Review(s): DVD The Rifleman, Boxed Set 1
    The Rifleman is all man!

there are some good episodes and some slow ones in here.
'Waste I and II' from disk 4 are excellent. Did you see the beautiful girlfriend that Mexican dude had!
Also good is 'deadly image' and 'the Vaqueros' is an absolute classis desert revenge story. The encounters with the Mexican bandits are usually good. Rifleman is good, but sometimes I wonder if he had to wear jeans that tight! (just look at the picture on the cover)! but that's ok. Lucas is all man is this show. some of the most masculine honorable series made were made back in the 1950s! They could have improved the show with less of that cranky old sherrif dude. The interactions with the boy are nice and classic.
to go through most of the disks
    disk1
    'sharpshooter' a little slow
'home ranch' ok. some good bonding with the boy. ' I'm staying on my ranch!'
    'young gun' good. classic story.
'marshal' bad. I think the series would have been better with a different sherrif. that old sherrif dude kind of bugs me.

    'duel of honor' bad.

    disk2
    angry gun' good. tracking story.
    sheridan' bad
    money gun' bad
    mindreader' ok
    bloodlines' good story.

    disk3
hunter' good story! old timer who has been out in the hills too long messes with the rifleman! Big mistake, old timer!
    vaqueros' a favorite!
knight errant' bad bad bad. exactly how are they picking some of these episodes?

    Family fare with a bang

Chuck Connors, Johnny Crawford and the Chuck's rapid-fire long gun are the featured performers of these episodes. I watched this show five days a week when I was a grade-schooler and I'm delighted to find it holds up pretty well. Naturally some episodes are more worthwhile than others (in those days they knocked out thirty episodes or more per year), but overall quality is high for half-hour weekly fare. It's family entertainment that won't bore the not-so-young'uns.

Sam Peckinpah created this before moving on to feature films, and he utilized his youth on a California ranch to add realism to the show's atmosphere. Recommended viewing, especially the first couple seasons.

DVD's are defective. Can only view the first 2 episodes before it restarts back to the 1st show. The 2 episodes my wife saw she liked, but would like to see the remaining episodes. These dvd'd were a Christmas present and since she didn't get a chance to view them within 30 days of receipt, we're now stuck with a defective product.

I am happy to have a selection of "Rifleman" television episodes available for purchase, make no mistake about it. It is my personal favorite classic television western, and I am a very devoted to the series. I grew up watching it during my pre-school years, and have remained a fan ever since. But the current DVD offerings simply do not do justice to the legacy of that show.

What is needed is a COMPLETE, unedited season-by-season collection of "The Rifleman" series. And by complete, I mean the episodes MUST include the origial introductions (there were four variations that were used during the course of the series), original TV trailers, and perhaps commentary by Johnny Crawford, Patricia Blair, etc. The current DVD offerings simply are not true to the originality and... I found the quality of the DVD's was good but the content was not that great. I guess we have to look back to the success of the original show before deciding to add these programs to our collections. More Info about this DVD

    Rifleman Collection 4 DVD

Just like the review by "RLM", my wife too, is the one that often suggests we watch a episode of the Rifleman--and she's native to Puerto Rico, never saw the series before and generally doesn't care for the Western genre! That's the beauty of this series, though, in that in transcends the genre it's set in, offering up enduring stories involving redemption, hope, fortitude and resilience, focusion on a widower (Lucas McCain) and the son (Mark) he cherishes so much. Show me just one positive role model for young boys on a par with Lucas McCain in today's shows--there aren't any! I grew up with this series and now watch it for the great family entertainment it is with my wife and 4 year old boy--such a timeless show indeed.

While I'm happy that MPI has resurrected the series... More Info about this DVD

Have Gun Will Travel - The Complete First Season DVD

The first season of Have Gun--Will Travel makes it easy to see why this Western series was an overnight success. Making its debut on September 14, 1957, the half-hour show ranked no. 4 in the ratings for its entire first season, which ran almost completely uninterrupted (minus a one-week preemption) until June of 1958--a punishing schedule unheard of in present-day television. (It ranked even higher in subsequent seasons, holding the no. 3 spot, behind Gunsmoke and Wagon Train.) Richard Boone was perfectly cast in the lead role of Paladin, a cultured gunslinger whose West Point education, impeccable style, literate sophistication, and distinguished Civil War service made him unique among Western heroes, and the prototype for many dashing figures to follow. Based in... More Info about this DVD

Have Gun Will Travel - The Complete Second Season DVD

Episode for episode, the second season of Have Gun, Will Travel (1958-59) is even better than the first. With a bona fide hit on their hands, CBS didn't mess with success, and these 39 episodes pushed ratings even higher with sharp direction (mostly by first-season veteran Andrew V. McLaglen), a wide variety of attention-grabbing plots, and intelligent, sensible dialogue. All of the first season's strengths are carried over, and while 41-year-old star Richard Boone (as the refined gunslinger-for-hire Paladin) is rarely given a serious test of his talents, he commands his role with depth, humor, and impressive displays of physical agility. (By comparison, series regular Kam Tong had almost nothing to do this season; he's relegated to routine duty as Paladin's Chinese hotel valet... More Info about this DVD
