Rutger Hauer and Kim Cattrall star in this festival of stolen plots and embarrassing dialogue. Harley Stone (Hauer) is a tough cop. The kind of cop who lives by his own rules. The kind of cop who smokes, swears, and eats junk food. The kind of cop who slams people into walls to drive home a conversational point. If it sounds like you've seen this character before, you have. Split Second is not so much a movie as a cinematic crib sheet, cheerfully ripping off Jaws, Aliens, and Hauer's own Blade Runner, just to name a few. Which is not for a moment to suggest that the movie isn't fun to watch. Connoisseurs of horror-action also-rans will be in spasms of delight over everything from the ludicrous plot to the cookie-cutter dialogue ("They say he's the best." "He is.") to the incredibly misguided decision to have Stone eat chocolate truffles throughout the entire film. It is honestly sometimes hard to tell what is an intentional joke and what's just plain bad. Anyway, there's a serial killer rampaging through London in 2008 and Stone doesn't want a new partner, especially one with all that book learning and blah, blah, blah. This movie is energetic and hysterical. It's best watched with a couple dozen shots of espresso and about a pound of chocolate - the kind with the creamy centers - at about 2 am. It makes no real effort to be frightening, although there's a bit of gore. It's a classic. It is definitely not trying to be taken seriously, although the acting is excellent and some fo the special effects are really good. Others are ... well... the monster, realy. You'll see. Anyways, like any movie that isn't "Aliens" (although ... well, the monster, again)it has some flaws, but those are easily forgiveable since the overall movie is so darn cool.
I rented this a long time ago when a friend quoted from it, and was greatly amused. It's one I find not many people have seen, so I get to recommend it over and over to my friends. Some have not been as amused as I was, but quite a few have liked it tremendously.
The DVD quality is good, with only a few spots where the sound suddenly changes; but the music doesn't drown out the voices and overall it's quite good quality. There arn't any extras beyond a token cast & crew bit, but I'm just glad it's out at all.
Cinematic bliss, a touching reaffirmation of masculinity
It's not an easy time to be a real man. With the proliferation of shows like Sex and the City and Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, men who want to uphold the proper ideals of their gender often face criticism instead of praise. That's why movies like this are so important today. It's important to have a movie where guys respond like rational men. Where the proper response to a rat on your kitchen counter is to spray the entire room with automatic weapons fire, killing every living thing in sight. Where the proper response to being told that the serial killer who murdered your partner is in fact Satan, who has come to earth to eat people's hearts and take them back to Hell, is to say that Satan is in deep %@!*. And with all of the pop psychology about figuring out what women want, its good to have this movie remind us of what a real man wants - Bigger Guns!!! Rutger Hauer is perfect as Harley Stone, a slightly psychotic cop in a future world of ecological disaster, hunting a serial killer who may or may not be the lord of darkness, and looks suspiciously like a much cheaper version of the Alien. And hey, who knew Satan was a Scorpio? I'll have to remember to check his horoscope in the future! This movie is an absolute B-Movie treat, great for a beer and pizza night on the couch. It's surprisingly hard to find nowadays, especially the DVD which sells for high prices. You could never get me to part with mine for any money though! Five stars for this move!!
A movie to watch over and over and over....
Let's face it, the monster absorbing it's victims DNA is crap, and it is never clearly explained what the heck the monster is or where it came from. Who cares? The important thing here is that the movie serves up a few genuine chills and even more laughs. Every time I run into a problem, I realize that "we need bigger guns... Big big F)*&^)* guns... NOT big enough!". The interactions between the characters are what make this a true delight. Rent it, suspend your higher brain functions and enjoy.

I always enjoy watching a movie with Rutger Hauer in the cast. He is a good, sometimes great, actor who often appears in low-grade junk. Moviegoers know him from such stand out films as "Blade Runner" and "The Hitcher," but he is quite capable of turning in excellent performances in movies that, for all intensive purposes, reek. Some movie fans would probably castigate Hauer more than I would for making so many B films, and they would be right to some extent, but at least when this actor shows up in schlock you know you will see something interesting. If you have any doubt as to Hauer's acting skills, look no further than an obscure little film made a few years ago called "Fatherland." A prime candidate for cult status (it even spawned a sequel), this apocalyptic 1995 horror flick belongs in the darker corners of the comedy-horror sub-genre that includes Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Mimic, and Phantoms--and like those movies it's a mixed blessing with some highlights worth savoring.

Rutger's the MAN! I found this film at Best Buy about 4 or 5 months after September 11th, and it just hit the spot! I had never heard of the movie but being a Rutger fan I usually will spend the money to add his films to my ever growing collection. Sometimes he's the only thing that adds to the life of some very dreary films and he's in a bunch of them. The '80's however seems to have been his decade and this film is a pretty good outing for him.
It is in the B-Movie range, for sure, but it works well. Gene Simmons plays a great villain. The action and pacing of the film works well, and frankly the subject matter couldn't be more up-to-date.

This movie was very unpleasant for me to watch for about 80% of the time. Not enough Chris Walken! Isn't it supposed to be HIS movie? Well, that's what we're told, but instead we are forced to gag through scenes of terrible performances from very, VERY unintelligent characters, and laughable special effects. Take, for example, the fact that most death scenes involve someone falling on, or through, what afterwards appears to be a bloody stake. I can imagine someone bringing a box full of them to the set, or, more reasonably 20 of them. And most of the characters were SO annoying, I WANTED Gabriel to kill them. The only saving grace of this patchy, incoherent movie is of course Walken, who is indeed the king of creepiness (and gorgeousness I might add), and who's brilliant performance could...
