatural story line. An overproduced and muddled sequel followed, as well as a syndicated TV series and a video flick spliced together from the series. One would think audiences had had enough of this clansman who can die only if decapitated. This installment begins 400 years ago, when Lambert is in Japan perfecting his swordsmanship with the aid of another immortal, a...
